Yeah, if they don't win they will be executed. You can't go half-way in on a coup d'é·tat.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

This may actually be happening and it might be an attempted coup. Although;

One would think the Russian government would have the ability to stop all internet traffic, and communications until the situation was resolved.

So why haven't they?

Not that long ago videos were coming out of China showing people being welded in their apartments because a new deadly virus was spreading around the world. The Chinese government allowed that information out and the world became panic stricken. I look back and think all that information was allowed to leave China to instill fear.

As everyone should know by now, any initial reports about an active conflict can be wildly inaccurate, or even complete lies.

This twitter account has some good information as well as some good responses.

If it is true, I wonder how Ukraine will take advantage of the chaos.

Moscow's mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, said in a message posted to Telegram that a “counter-terrorist operation” is underway in the city and that city services are on “high alert," according to a translation.

He called for residents to "refrain from traveling around the city as much as possible" and said traffic could be blocked in certain areas.

He added that he has declared Monday a non-working day except for key services and the military.

I wouldn't pretend to be able to predict the outcome of all this, assuming that it's even actually occurring, but I can tell you that the idea of Putin being out of power is a truly pleasant thought, and even more pleasant is the idea of him hanging upside down in Red Square a la Mussolini.

It is. I've an acquaintance in Moscow. He just gave me the skinny. Or at least as much of it as of which he's aware.

Right now I'm just watching the show munching popcorn, like everyone else. What I can say from looking at the Russian blogosphere is that they're treating this as a bona fide power struggle, not some kind of political theater or CIA MI6 NWO UFO-sponsored coup attempt; though they're not sure where it's going either. Meanwhile outlets usually spreading the official Russian "Russia good, Ukraine Nazis, war NATO's fault" narratives seem in dire need of instructions.

I’d settle for a Nicholae Ceaucescu, pulled out of an APC he was trying to flee in, lined up and shot by his own men.

No coup is ever successful without the support of the military.

I would think Prigozhin is not so stupid as to start this without knowing the Russian military will not put up much resistance. OR he may be banking on the fact that the rank and file and junior officers will refuse to fight even if the higher ups order them to.

Russia has plenty of aircraft and tactical nukes. A ground convoy would not survive full attack from air. Of course there would be a lot of collateral damage and for what - to keep Putin in power longer?

Just have to see how this plays out. Hopefully the Russian military is tired of Putin and ready for change. But then the new guy might be worse...

Well latest news is that Belarussian president Alexander Lukashenko negotiated with Prigozhin over the day on Putin's behalf, and they reached an agreement to avoid bloodshed, including security guarantees for the Wagner troops. Prigozhin has reportedly confirmed he's stopped the advance and they're returning to their bases.

Somewhat anti-climactic after all the excitement, but it will be interesting to see further details of that agreement. And obviously, this episode will have profound effects on the war in Ukraine and beyond for Russia.

I can't take credit for the quote, but out in the twitter world a comment was made poking fun at all of the neocons who were getting excited at the possibility of regime change.

"The biggest loss in all of this mess is Lindsay Graham's erection."

With all of the information/disinformation out there, I wish I could comprehend the end goal here - at a local level, a regional level, and a world wide level. Whole thing was sounding like a Tom Clancy novel.
