How about a hail of bullets? That's kind of the universal modern world's version of "don't fuck with us." Methinks the noble savages would understand the message. Speaking the "lingua franca" as it were.

Yeah, we can't do that. It would violate the prime directive.

An attempt to get his body failed.

Why are they even trying to get the body?

It’s not going to be used as evidence against the islanders. Tell the family tough and be done with all this. Stop wasting money and endangering more people.

Chau went to "share the love of Jesus," said Mary Ho, international executive leader of All Nations. All Nations, a Kansas City, Missouri-based organization, helped train Chau, discussed the risks with him and sent him on the mission, to support him in his "life's calling," she added.

They knew they were sending him to his death.

Every religion says this, doesn't it? Who "understands" correctly? How can you tell? All faith is non-rational at its root. Why not just accept that, and believe what you like without feeling compelled to tell everyone else that they are wrong?

Everyone's faith sounds absurd to those who don't share it. Some religionists can't seem to understand this.

As someone once said, we all have access to the same facts, subject to interpretation. I choose to interpret in light of a creation event, as opposed to a random accident. I choose inherent design over random mutation.

I hope you're not serious about the whole "hail of bullets" thing.

Can't help but wonder what the would-be evangelist's final thoughts were. There had to be a point, when he was surrounded by natives, with arrows likely sticking out of him, that he had to realize that he had probably made a big mistake. He may have realized, also, that he was pretty unlikely to convert even one person to Christianity....even though he brought a fish and a football as gifts. Rough day, to be sure. He could have elsewhere, doing other things - safe, fun and productive things - but he wasn't.

I spoke with a christian evangelist (a real one, not a tv preacher rip off artist) and he said he quit evangelizing in the US because people didn't want to hear about it. He said there were lots of places in the world where he goes that people DO want to hear the christian gospel. I would call that practical wisdom. IIRC he was pretty successful outside of the US.

I hope you're not serious about the whole "hail of bullets" thing.

Why not? I see it this way.

The Indian Proper Authorities, who claim jurisdiction over this island, and who have passed the law saying that random people aren't supposed to go there, decide to go get the body. Something they are entirely within their sovereign rights as Proper Authorities to do.

They are met with a hail of arrows, apparently being the local Noble Savage welcoming custom, and which evidently means "get the fuck out" in native Sentinalise.

The Proper Authorities then reply with a hail of bullets, which means "don't fuck with us" in modern Indian.

The two parties have now communicated in a language that they both understand. There should be no need for further discussions. The Proper Authorities recover the body, and the Noble Savage Sentinalise get a few bodies of their own. And maybe, just maybe, they learn something from the encounter, notably, that "don't fuck with people" works both ways.

It's kind of Human Interaction 101, the really basic stuff.

And for those of you who think I'm kidding, just try stopping any representative of national sovereignty, in pretty much any sovereign jurisdiction, from doing what they want to do by shooting arrows at them. Let me know how well that works out for you. I'll be over here, hiding behind something solid that provides both cover and concealment.
