Lzzy Hale from Halestorm has some serious metal/rock vocal talent. This is her doing a Ronnie Dio cover of “Straight Through the Heart”.

She had a fantastic voice.

That song was written by Dolly Parton. She said the first time she heard Whitney Houston's version, she was moved to tears and said 'now it's her song'.

Houston yells through half the song. She ruined it IMO.

Never did. WABX in Detroit gave them airtime. Strange how memories come back, first time I listened to them, "Going Back To Colorado" was being aired. I was on my way to Ann Arbor to get parts for my '67 BSA. That voice, I thought "wow".

Cool though that someone else here recognized the name.

Saw them a couple of times. Tulagi’s in Boulder and (I think) Ebbets Field. Those that don’t know Candy may know Tommy Bolin, although Jock Bartley played with them when I saw them.

Kudos to doublesharp for nominating Lou Ann Barton—Austin Blues (rock) legend. Loyalty to Arizonan, Stevie Nicks, causes me to believe she belongs at or near the top. Tina Turner, for sure. I appreciate that Ronnie Bennett Spector was nominated too.

Since there is no “winner,” I’ll add a couple more. Taylor Momsen (band, Pretty Reckless) has a great rock voice. Danielle Nicolle—Trampled Under Foot and Danielle Nicolle Band. The late Dolores O’Riordan, Devil Doll (Colleen Duffy). Not sure if Etta James and Koko Taylor should be nominated since they’re more pure Blues, but then given that fact that...were nominated, hey

I second Ann Wilson and will throw in Pat Benatar for good measure.

I think of Janis Joplin as a blues singer, which is the only reason I give her a tie with Ann Wilson. Karen Carpenter is a better singer, but she's pop.

I'm amazed anybody thinks Benetar or Jett better than Ann Wilson.

I agree with this post. First name that popped into my head. Great minds and all that... Big Grin

Too hard to pick one.

Two that haven't been mentioned (although they fall in the Prog Rock/Folk Rock genres):
Anne Haslam of Renaissance
Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention

Let me help you out. Which way did you come in?
