I’m starting to notice more and more people in my small WV town are not wearing masks. Went to WallyWorld this A.M. the greeter asked non wearers if they wanted a mask. Not a taker in the bunch. The greeter kept repeating,”please social distance.” I kept my mask in my back pocket & the six feet distance is no problem for me.

Also evident, folks (not even 50%) of the shoppers were observing the “shop this Way” signage. I went down the spice aisle the wrong way & had two ladies give me the stink eye.

I smiled and nicely said, “ I’m not going to shop the way the signs point. I’m going back to the old way. If it’s in the aisle I’m close to I’m going in, not an aisle out of my way.” They just looked at me as I wished them a good day. I started to think they remembered the old days.

Wow!

Such stupidity.

Look at all the empty seats in that football stadium.

What does the CDC say?
Wear mask when you cannot Social Distance.

There is plenty of space.
All had the free will to not sit next to the lady without a mask.

The Police that want to play Mask Nazi, will never have my support.
Now is not really the best time for Police to be playing silly mask games.

This story popped up in my Chrome news feed. It's from Annapolis, MD. TL/DR, people are freaking out at a hockey rink because parents weren't wearing masks and/or social distancing - outside, in the parking lot. Insane doesn't begin to describe it.

Piney Orchard Ice Arena management Wednesday reversed course on a rule implemented Sunday that barred parents from staying in the parking lot after dropping off their kids, the arena’s owner Murry Gunty said.

The arena will now permit parents to stay in the parking lot on weekdays. According to an email some parents received Tuesday night, a plan for weekends will be developed and masks are required at all times while parents are not sitting within their vehicles.

“We decided to try again and open the parking lot effective today,” Gunty wrote in a text. “We are also going to experiment with allowing some parents in the building to reduce congestion and gatherings in the parking lot. Will see if that makes the situation better for everyone.”

Parents of Anne Arundel hockey players had petitioned Piney Orchard to allow them to stay in the parking lot, citing player safety concerns.

Severna Park resident Ashley Byrne-Rice, whose son Jamison Rice, 7, is a goalie in the Junior Black Bears program, created the petition calling for the arena to reverse its new policy. As of Wednesday afternoon, the petition had more than 1,500 signatures since Sunday.

Byrne-Rice was surprised by the strong response from fellow parents.

By not being permitted to stay in the parking lot, Byrne-Rice noted there weren’t many options to remain close by while her child skates, which she finds concerning should something happen to her son. She recalled the recent tragic death of 13-year-old Henry Lent, a Carroll County resident who suffered a fatal brain injury during a hockey clinic in southern Maryland last month.

If something happened to her son, Byrne-Rice said, “They’d have to run out, call us, try to get us down there, make sure we’re local so we can get down there. It’s definitely a player safety issue.”

Gunty said the initial decision to ban staying in the parking lot was made after the Anne Arundel Department of Health received multiple complaints regarding parents congregating in the parking lot while their kids were inside.

According to Gunty, officials from the health department frequented Piney Orchard’s facilities as often as five days a week. Health department spokesperson Elin Jones in a text message said the department did not go out daily but they received complaints “concerning crowding in the parking lot [not social distancing and not wearing masks].”

“Imagine if you had to get five physicals a week. You’d be pretty gun shy about going to the doctor," Gunty said of health department inspections. “We wouldn’t have any [spectators] in the building, kids get dressed in the parking lot, you have to wear a mask. … and we were still getting complaints.”

On Wednesday, Jones said the decision to reopen the lot was up to management, but that mask-wearing and physical distancing must be in compliance with county health guidelines.

Emily St. Louis, whose son Brayden has played hockey for four years and competes at Piney Orchard, said she’s still nervous over what rules might be made for the weekends. A Wednesday meeting between Junior Black Bears parents and players and rink management has been canceled, according to Tuesday night’s email.

“There has been no official notice from the rink/owner so we feel like once all of this dies down it will be pulled right back from underneath us,” St. Louis wrote in a text message. “The meeting being canceled was confusing and there is no trust there at all.”

Byrne-Rice shared similar concerns.

“There were more questions we wanted answered than just the parking lot. I would also want the owner to send us a official statement from rink management about the parking lot,” she wrote in a text. “Murry also should be recognizing that he needs to do better [for] the parents that spend thousands of dollars at his ice rink and take ownership that what he did was wrong and not safe for these kids.”

St. Louis said she witnessed small groups of parents talking next to their cars and other parents sitting under tents, half of them wearing masks, but nothing she thought violated social-distancing regulations. She said she would never leave the car except to meet her son at the door for pickup.

Gunty said parents' gatherings amounted to more than just a small handful here and there.

“Honestly, it looked like a Ravens tailgate in our parking lot. People were coming up with RVs," Gunty said. “We couldn’t get them to stop. Sure enough, the health department gave us a hard time about that. I’m just trying not to get shut down. We had to close the parking lot.”

Though some parents who spoke with The Capital said they hadn’t seen any security guards attempt to break gatherings up, Gunty said this weekend he sent a security guard to ask parents to disperse, to which he was met with anger and profanity from parents. Before he brought in security, Gunty said he’d personally have to break up crowds himself “all day long.”

“The alternative is that I’m going to have to call the police and have people arrested. We had a security guard and they were literally telling him to go ‘F off,’” Gunty said. “They will not disperse, they will not socially distance, they will not wear masks. If you were in our parking lot this weekend, you would be uncomfortable from a health perspective. We [were] trying to obey rules.”

You better believe it! For a mask! And were those her kids that were sitting there with them? Disgusting! After I was done suing them for everything they're worth, my kids would sue them.

That's the problem. You don't get a dime from them. Their worth is not subject to risk.

What you will get is tax payer dollars, and that's where I have a problem. Personal assets should be depleted first, then tax dollars, then the difference should be owed for eternity until repaid by the actual persons causing the loss.

As a taxpayer, not even at that game, why should I be on the hook for a single penny? All of those involved should be the first to loose it all. They made the rules. They had the rules enforced. Let them pay.

I'm a bit disgusted no men in those bleachers stepped up and simply told the black security guy (not a cop I believe) to back off and take a breath. I've had opposing parents of a youth baseball team we were playing lobbing four letter words and even trash over the fence at a game, and it was all I could do to get security to settle them down or eject them. There is 'no' excuse whatsoever for what that security guy did. And how about the POS bald guy that showed up who apparently works at the school who did absolutely nothing? I'd have his job too when all was said and done. This shit need to stop, and right now.

On the bright side, I really like the attitude the organizers of the Iditarod are taking. Born out of necessity of a pandemic it will persevere this one. Now if only the ceremonial start can survive the mayor of Anchorage and his fun police...

The Iditarod enlists infectious disease epidemiologist to advise on 2021 race planning
Posted by IditarodTeam in Iditarod

For its 49th running in March 2021, the Iditarod is developing a multi-tier COVID-19 mitigation plan to account for various permutations of the pandemic. The plan outlines specific safety protocols for different scenarios, contingency drills and rapid responsiveness with the goal of zero community transmission.

The plan addresses every facet – from the race rookie meeting to food drops to protocols on the trail and beyond – to ensure all race related activities can adapt to any COVID-19 dynamic while preserving goodwill, enhancing social consciousness, and ensuring stringent risk mitigation protocols. Much like the 1925 serum run to Nome, the Iditarod has shown that it too can persevere through a pandemic. As one of the only professional sporting events that continued during the COVID-19 outbreak in March 2020, health officials noted that the race was “the ultimate form of social distancing.”

“We can’t over plan, and we have already begun embedding hyper adaptivity into our operations to ensure that flexible and nimble best practices are ‘at the ready,’” said Iditarod CEO Rob Urbach. “These challenges and the Iditarod are synonymous.”

Building off its safely executed 2020 race that ran during the height of the global outbreak of COVID-19, and working closely with state health officials, the Municipality of Anchorage, mushers, village leaders, Nome city officials and veterinarians, the Iditarod has also engaged an infectious disease epidemiologist with Emory University to advise on its race planning for 2021. Dr. Jodie Guest, who is also a longtime Iditarod race volunteer, will be advising the Iditarod regarding risk mitigation best practices, surveillance and contingency planning for the entire 1,000+-mile trail for the 2021 race.

“For me, the Iditarod is a family event. I’ve volunteered on the race’s logistics team since 2010 in Unalakleet, McGrath and Galena. My dad has been a race veterinarian for 12 years and my son volunteered for the first time this past year,” Dr. Guest said. “Being able to provide epidemiology expertise to a sport I love is an exciting opportunity as we ensure this race will continue safely in 2021 and beyond.”

Since March, Dr. Guest has been leading Emory’s outbreak response team for COVID-19.

“We are grateful to have Dr. Guest as part of the Iditarod team as she is pressure testing everything we do to ensure that we are meeting the safety standards of COVID-19 advised by national and state organizations,” Urbach added. “Moreover, the Iditarod is uniquely positioned to reinforce positive behavioral health choices with a culturally relevant voice.”

The Iditarod will provide further announcements in the coming months as it plans for a safe and successful 2021 race.
