I learned to drive manual on a Kubota 18hp Tractor but the first car/vehicle I drove with a manual was a 1978 Ford Courier pickup. I learned around 1987 on the tractor and drove the pickup for the first time around 1990.

86ish Mazda B2000 long bed.

It was trucks more than cars. I have never had a stick shift vehicle. I did drive an Army Jeep for a year.

Ford 6N, followed by a Ford 650, I think it was.

On road, there were several at once around me, but primarily a 1959 Ford F100, 3 on the tree and a 292 Y block.

And now I have 3. 1966 Mustang, 1996 Ranger, 2024 Bronco. Strangely enough, I’m not a one brand guy, but all my stick shifts have worked out that way.

....49 Ford 4 dr Sedan....WITH the famed flathead V8. We had an acre of rural ground, with the house & 1 driveway at one edge, and access drive on the opposite edge. I learned a lot about clutch/backing up/CLEARANCE/etc nuances during that period.

Then a 53 Plymouth 2 door flat 6 with overdrive....(sigh).....

That adds non-synchromesh into the mix. You have to manually match the gear speeds or they will clash and grind, especially when downshifting. This can be done pretty quickly with practice, however.

My brother has owned a 1929 pickup for >50 years and in the last few years did some "souping up" to the engine. I have never driven it myself, so no experience with non-synchro transmissions. The Model A was the first Ford car with conventionally placed and operated shifter and pedals.
