Chach, I'd look at the Man O War Virtue for a nice conny wrapped cigar. As I've said before, I'm not a huge Connecticut fan. The Virtue is as close to it as I've come though. I would look at picking up a sampler that includes a couple of them.. I my experience, the RP Connecticut isn't a great example of a fine cigar..
What else came in the sampler you got? I thin your said you're fairly new to this, and maybe we could help walk you through what you have and what you might pair it with or when to try it.. Just a thought..

Chach, I'd also look at the Perdomo Champagne (or the champagne 10th anniversary) for another nice conny wrapped smoke to compare to the RP..

Just sitting down with an Ashton VSG I picked up a few weeks ago. Milder than I had expected, but I smoked a major pepper bomb last night; this is better for the palate.

Question for the group:
How would you describe the differences between pepper, spicy, and sour?

Pepper and spice tend to overlap for me sometimes. The best way I describe spice is a black liquorish taste and the the smoke sits in the back of my throat and I feel the need to wash down the smoke because it irritates my throat.

To me sour is when I feel the dry heat towards the end of a stick, I might take one more puff to be sure, but then into the ashtray it goes.

I rate spicy as how numb my lips get, just like getting a good heat from salsa (you know, the EXX one), where you want another hit to keep that numb buzz going.

Like eating spicy food. Makes my mouth water and leaves a tingling or numbness on the lips.

Not necessary my favorite, but had a JAVA that I've never had yesterday that was an easy smoke, sweet, nice draw and was very balanced.

Dave, are you a fan of infused cigars or was this just a one-time thing?

Ardbeg perpetuum, and some golden leaf. Just lit it, so far a nice mild pepper, some cocoa creamy undertones.

A lot of the cigar groups turn into whiny, bashfests that I really do not need to deal with.

Spicy to me is usually black or white pepper when it comes to cigars. I have not had one that tasted like a jalapeño or habanero peppers. My lips go numb at times but mostly my tongue and throat sting from the pepper. I don't get sour, but bitter I do get. What's the difference, sour makes me pucker and bitter makes my face do an "eek". Mostly the bitter comes from stale smoke or not clearing the cigar but can be from a bad stick too. If I get to that point and clearing doesn't help, I toss it.

Another fantastic Connecticut is the My Father Connecticut. I am not a fan of most mild bodied cigars, but the My Father and Man O War Virtue are two of my favorites. These are full of flavor to make up for the lack of the punch. Which is good. There is nothing worse than smoking a bland, mild cigar. If I wanted that, I would smoke a toothpick!

I am sitting outside smoking a Man O War Ruination dodging rain drops. Yesterday I had another Blend Lab KK and an Obsidian black that would not stay lit for me. The flavors were OK but I had to relight it 6 times to get through it...and it was only 4" long!

About an inch into it and picking up some sweet hints of something. I think i picked the perfect scotch to pair it with. The Ardbeg has a smooth cocoa finish that the cigar adds a sweetness too. A great smoke so far.

The retrohale is really good. Slight burn with a smooth flavor. Buy some! Im buying more for sure. Definitely worth the price here.

Jay definitely agree best cigar I've had this year. I can't wait to see how they are in the fall. 6 months age on these and they will be even better. IMHO while excellent seemed a bit young, but as I mentioned before mine were very wet.

Crowned Heads Calaveras left Nicaragua so I am a week out from gettin my preorder. These are rolled by the Garcia's. Really looking forward to these. Crowned heads also does a TAA release these are scheduled for June these are definitely on list to pick up. Last years stick was one of my favorites of all cigars last year.

Do you mean the tatuaje TAA. CH only started doing them in 2014.

The tatuaje 2013 was the same blend as the 10th anniversary / brown band. They skipped their usual blend that year.

So the Ashton that I smoked, what a great flavor! Nutty would describe it best, like a roasted cashew. Any suggestions on other sticks that would replicate this?

Thanks I'll check it out. As for what I got, wasn't a sampler per se but I picked out a few from their singles selection, they had a buy 4 get one free deal. So I got 2x Gurkha Park Avenue, a Rocky Patel Conn, Macanudo Cafe & Hyde Park (smoking now. Like it though somewhat bland / earthy) and an Oliva Conn Reserve.

Figured I'd try mild - mild / media at first. Looking around the site I like the sound of the Mistakes and Original Cuban (iirc) but they only come I bundle of 20.

I would agree that spicy is usually a peppery taste and not a hot pepper taste. Once in a while I'll get a gar that makes my tongue or lips go numb in a spicy sort of way. I also don't know that I've ever really had a sour cigar.. If nubbed, most turn bitter (I guess it could be considered sour depending on how your taste it), and some will turn bitter much sooner. This is usually associated with a noticeable bit of tar in the head.

I smoked another MOW Immortal War Horse with my brother. The second was as good as the first. However, I can say that the size had enough tobacco to make you feel it. I smoked it with a dark roast black coffee, and it was really good. Both cigars had a great draw and burn.

Chach, I'm guessing your finding what most find with a conny wrapped cigar. Unless it's a really good cigar, it tends to be rather bland. If you are wanting to keep in the mild smokes, you also could try a maduro wrapped light cigar (5 Vegas Gold maduro, Perdomo Champagne Noir, etc). The Maduro wrapper may provide some complexity with out knocking your socks off. Once you step into medium sticks, you'll find a ton more flavor and depth. Btw, I've never smoked either of the 2 you mentioned. Keep playing with the samplers, and you'll find something much more exciting..
