This is the most significant fact about an incident like this. This incident was minor relative to the Ferguson event or even the recent attack on officers with water buckets, but the principles are all the same. When a critical mass of people believe that they can ignore the law and resist those whom we hire to enforce the law legally and reasonably on the behalf of the rest of us, the nation is headed for as much trouble as can be imagined. Obama didn’t start that trend with his saying that certain elements of our society had good reason to not trust, and therefore resist the police, but he certainly gave it a boost. Nothing much, if anything at all, has served to slow, much less reverse that trend. We are already well along the road to temporary anarchy followed by a lurch to totalitarianism when enough people become sufficiently frightened to allow it. Elvis help us when the people who should know better than to push us along that road start defending resistance to the rule of legitimate law. And for those who (still) believe that the incident should have been handled differently, just exactly what should have been different? Specifics, please, along with some sort of rational explanation. ► 6.4/93.6 “Most men … can seldom accept the simplest and most obvious truth if it … would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions … which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabrics of their lives.” — Leo Tolstoy

My mother, age 66, heard this kind of silly bullshit for many years in the 70’s and 80’s working traffic before going to YSD. I sent her a link to the video and her response was, and I quote: “Ha ha ha! Body slam the bitch!” That lady is lucky she got handled in this day and time frame because my mother would’ve deployed her sap to gain compliance.
Since we’re talking mothers in that age bracket, I’ll say this: if you think your mother is prone to that sort of behavior, you need to prepare for the eventuality that she’s going to have some rather poor interactions with all sorts of folks, and hope that they’re LEO’s wearing body cameras with the whole internet tallying in on the accountability and not just some methbilly who won’t think twice about strangling some mouthy old broad. For myself, I have no such worries about my mother instigating herself into some similarly stupid foolishness. Does she remind you of your mama? Does she act like that? Is that why you’re white knighting for this horrible woman? ______________________________________________ “There are plenty of good reasons for fighting, but no good reason ever to hate without reservation, to imagine that God Almighty Himself hates with you, too.”

I would pray if it were my mother that did that, she’d get every bit of that. And then prosecuted to the fullest. Where I work carries no bearing in allowing my family to act like asses in public. That is clearly showing she has no respect for anyone, especially her family.

No, my mother never acted like that, when she was alive. Didn't take long for this to devolve into a personal attack. I do not "white knight" this horrid woman, and I am glad I don't know her. I simply think that the situation could have been handled better by the officer. Her bad behavior does not warrant the street justice meted out to her. The day Onumbnutzshithead had his "beer summit" and threw that police officer under the bus for doing his thankless job. THAT'S when it started. That Kenyan sunuvabitch... What is this "street justice" you're speaking of? Care to define it? The cop gave her every chance, but this moron was clearly resisting arrest and was fighting back. Taser was appropriate, as far as I'm concerned. And, like jones said, if my mother acted like that, which I know she would never have done, if she were still alive, then she deserves the treatment. I was raised in the south, to respect my elders, to respect women and to respect law enforcement. One of the hardest things to learn for me as a rookie was that just because a person is old does not mean they are nice. Felons get old, too. Not all women are the southern ladies I was raised by. As far as street Justice, I didn't see any of that in the video. She was repeatedly warned, the officer was always in control of his emotions and only increased the level of force equal to the level of resistance presented. Things have changed since 91 when I started policing, but street justice this ain't.

Good video, however would have been a bit better with more shaking going on. That taser seemed a bit low on juice. All, in all, still entertaining. “We’re in a situation where we have put together, and you guys did it for our administration…President Obama’s administration before this. Back in the late 80's, I got a speeding ticket in New Orleans, 38mph in a 35 zone or something similar, while on the way to the airport. Cop had me sign the ticket, and confiscated my La. drivers license! I asked how I would rent a car at my destination? He said the rental company had a book which showed that La. confiscated your DL and accepted the signed ticket as proof of a valid DL. He was right!!! The car rental agent at my destination, did remind me that traffic violations were my responsibility, and if the rental car was towed or impounded that was my responsibility also, plus the cost of any expenses the rental company incurred. Do not know if this still occurs in N.O. or Orleans Parish, but back then it seemed as if every other car on the road had a cardboard sign in the rear window which said "La. Tag Applied For" though often almost illegible, or misspellings!!! So you had little choice but to sign the ticket! Jim

Watching the video I'd think- She got what she deserved. If she's that rude and belligerent to the police officer- How do you think she'd treat you or me on the road? ____________________________________________________ The butcher with the sharpest knife has the warmest heart.

Iowa cop here. Yes and no. They’re criminal in that they’re defined by code as misdemeanors. That’s just how the code books define them, and you could be arrested and taken to jail for something like not wearing a seatbelt. Where my sgency issues a citation for no valid DL, Smaller counties tend to take the person into custody and have them jailed. Folks who get convicted of running a stop sign, speeding, or any ther offense where they were issued a citation have, by the letter of the law, a conviction for a criminal offense. Literally nobody views it that way. You’re not going to miss out on jobs or federa loans or get a Visa revoked because you got convicted of speeding. It’s still just a traffic offense, and I know there are other states where traffic offenses are criminal, too. It’s kinds like how in Illinois, getting charged with a felony is really no big deal because EVERYTHING is a felony in that state. Third offense driving on a suspended license? Felony. In Iowa? Always a simple misdemeanor, and in most places, a Traffic ticket and a “have a nice day.” From the Iowa Code if you’re curious: 321.482 Violations — simple misdemeanors unless otherwise provided. It is a simple misdemeanor for a person to do an act forbidden or to fail to perform an act required by this chapter unless the violation is by this chapter or other law of this state declared to be a serious or aggravated misdemeanor or a felony ****************************** May our caskets be made of hundred-year oak, and may we plant those trees tomorrow.

If it were your mother, you would be too emotionally invested to be able to make a rational, dispassionate assessment of the situation. We can't let our laws hinge on emotion - that's how we had to do things for 8 years while president sparklemuffin was in office ('Trevon Martin could have been my son'...). "My mother" would not react this way. And, guess what? If she did, she would deserve to get her butt tased. Fear God and Dread Nought Admiral of the Fleet Sir Jacky Fisher

I'll ask again: WHAT should the officer have done differently? That was a text-book example of an officer acting calm and maintaining control, with proper escalation of force. And since when is getting tazed 'Street Justice?' Fear God and Dread Nought Admiral of the Fleet Sir Jacky Fisher

I initially copied-and-pasted the video title directly, which contained an extra word: "Cop tasers old woman for fleeing from an $80 ticket". That seemed to make it even more of an indictment of excessive force, so I removed one word to lessen that connotation.

You don’t get it? The officer should have just walked away. He should not have enforced the law. IT’S FOR THE CHILDREN!!!! (Or the elderly in this case) Because failing to enforce the law has always worked out so well. You look at the problems in Baltimore and other crime ridden places and I ll show you cops that have been forced to “walk away” instead of societies “or else”. I can show you two agencies right now. One that criminals respect and one that doesn’t. One isn’t the or else. They tell you to stop, and if you don’t, well they’ll tell you to stop again. The other asks nicely, tells and then they make. Guess which the public and criminals respect?
