JlJones - If you have the opportunity can you ask if they have a hard release date identified yet? Looking forward to your range report as I really think I want to be an early user of this model.

Yes, please let us know your thoughts if you get to play with one. I'm pretty happy with my P320s and am not really thinking that I need this, but like all new products I'm curious to see how it compares. ----------------------------------------------------------- Any comments made by this poster are my own and do not reflect the views or opinions of my employer.

This is where I am as well. I'd had a RXM on my next handgun list, but if these look promising, may stay with Sig. The Enemy's gate is down.

Well…… I feel like if you have shot a 365 in the larger varieties, you have shot a 385. The grip reminded me of an M&P 2.0. But in my opinion it still would need a coat of silicone carbide for my needs. I shot the standard (G17 sized version) and the slide mounted comp’d version. Both the sights returned nicely. Lower bore axis seems to make a little difference Very little recoil on the comp. Big thing I don’t guess I realized was the move away from the “modular” bath tub design back to a traditional duty style pistol. If you are a fan of the 365, you’re going to love the 385. Probably not one in my future because I am pretty committed to shooting a Glock. ________________ People hate you. Train like it.

^^^I thought the P385 had a removable FCU as well?

Mr. Jones - Thanks for taking the time to provide your review. I shoot my P365 variant pistols better than I do my P226 pistols. Being older with small hands I can grip the P365 various grip modules on my pistols better than the E2 grips I have many on my P series pistols. The E2 grip module for me is closest in size to the P365 grips, at least it seems that way for me. Thanks again - My plan is to either buy a full size P385 or the Mach3D (if I can afford it).

Think they said it might be next year before the 3D comes out. ________________ People hate you. Train like it.

It does have a removable FCU. Diligentia, Vis, Celeritas "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." -- George Orwell

^^^Thanks. This is why I was confused.

Yeah, I'm confused as to what jljones meant by that as well, because it's still a modular FCU-based firearm whose slide and grip module can be swapped around to different sizes and configurations. In fact, it's even more modular than the P320/P365, because their new "Magstrap" system also allows you to swap out the bottom half of the grip to add/remove a magwell or go back and forth between a more compact 15 round grip length and a longer 17/21 round grip length, all without changing the entire grip module. (Though to go with a longer rail/dust cover would still require changing the grip module.) Hopefully he'll clarify his intended meaning.

It's a feature I'm happy they kept. So far, I have yet to see a real downside to having the removable chassis. Diligentia, Vis, Celeritas "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." -- George Orwell

^^^I wonder if higher cost is one, but I’m not sure why it would be. Otherwise, I can’t think of a reason either.

According to the SIG rep, you can add back straps of sort, but it isn’t a grip module set up like the SIG 365 or 320. ________________ People hate you. Train like it.

That's an odd thing for your Sig rep to say, considering it's specifically marketed on Sig's website as having "an all-new modular Fire Control Unit" with "modular polymer grip module". The FCU is removable/swappable, just like the P365, only beefed up: And the models they've announced so far have two different grip modules, one primary one for most models and then one for the Mach 3D with a longer dust cover. Standard 3 slot rail grip module, with long/17 and short/15 backstraps: Extended 4 slot rail Mach3D grip module: Perhaps they merely meant that you don't have to change grip modules in most cases, just switching the Magstrap to go from Full/Carry to Compact. Not that the FCU and grip modules aren't modular/swappable.

I think what Jones is refering to is the changeable magstrap. Instead of changing the whole grip module like on 365 and 320, the 385 will come with s/m/l magstraps in the box, as Rogue points out.

I've heard varying comparisons of the grip texture to the Walther, MP 2.0. The MP 2.0 is pretty aggressive grip texture. Can you give me your impression of the grip texture vs the Glock Gen 6? Joe Back in Tx.

You're right. In that case, I can't blame jljones for being confused. I had the same reaction; One of the things I like about removable FCUs is that they preclude the need for interchangeable grip panels/straps (I always questioned their utility and they usually come at the expense of grip rigidity). I get that by having both the interchangeable straps and a removable FCU, that you can sort of have your cake and eat it too, but I just find it unnecessarily complex. I was just as surprised about the P385 as I was about the Echelon in that respect (I think they're the only two to do it so far).

Yeah, but it fits with Sig's trend since the P250/P320. They seem to be slowly moving away from significant modularity. P250/P320: Look at how easy it is to swap grip modules! We're going to offer a bunch of different ones for sale, as well as a wide variety of X-change kits for your FCU. P365: You can swap grip modules, but it's going to take a little work. We're going to offer a few different grip modules and a few X-change kits. P385: You can swap grip modules, but it's going to take a little work, and do you really want to when you can change just the grip length/girth alone? We're going to offer a couple grip modules. I'm personally glad they kept the modular FCU, mostly because it enables aftermarket grip makers to continue to offer their alternatives, like the excellent Wilson Combat grip modules that blow the factory grips out of the water.

The Wilson Combat P365x grip module was a dramatic improvement over the OEM for me. Some of these grip modules totally change the feel of the handgun in ways interchangeable backstraps can't match. I am a big Glock fan because of their simplicity but it's hard not to like the options a modular FCU gives you.
