There are different protocols and number of agents for sitting President and former President and candidates.

Having been on Presidential Security Details and Candidate Security Details as I was only once even close to the inner perimeter (securing and guarding a helicopter that was soon to transport Vice President), all other times on the outer perimeter. Uniformed cops and agents are never allowed to leave their assigned post.
