STOP THE INSANE OVERREACTION
The economic devastation that is now playing out before our eyes is not caused by the Wuhan flu virus. In the last 21 days, approximately 162,000 Americans have died. Of that number, 150 were killed by the Wuhan virus. If governments at all levels had done nothing, other than eliminating regulatory barriers to the deployment of already-existing medicines, would the virus have killed more Americans? Yes, that is what flu bugs do. Would it kill more than the 13,000 or so who have died from this year’s seasonal flu virus? Who knows? More than the estimated 80,000 who were killed by the flu in the U.S. just two years ago? I doubt it: world-wide, it has killed only a little more than one-tenth that number.

The answers to those questions are speculative, but this is not: by dictating a virtual cessation of economic activity, governments at all levels, but especially state and local, are causing an economic collapse the likes of which, if it continues, we have not seen since the Great Depression, if ever. When has such a government-caused disaster comparably devastated a non-socialist country? Not often. The inflation of the Weimar Republic comes to mind.

I agree with the Wall Street Journal editorial that Scott quoted from this morning, but I think it is too mild. Here is a prediction: the deaths of Americans caused by the Wuhan flu bug will be dwarfed by the suicides committed by people whose life’s savings have been wiped out, whose businesses have been bankrupted, whose jobs have been lost, and whose prospects have been blighted by the insane overreaction we now see from our governments. That overreaction must stop. Right now. Before it is too late, if it is not too late already.

This has been my thoughts. The longer this craziness goes on, the more suicide deaths you’re going to see.

One other aspect that isn't being talked about either are recovering drug addicts and alcoholics falling into relapse, especially since many of their meetings like AA are being canceled to avoid gatherings.

There will be an entire slew of unintended consequences that will likely cause more harm overall than the Chop Fluey itself.

Oh just wait until next week. That's when the fun will really begin as cases dramatically increase due to testing dramatically increasing.

I fully expect to be called up by the state next week for no reason other than to give the appearance that the governor is doing something. My wife already lost her job and this will cause an even bigger financial strain since I make less money and won't get any overtime from my civilian job when I'm activated.

I would think that the states will follow along, GA requires a copy of Fed return when you file.

This is great news as filing and paying on April 15th would probably wipe our savings out. I told the wife just yesterday that Uncle IRS would have to wait till this is over anyway

Contrast this with S. Korea, which implemented much milder restrictions and depended more upon cooperation from the population for control, and got it.

Unfortunately, Americans are more apt to behave like the Italians, in this respect, than the S. Koreans. Thus, given Italy's experience, the extreme mandated, government-enforced controls.

My wife and I are fairly confident we're fairly safe by restricting ourselves to necessary excursions only (*), and having upped our disinfection game. If everybody did that, or even the majority, probably a lot of what the state and federal governments are doing would be unnecessary.

(*) It wasn't "necessary" that I go to the range Wednesday. And, if this keeps ramping up, I won't go again until it tapers-off.

The media never misses an opportunity to exaggerate and sensationalize any problems. They are causing almost all of the problem and knee jerk over-reactions with their doomsday reporting. I have really come to hate and despise all media organizations for their lies and distortions of facts.
