In 1994, the president of Benchmade Knives, Les DeAsis, approached Emerson to manufacture the CQC6 on a larger scale as a factory production model. Preferring to keep the CQC6 as a custom-only knife, Emerson instead licensed a similar design of his, the CQC-7. Even though it did not have the craftsmanship of a handmade piece of cutlery, it satisfied customers with their own version of Emerson's work, at an affordable price and without the five-year wait. After the contract with Benchmade expired, Emerson began production of this model in his own factory, Emerson Knives, Inc., in 1999. From promo material at the time "Without a doubt, one of the most sought after folding fighters on the market today is the Benchmade CQC7 (Close Quarters Combat), designed by Ernest Emerson. Emerson and Benchmade share the same visions when it comes to knives: rugged beauty and superior reliability. Therefore, it was not surprising that the folks at Benchmade were eager to join forces with the leading name in combat folders. Also, Benchmade recently began producing both sizes of the CQC7 with the option of Black-Ti coated blades, which yield outstanding corrosion resistance." _________________________ NRA Endowment Member _________________________ "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. Got Mr. Horseman in today! This was the first time I have handled an Emerson and here are my initial impressions. The Size: While I was waiting for the knife to ship, I had a bit of concern about the size of the knife. I wanted a larger edc/farm knife so I wanted something with a little size to it but not too big that its uncomfortable for edc. When I pulled it out, it was exactly how I'd imagined it and perfect for my needs! The Handle: I felt like Spiderman just discovering that he sticks to everything. That really shocked me! These handles are super grippy! No wonder its such a great "hard use" knife! Finish: I have seen Emerson gets a bad wrap for the finish of the knives but mine looks great. The knife is perfectly centered when closed and it looks polished enough for me. Fit: I also knew going into this that they are pretty tight in the beginning. Now thats not a concern I have because I know it will loosen up with use. I do have a small concern and one that I wasn't expecting to have. While using the thumb disk to open the knife, I either have to perfectly position the knife in my hand, or after I start to open it, have to re-adjust my grip to finish opening the blade. I sort of have small hands for a guy my size and I guess my thumb just isn't long enough to have the knife comfortably in my hand and also be able to open the blade fully. I must admit, it has got me a little concerned. I want to be able to easily open and close the knife one handed. I do think, and you guys should be able to confirm this for me, that as I use the knife, the action gets smooth enough where I can just flick it open with my thumb. At this point the knife is so tight that I have to use my thumb the whole way or flick my wrist pretty hard to finish opening it. So, will it smooth out enough to where it becomes easy to open? Feel: This knife feels like an extension of my own hand. Its really a sweet knife! I will post some pics soon and do another review after I get a chance to use it. Posted from my iPhone. | |||
