In Alaska, the governor's not the problem, it's the mayor of Anchorage. We've got a state plan for reopening in effect that actually makes sense. But throughout this whole shit show the mayor of Anchorage has had a policy of, "Hey look at me! I'm doing something!"

What he's done has been totally uncoordinated with anyone else in the state and not amounted to anything more than becoming a pain in everyone's ass. Like at the beginning, the state leased an entire hotel downtown for the, "Unsheltered Citizens" of Anchorage to stay while they waited for test results. He just had no means to feed them while they were there and then wondered why they did not stay quarantined. While the state deemed firearms an essential business, the mayor demanded that Cabala's, Bass Pro and Sportsman's Warehouse be closed. While outdoor recreation and parks have never been shut down by the state, the mayor's office refuses to remove the lock from the gate at the archery range at Kincaid Park.

The latest is while dine-in restaurants can open in the state under phase 1 with some restrictions, the mayor put additional restrictions on them. He increased the social distancing (God, how I have come to hate that word) from 6' to 10', required that all seating must've reservations in advance, only immediate family members can sit at the same table, changed the maximum allowed from 25% capacity to 20 people or 25% capacity whichever is less, and all restaurants for 30 days must keep a list of patrons names and phone numbers. The end result is that most restraints are saying the added expenses imposed by the mayor make it financially impossible to reopen.

It is just ridiculous.

Same here. The State opens on Monday, 5/4.
But St. Louis County remains locked-down indefinitely at the whim of Sam Page.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

You know, earlier this year I was asked by a friend, who is not very political, if I thought Trump would win re-election. I told him the only way, the ONLY way, he didn't is if the economy sank. Everyone knows an incumbent with a great economy is guaranteed victory.

The timing of all this, the complicit nature of the media, the Facebook/You Tube censorship...it really makes you wonder. The confluence of megapowers is unprecedented in our history.

Nearly every antibody study conducted so far, which have been suspiciously low in number, seems to show this virus has already spread like wildfire, but only a small percentage ever show symptoms, and an even smaller percentage actually get very sick and die. The early numbers show a very, very good chance that most of these lockdown areas have already had a massive spread of the virus. It seems like virtually no one is interested in even considering that possibility.

If the so-called journalists walked in from outside soaking wet and said it was raining, I would go outside myself to make sure. That's how little I trust the media.

If they hate this country so much, why don't they leave to wherever their paradise is?

Its Saturday. And the evil queen has ground out another round of Executive Orders mandating mask use in the grocery stores.
And everyone is powerless to stop her.
If anything comes of all this BS, it has to be in the form of a system of checks and balances that rein in the ability of governors to rule by Executive Orders.
Is this all an effort to derail Trumps re-election ? It seems to be. But I dont think the left can keep it a secret or even work together enough to make it happen.
And the only way it can happen is if the population supports it. Are there enough useful idiots to bring such an outcome about? Time will tell.

What does that mean exactly? What happens to the man that carries on the streets of Jackson today? Is he allowed, or is he arrested or cited and has to prove his case on court later? Serious question.

What in the world is going on in New Mexico?

Link

quote:
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham invoked the state's Riot Control Act on Friday to essentially lock down the city of Gallup after its mayor requested that she do so on Thursday. Under the act, all roads leading into Gallup are now closed off "to mitigate the uninhibited spread of COVID-19 in that city."

He didn't really get any part of his ass handed to him. He just said "oops, I'll suspend that stupid order while I extend stay at home another couple weeks."

Link

quote:
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba is extending the city’s stay-at-home order.

The new order goes through Friday, May 15.

Lumumba added these changes to the new order:

Non-essential retail stores, malls, grooming businesses must stay closed, but can do drive-thru, curbside pickup and delivery services
Employees must wear a face mask and follow social distancing rules
Hand sanitizer must be on-site at any business and employees must frequently wash hands
Lumumba said the move was done with the advice of health experts.

The order is on top of the governor’s shelter-in-place order. Lumumba says Reeves’ order is a minimum action and mayors have the ability to put more restrictions in place.

Lumumba also made a statement about his suspension of open carry. He brought Mothers Demand Action out and said they support his executive order.

The mayor’s executive order has since expired in accordance with the civil emergency that was in place.

Lumumba says since January 1, 2019, Jackson Police have responded to 94 calls of convicted felons in possession of a gun.

“This senseless gun violence has plagued our city for far too long,” he said.

He says the city must admit they are not doing enough to curb gun violence.

“The residents of Jackson and the police department are fighting a battle with their hands tied behind their backs,” he said.

Lumumba said he has no objection to the second amendment but has a problem with illegal gun owners and said open carry law makes it harder to enforce that.

“Even if no one is standing with me, I will continue to fight for the lives of all Jackson residents.”

Idiot.

I've been out in Jackson a lot in last couple weeks. Nobody here really seems to give a shit what he or any other mayor says, including Madison Mayor Mary who threatened to turn off a barbershop's power.

I am not a big fan of the little tyrant New Mexico Governor but in this case I agree with her. I think she is a little late in shutting down Gallup but she should also shut down the entire New Mexico side of the Navajo Reservation. The governor of Arizona should shut down their side. The virus is running rampant on the reservation. The Navajo nation has large chunks with no running water, no sanitation infrastructure, crowded living conditions and horrid personal hygiene. They come in to Gallup for supplies and congregate. Even before Covid, I was always hesitant to stop in Gallup. At most restaurants you need to get a key to use the restrooms cause they get trashed out. The reservation is large and some ‘bands’ are located away from the main reservation. It’s a big problem.

The state governors/mayors are still flexing their newly found muscle. Protests don't seem to effect them. They'll continue pushing outlandish restrictions until smacked by the USAG or a high court ruling. They'll get away with it for now because the media supports their agenda.

The President will get blamed for a lot of it while we all know who is to blame. I have confidence if he can hold a few rallies before the election, he can use this to his benefit.

We went to visit my mother at the assisted living facility, through the window of her room, today. She'll be 89 in July. She's been stuck in her room since February end/ beginning March. We went the Saturday before Easter, before. She was in her bed and couldn't hear or see us. She looked more faded than before at that time, but she was much worse, today.

She was in her wheelchair and looked like she was crumbling into it. She didn't recognize us. She thought my wife's name was Laura. She thought mine was John. She had no idea why she was stuck in her room. The nurse said she was not eating much and that many of the others were also because of being trapped in their rooms for months on end.

At this rate, I don't think she has much time left.

That's so sad to hear. My former partner is 86 years old with a heart condition and onset of dementia. His wife died suddenly a few months ago and he's deteriorated quickly since. So much so that his estranged daughter has stepped in with her power of attorney and removed him from his home.

He's now in a nursing home and confused. So many of his friends want to visit him but we're not allowed. He's a former tough ol' Marine. I love him like the brother I never had.

Thank you, sir.

I am very sorry about your partner.

Not being able to be near has to be very hard for you and his other friends.

Several times she motioned for us to come closer and also to hold her hand, but she couldn't comprehend that we were not allowed to do so.

A man donated tablets to a nursing home so the residents could communicate. Instruction was provided. The police department distributed them to all the residents. I believe this took place in Florida.

That was very kind.

My mother is now in no condition to attempt to do something like that, but many of the other residents could benefit.

I just learned a few minutes ago that a friend of mine has passed away from the virus.

She was a member of my wife's class in school and was 78 years old. For the past ten years or so, I've attended a "coffee klatch" at a friends house on Wed and Thur mornings, nine till noon. This gal was not regular but did show up periodically. I didn't realize she was sick until just a few days ago. She was living in a nursing home.
