A lot of supposed great rock/pop singers often sound bad live, which I don't automatically take to mean they can't sing extremely well in studio or under the right conditions.

In my opinion, I always loved Whitney Houstons voice and the crank of Tina Turner and Chaka Khan.

Agree Karen Carpenter has an amazing voice but I'd call it more pop.
For a rock voice I'd vote Pat Benetar.

Elizabeth "Lzzy" Hale isn't shabby.

I tend to like female-vocalist bands because women typically have clearer voices than men. LAPD uses female dispatchers for this reason. (This info is old and may have changed.)

I will go with Janis Joplin...a lot because of Big Brother And The Holding Company whom she oft-times fronted...also Pat Benitar and of course Joan Jett. There are so many!

Well, if Julie Andrews is in consideration for best female rock vocalist of all time, I’d like to nominate Kate Smith.

Never did. WABX in Detroit gave them airtime. Strange how memories come back, first time I listened to them, "Going Back To Colorado" was being aired. I was on my way to Ann Arbor to get parts for my '67 BSA. That voice, I thought "wow".

Cool though that someone else here recognized the name.

No one mentioned Leather Leone? Big Grin She flipped me off at a show. Hahaha.

I do dig some Karen Carpenter but for actual rock Pat Benetar has the voice. Her recent stuff is lighter and jazzier. It's a good evolution.

A lot of the names I am seeing I would not consider Rock vocalists. Ann Wilson is tops in my book, goose pimples when she is singing.
