I am wondering how much of the threats to kill the filibuster and pack the Supreme Court are real and how much is bluster to get the Republicans in congress and SCOTUS to partially go along with a lite version of their "progressive" agenda. The judicial appointment filibuster killed by Harry Reid's Senate has turned into a disaster for democrats given the number of federal judges confirmed by Mitch McConnell over the past few years. Certainly killing other filibusters will backfire when the tables turn as they always do. FDR's court packing threat was a message to stop striking down his new deal laws, and SCOTUS did indeed back off to some degree.

Some democrats seem to think that nuking the filibuster to pass the election "reform" bill will give them enough of an advantage to hold the Senate by fixing the 2022 elections, and preventing future Republican majorities, and thus no backfiring will happen. But it's not a sure bet because election reform is going to get a constitutional challenge, and SCOTUS is not likely to allow sweeping changes to the voting system. Roberts is a status quo guy that doesn't want to stick his neck out on anything. So if the democrats lose that, and the push back against their agenda is strong (expected due to Biden's dismal start and the rise in crime), they will lose the House and Senate and then the Republicans can pass anything they want without a filibuster. Big gamble.
