Just got a donation request letter from the local chapter. I enclosed a sincere note of apology for not donating.
I had to put a stamp on the envelope in order to mail it back. So I guess I donated after all!

Well, here in UK they don't seem to have heard of this at all. At least the Major in charge of a local brass band looked at me blankly when I mentioned it.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^ could be that only the US branch is populated with imbeciles.

On the local evening news, they had a crew covering the SA bell ringers in front of the local Walmart. They interviewed the Major in charge & he said that they're over $12 grand behind in donations from where they were last year at this time. And alot of people were still skeered of covid last year, and didn't go out.

Only 12 grand behind? Not enough whiteys read the apology article I guess

I was out last night and the SA was ringing the bell. Guy asked (which is a first around here at least) for a donation. I told him "no thinks, I usually give, but going WOKE, I hope y'all go broke", and walked on.


He looked as if he had heard that more than once. I got done shopping and I sat in my car for 20 minutes ordering dinner and waiting. I didn't see one person drop anything in the kettle.

Way back on Page 3 of this Thread, I told of my experience with the Salvation Army in Vietnam, my donations since and, finally, that I was through with them.

My wife and I have to go out this morning and we will be passing by a place where the SA always has bellringers during the Christmas season.

I certainly will not take out my disgust and disappointment on the person ringing the bell, but if they ask me, then I'll tell them nicely and politely but firmly "No!" and exactly why.

I'm still really disappointed in the Salvation Army.

It's sad- The people on the ground doing the work of the SA are probably the same people who have always dedicated themselves to doing the work that makes them special. I doubt the leadership of the SA reflects the beliefs of the people who actually do the work.

Why would they let politics subvert the good that they do?

True. Over the DECADES I've donated far more stuff - the better stuff - to SA while being more of a Goodwill shopper. After a house fire they are the ones who show up; although I've heard stories of SA billing for fire response, I'd assume that goes through fire insurance.

That said, in these parts the bell ringers are sometimes barely awake; dark sunglasses and very casual clothes are normal. Zero fundraising professionalism, while 30 years ago a "bell ringer" might have been in a suit with a French horn instead of the bell.

I stopped giving to the Salvation Army in 2017 when they decided to stop having fundraisers at Mar-a-Lago.

Sunday was the first day in a looong time that I walked by the kettle without putting money in it. I was quite sad about it, and decided not to take it out on the volunteer. I just walked by like they were dead to me.

I feel ya. I've been thinking I might buy them a beverage or donut or something for their service as the bottom rung of the ladder.

I haven't even seen an SA kettle and bell ringer this season in front of the usual grocery store I shop at although, admittedly, I haven't been near other major retail centers like shopping malls they might stake out.

I realize it's late in the giving season but I thought I'd offer a few worthy charitable alternatives to the Salvation Army:

The Prison Fellowship Angel Tree program - a high percentage of children with one or both parents in prison tend to eventually end up in prison themselves. The Prison Fellowship Angel Tree program raises funds to send Christmas gifts to the children in the name of the parent in prison and also raises funds to send them to Summer Camps and Sports Camps, all while brining a message that they are loved and a message of Christ.

Step Denver - formerly Step 13. Step Denver is a program that works to help men who are homeless due to alcohol or drug addiction. Their program is based on the 4 pillars of sobriety, work, accountability, and community. They only accept men who are sober when they walk in, and eject any who get drunk or high while in the program, although they can reapply to enter later. All the men are required to work full time tax paying jobs while living at the facility and are required to both pay a small amount of the total to offset the expenses to house them, and they are also required to participate in the upkeep of the facility, like making beds, cleaning kitchens and bathrooms etc.. The men are also given various classes on life coping and work skills, and given access to resources such as medical/ dental, haircuts etc.. the men start out living in a dormitory environment, but as they progress and prove reliable and responsible they earn and are rewarded with increasing autonomy and privacy, to the point where they actually have their own small room.

Some of their most successful graduates are hired full time to stay on and help run the program while serving as both an example of success and inspiration to those going through the program. Many who successful complete the program have gone on to buying their own homes, starting families, and even re-establishing relationships with estranged family members.

Step Denver does NOT accept any government funding, instead funded either by monetary donations or donations of vehicles. Step Denver operates small internal businesses in which they "hire" their men as employees, doing things like rebuilding donated vehicles and selling them, car detailing, or offering services as movers as laborers.

The program has been so successful that they are in the process of trying to expand their own program to include separate facilities to help women, and are in the process of trying to export the program model to other cities and states.

Couple weeks ago they were begging on the local news for volunteers.
Couple days later they announced they were cutting back on locations by 50% or more...
...Wait for it
Because Covid.

Pure BS.
They didn't just piss off the donors but the volunteer workers as well. I haven't seen even one single collection point set up so far this year.
