Was in HD today. People were looking for N95 masks. They had none. They always have them.

Decided to check Amazon. Nothing. Filter for my 3M respirator are also sold out.

Don't need them myself as I have a few but people are going nuts.

As I’ve opined before, a “panic buyer” is the one who bought the last of what I wanted just before I tried to buy it.

Or as a paraphrase of the old, “I am firm, you are stubborn, he is a pig-headed fool,” in these situations it’s, “I am prudent, you are fearful, he is panicking.”

“ Enlightenment is man’s emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one’s own understanding without another’s guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one’s own mind without another’s guidance.”

Not near as I can tell. Not yet.

My wife and I went out to lay in extra supplies, just in case. Major groceries, etc. store. Traffic seemed pretty much normal. I eyeballed the carts of others. My wife's cart and mine were the only ones I saw that were indicative of "stocking up."

I'm not surprised by the masks thing. Consider the average home probably has (had?) none of them, of any type, in stock.

I've a mostly-full box of 3M N95 dust masks out in the garage because I use them regularly. We've an unopened pack of surgical masks down in the pantry, purchased last year when the first SARS outbreak looked like it could become an issue. I purchased a three-pack of reusable, washable cloth masks from Amazon a month ago. Hopefully that'll suffice.

Got one similar to that, too. And, I think, a spare set of filters.

No fatalities up to age 9. Only 0.2% mortality rate up to age 39 (regular flu is around 0.1%), climbing all the way up to almost 15% if you're 80. Most of the cases are in an overwhelmed area of China, so perhaps the mortality will drop elsewhere.

Right. It will drop elsewhere...
However, it's not the common flu.

It's actually ~3.4%, (based on Johns Hopkins CSSE) which is 68x the flu.

[2,770 (deaths) /81,322 (confirmed infected) * 100 ] = (0.034062 * 100) = 3.4%

Seriously? The President is addressing what many fear will be a life changing Pandemic, and the media ignores it?

The N95 masks will filter out particles 3 microns and larger.......the estimate of the corona virus is between 1 to 2 microns .... so, there’s that

Yes, but the virus largely vectors on particulate matter much larger than 3 microns. So it will work, if you follow the entire protocol (good seal, not touching under the mask, timely replacement, etc.).

Yup. As of now, it requires water droplets to carry it to be transferred through the air. The eyes are another matter from what I’ve heard. The CDC says it’s not a “main@ way it can be spread but that implies it’s possible. More likely from rubbing I suspect.

Good to know....I wonder if the masses are wearing properly? My guess in no. We fit test both our SCBA and N95 masks annually by OSHA standards (law) and I know from experience, if that N95 mask isn’t fitted and worn correctly, you fail the fit test miserably.

Are you guys serious about walking around wearing a respirator?
