Sort of collective general updates, and ongoing:

https://www.sciencemediacentre...profen-or-cortisone/

And from the BMJ:

https://www.bmj.com/content/368/bmj.m606/rr-10

Regarding NSAIDs, the concern is that anti-inflammatories in general reduce the body's immune response, hence reduce production of antibodies necessary to fight off the virus (same BTW applies to the flu). Early studies don't necessarily model the way things actually work. Same with ACE inhibitors - although the ACE-2 receptor site is important in developing methods to treat active disease. As far as ACE inhibitors increasing risk for infection or making it worse, the Lancet suggests it but again early, and also suggests alternatives:

https://documentcloud.adobe.co...83-be4c-80f332d98e3a

My personal thinking is that it's far too early to tell from limited studies, or the course of the disease itself, what does or doesn't increase risk (other than well established preventive measures such as limiting contact, and known comorbidities), particularly with existing pharmacotherapy that may be necessary to prevent stroke or cardiac events - from which a patient may be at higher risk. Important as always to ask your own physician.
As we see broader testing and both increased deaths (unfortunately), and increased recoveries, we'll know more and can make better recommendations based on reasonable data.

I thought of starting a new thread in the "What's Your Deal" forum, because this just makes me angry. But since it's coronavirus related...

Iran releases 85,000 inmates as coronavirus sweeps through prisons: 'we're all ill'.

Yeah, that's the ticket, send out 85,000 "Typhoid Marys" where half of them are also "security-related prisoners."

"It is expected that those freed will have to return, but authorities have yet to announce a date."

Yeah, a blurb to assuage the bleeding hearts at the U. N. requested this move.

We've become a planet of morons.

You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless.

The problem with what we're seeing in the grocery store, is the food demand right now in the U.S. has suddenly shifted and nobody was prepared for it. Sysco and other restaurant purveyors are overstocked to the gills with food, because much less people are not going to restaurants and are grocery shopping and eating at home. Grocery stores weren't ready for the instant demand and on top of it, truck drivers and stock personnel are taking off of work to babysit. Sysco and it's competitors can't sell their food to normal people like grocery stores due to labeling/portions etc. and are overstocked with perishables and talking about giving it away to food banks. I think we have plenty of food, it just has to be shifted to where it has to go (grocery stores versus restaurant supply companies).

We don't really have a shortage of toilet paper in the country, we just have a ton of people that bought 3 months worth in 2 weeks time. The supply just has to catch up.

Archdiocese of St. Louis suspends all public masses over coronavirus concerns
The church will offer live streams of mass from The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis during the suspension

ST. LOUIS — The Archdiocese of St. Louis has suspended all public masses until at least April 6 over coronavirus concerns.

In a statement, Archbishop Robert Carlson said the decision was made after conferring with his advisory team and health and government officials.

Earlier in the day, President Trump and health officials advised Americans to avoid gatherings of 10 or more people to help fight the spread of the virus.

Oh, yes. When I was a kid we grew a bunch of herbs plus a variety of pepper plants. The mint spread all through the flowerbeds and was impossible to control.

Interestingly, last time I fertilized the planter with citrus fertilizer it killed about half the mint outright and made the rest look pretty sickly for a couple weeks.

Just a view of life in France right now.

France's coronavirus lockdown: What you can and can't do

A strict 15-day lockdown requiring people in France to remain at home came into effect at midday Tuesday, prohibiting all but essential outings in a bid to curb the coronavirus spread. Here’s a quick guide on how to navigate the lockdown.

"We are at war, a public health war,” President Emmanuel Macron said in a sombre address on Monday, declaring a nationwide lockdown to fight a virus that has already killed 148 people in France and infected more than 6,000.

His government has said tens of thousands of police will be patrolling streets and issuing fines for people without a written declaration justifying their reasons for being out.

FRANCE 24 takes a closer look at the government’s measures and the exceptions to the confinement rules.

Non-essential movements banned

“The message is clear: stay at home,” Interior Minister Christophe Castaner declared on Monday as he detailed the restrictions included in the 15-day lockdown. There are five exceptions to that injunction:

Travelling to work is permitted so long as the work is essential, cannot be postponed, and cannot be done from home

Shopping for groceries and other essential items is allowed; there is no need for panic-buying as supermarkets and bakers can remain open throughout the lockdown

Exceptions are also made for “imperative family reasons”, such as looking after children and the elderly. In practice, parents with shared custody can travel between each other’s homes; shopping for an elderly relative is also allowed (as long as people keep to a safe distance when visiting vulnerable relatives)

Brief outings to get some exercise or take pets for a walk are allowed, albeit “with parsimony”; Castaner stressed that all group activities, such as playing a football match, are strictly banned

All health-related appointments are permitted, including trips to the pharmacy. For all information on the coronavirus outbreak, dial 08 00 130 000, free of charge.

Travel pass

All people leaving their homes must carry a signed form, or attestation, explaining where they are headed and why. A different form is needed for each outing. Failure to produce one will result in a fine.

In the absence of a printer, it can be filled in online and displayed on a smartphone. Alternatively, a written document will be accepted, as long as it is dated and states the person’s full name, address, date of birth and reason for travel.

The form details the five motives listed above; tick the relevant box when filling it in.

Penalties

Some 100,000 police and gendarmes will be out on the streets to enforce the lockdown and check that people carry a signed attestation. Failure to produce one will result in a 38-euro fine, which may rise to 135 euros at a later stage.

The rules will be enforced throughout continental France and in the overseas territories of Saint-Barthélémy, Saint-Martin and Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. They apply until March 31, but may be renewed if deemed necessary.

Exceptions are made for health workers and journalists, who can present their professional cards when travelling for work.

Contrary to rumours circulating before Macron’s announcements on Monday, the French army will not be deployed at this stage to enforce the lockdown. Instead, the military will help transport the sick and set up a field hospital in the hard-hit Alsace region.

Cuomo attacked first, during a phone conference with reporters Monday morning, when he said the federal government has been “behind from day one of this crisis.” The administration’s response to the deadly virus has been “inexcusable,” Cuomo said.

Cuomo made his remarks before he announced that he and Govs. Phil Murphy of New Jersey and Ned Lamont of Connecticut had agreed to coordinate the closings of certain businesses and limit public gatherings to fewer than 50 people in their states.

“States, frankly, don’t have the capacity or the power to make up for the federal government,” Cuomo said, citing “a lack of federal direction and nationwide standards.”

During the video conference Monday morning, Trump reportedly suggested that the governors work on their own to try to obtain breathing equipment needed for people diagnosed with the coronavirus.

“Respirators, ventilators, all of the equipment – try getting it yourselves,” Trump told the state leaders, The New York Times reported, citing a recording of the conference call.

“We will be backing you, but try getting it yourselves,” Trump added, according to the Times. “Point of sales, much better, much more direct if you can get it yourself.”

Shortly after the president’s tweet, Cuomo hit back: “I have to do more? No — YOU have to do something! You’re supposed to be the President.”

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

"I have to do more ?" yes Cuomo. Your state has the most confirmed cases. So quit whining and go help solve the problem.

Maybe Bloomberg has a few billion to go do something for the country rather than to the country. And where are the great charity activists like the Clinton Foundation and the Bill Gates Foundation ?

https://thehill.com/policy/hea...-could-be-in-45-days

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) warned Tuesday at a press conference that the number of coronavirus cases in the state might not peak for another 45 days

xxxxxxxxxxxxx

NY currently by far has the most confirmed cases across U.S. states (1700 at 1:44pm EDT)

One ugly illegal alien issue no one is talking about. We may have to do triage w negative effects against older Americans while providing care to 15 million illegals. Wait till that sinks in.

So you can't go for a walk, but you can go for a run? With a permission slip? Who the fuck signs that permission slip?

Is there a speed you have to maintain before that job turns into a walk?

Is parkour acceptable??

From UpToDate, a medical reference for physicians:

Chloroquine/hydroxychloroquine – Both chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine inhibit SARS-CoV-2 in vitro, although hydroxychloroquine appears to have more potent antiviral activity [75]. A number of clinical trials are underway in China to evaluate the use of chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19 [76].

From PubMed:
In Vitro Antiviral Activity and Projection of Optimized Dosing Design of Hydroxychloroquine for the Treatment of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Here is an article from Stanford University recommending incorporating chloroquine and/or hydroxychloroquine into treatment guidelines, based on reports of successful use in China.

An Effective Treatment for Coronavirus (Covid-19)

Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are only available by prescription in the US, both are generic, but not very inexpensive per DrugRx.com (you can look that up). You can get discount coupons from DrugRx.com for whatever chain pharmacy you use.

I got a supply of hydroxychloroquine Sunday from Wal-Mart—not for prevention, but for treatment if needed.

Expect to see a run on these drugs.

I think it was ABC's Jonathan Karl who attempted to nick Trump on failing at treating this health emergency in a bipartisan fashion. Trump responded, without rancor (paraphasing): "When somebody lies about me, this great team we have, or how we're handling the crisis, I'm going to respond. Next question."

Slapped him right down. I nearly applauded Smile

I've a couple times had GPs that would prescribe to me just about anything I requested, within reason. My current doc is not quite so obliging. I doubt I could just call him up and say "Hey, doc, I'd like a prescription for hydroxychloroquine. It's supposed to be good for treating the Wu Flu. So, you know: Just in case."

He'd probably be annoyed with me when, upon asking why, I responded with "I read about it on the Intertubez." Wink

New York is a very big "hotspot":

1700 cases now confirmed...
Washington State used to be the Wu Flu leader, now it's New York with its' high population density.

I have heard the above combined with Zinc can make it so the virus can't reproduce. How would one get a supply of it?

The check is in the mail.

"Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Tuesday that the Trump administration wants to send checks to Americans “in the next two weeks” in an effort to help people cope with the economic fallout due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We’re looking at sending checks to Americans immediately,” Mnuchin said during a press briefing from the White House. “Americans need cash now, the president wants to get cash now. I mean now—in the next few weeks.”

Also outlined planes to defer tax payments for up to 90 days.

I am wondering if it has to do with their eating habits that is; NYC people seem to have a tendency to eat out more often than the rest of the nation and hence, with the virulence of the virus, NYC may be in a position to spread the virus with more efficiency.
