I can't speak to other e-locks, but, my S&G came with preset master (and supervisor, IIRC?) codes.

The default master code was 123456. It's the same for all out-of-the-box S&G locks in the series mine is.

Obviously: You want to change that pretty much right out of the gate.

Maybe we're talking about different things. When I talk about a "master code" I'm talking about a code that gives one "administrative" access to the lock's functionality. (Same as with my alarm system.) You can change nearly anything with the master code.

I think you're talking about a mythical "master code" the factory maintains for all their e-locks.

Again I ask the question: Just how useful would be an e-lock that had such a "master code?" Would you buy such a lock? I certainly would not.

Nor, I imagine, would anybody else that wanted an e-lock that was truly secure.

How long do you suppose it would be, were such a code or codes to exist, before somebody bribed or extorted somebody and that code or those codes got out of the lock manufacturer's control?

This is the argument against giving governments back-door keys to all encryption systems. (Which even some in the U.S. government are arguing for.) Eventually those keys would escape into the wild and every last bit of secure encryption would instantly become as insecure as if it didn't exist. Worse: There'd be the expectation by the unwary it was secure, when it wasn't.

Liberty Safe is in the business of selling a product which secures the customer's stuff. That is, a customer chooses their product because they believe it makes it very difficult to access their stuff.

By handing the government easy access, Liberty has fully negated the reason for buying their product.

I will never buy one of their safes.

Why on Earth would Liberty Safe give out a customer's safe access code to the fed.gov without a subpoena or warrant from a court specifically naming Liberty and commanding them to give over the code?

They did it based on a faxed copy of a warrant that did not name them as respondent?

I'm hoping for all Liberty safe owners to file a class action lawsuit against them.

Everybody knows corruption at the fbi is limited to just a small handful of high profile people at the top, and that the rank and file field agents are fine, upstanding public servants of great integrity, who relentlessly uphold the letter and spirit of the oath, constitution, country and rights of the average citizen.

So does this mean the feds now have the master access code to all Liberty safes? Or is each master code unique?

Guess I need to start safe shopping. I want a full refund for my 10 year old Liberty safe.

Without that [/sarcasm], a lot of folks might give you grief.

Probably, and I suspect some feel stuck by circumstance and fear of not providing for their family but otherwise want out.

Best to man up and get out now. Little to be gained by delaying.

Perhaps, but that has nothing to do with the problem here, a gun safe company volunteering safe access codes to the FBI without a direct order from a court.

I know. Just a PSA for anyone who wants to keep confidential stuff confidential and may be overly confident in their safe.

As posted by oddball earlier, the real event that should have everyone's blood boiling is the fact that the gov sent in their tactical brownshirt goons (5-6 car loads of them) to make the bullshit jan 6 thing into something way bigger than it ever was.

I suddenly have this inexplicable desire to buy gold and silver coins, and store them in my Liberty safe under my mattress ...

I've read your post several times and I just don't get it . Let me rephrase my comment/question . When I bought my Cannon safe , it was set for a default factory code of 123456 # . This was the default code for all Cannon safes at that time . The manual gives you directions on how to change that code to whatever you want it to be . So , is there ANOTHER code known only to the manufacturer ? It appears there is and this is what Liberty provided to LE .
