I apologize if my post came across as criticism of yours; that was not my intent. I was just emphasizing that point about how Italy is handling things, and which is an example of why I keep monitoring this thread despite the innumerable ad nauseam posts that provide nothing new and which make it somewhat difficult to follow the important stuff. Like maladat, I wanted to point out that your post wasn’t just Internet rumor.

Italy is the model against which the U.S. is being compared these days, and it’s important that we understand how valid that comparison may be.

As for my last comment about the young whippersnappers, that was merely a feeble attempt at a little sarcastic humor.

Maladat and Sigfreud, we're cool. I just thought I'd clean up an already long ambitious thread. There is so much here, probably why I forgot it had been posted. Not because I skipped it.

Haha, a haircut was my one "panic buy" last Saturday, if you can call it that - I tend to go about two months between them, and as usual had been procrastinating for about two weeks already.

First workweek under the as-yet inofficial state of emergency here. I'm part of the skeleton crew at our office since my commute is 15 minutes by bike, and standing in for our office manager who usually goes 90 minutes by public transport. The rest is slowly withdrawing into home office. Our publishing head came back from vacation in France last Saturday, just ahead of everybody locking up, and went home early on Tuesday with a headache. On Wednesday she called in sick, and yesterday our driver who had delivered an office chair to her house spread the story she had heavy cold symptoms, and her husband was going to call emergency. As it turned out, she just had another bout of migraine and they couldn't reach their GP, so quarantine measures were cancelled ...

Road traffic has noticably dropped. Public transport is reduced, and busses have the driver's area cordoned off and don't operate the forward door. Of my regular restaurants where I have lunch once a week in turn, only the burger shop remains open. Was sitting all alone there this noon, and the owner told me he was probably going to close next week if things don't change, too. The Italian outside our office where we usually order take-out has closed since Wednesday, when their outside tables were still packed in sunny weather. Shopping requires some planning; the supermarket across the street from me is no good in the evening except for drinks and fresh cuts. OTOH the one at East Station was almost universally well-stocked last I checked.

Historic references abound. In her first TV adress outside the traditional New Year's occasion ever, the chancellor called the situation the biggest challenge for Germany since WW II on Tuesday. Line of the week again by our driver, a former East German citizen like most of my current colleagues: "Borders closed, shelves empty, just like the old times". Our office manager came in for the day yesterday and said the supply situation was still better in her rural town; she suggested an airlift if we ran out of food in the city, which wouldn't be the first time for Berlin. She had brought cake for the rearguard, as did the guy from our printer who brought the proof for an upcoming brochure. It was enough for us to live on all day; given the current trouble to get bread, Marie Antoinette's "Let them eat cake" takes on a whole new meaning ...

Let's see how long my own company can keep operating under current conditions, since we live on advertizing and people are cancelling left and right; some are even trying to get out of contracts from three months ago. If I get bored I might respond to the call for reservists to volunteer, particularly from the medical service. All right, they're looking mostly for specialized care and emergency personnel, and I'm 47, somewhat overweight and hypertensive with chronic neck trouble myself, and nothing more to show than basic medical training 27 years ago and two first responder refresher cources from my last job; but hey.

As always the state of Bavaria had to show off its hardassery and was first to instate general restrictions on leaving your house today, followed by the Saarland which argued they are particularly endangered due to bordering a heavily-hit French region. There is a feeling other states may follow if people aren't seen to follow the chancellor's Tuesday appeal for responsible self-restriction, or just because they can't be seen to fail doing like the rest. Some cities have independently banned assemblies of more than two to five people in public already. I suspect Berlin would probably be last to do this, since Berliners are wont to defy orders just because.

Not taking the bait, Peter. We're not quite at the Firesude chats stage. I'm sure there's plenty of people hurting and I hope they are able to survive with the generosity of their communities. There are amazing stories already and I prefer to watch them.

Trump may talk to the People about their feels but during the daily update?. Get back to journalism. If the Britons can survive, so can Americans. Roll Eyes

I'm tired of the fucking lefties making a big deal about Trump calling this the Chinese flu, which it is. The Chinese, obviously, covered this up the best they could, and here we are. I'd go one further than the POTUS and call it the motherfucking Chinese flu.

Governor DeWine is at the fireside chat phase. Today he talked about Ohio's first fatality. It was an attorney from the Toledo area that he knew. Tragic. Just like everyone else's death today. Update me and back in your office. If you've got nothing to say then good for all of us.

Governor DeSantis of FL just ordered all restaurants to cease all on premises sales. Takeout and delivery only.

And Orange County (Orlando) just enacted an 11pm to 5am curfew.

Rumor has it that Pritzker is about to lock down Illinois during his press conference supposedly in about 20 minutes from now.

My wife works for a school district and can work remotely (has been all week) so we’re assuming her job will be ok.

My job? Don’t know...I work at a data center that has to be manned 24/7/365 but is located in Wisconsin. Part of the data center is tied directly to the federal reserve so I might be able to use that to label myself as an “essential” person. Might be stretching it but I’ve gotta try. Can’t afford to lose my job a month after starting it.

As mentioned, Cuomo shut down NY. I can live with a week or two off as I have a lot of work to do around the house and can get some reloading done but he said until further notice. How the hell long is until further notice? I have employees that need paychecks.

The people who are telling us to shutter and burn down our businesses and livelihoods don't face any consequences if they are wrong. They also won't be missing any paychecks even if they stay home.
Why are we letting them do this to us again?

I agree. This won't last.

Las Vegas announced over 200,000 workers affected by casino closures.

NC announced 40,000+ filed jobless claims in the last week.

etc, etc

This shit can't last.
