I wonder if it was related to a background search on a username or email for some security clearance application. Pretty much everything else is public here already.

You’ve been nothing but supportive of any LEO.
This individual is deluded and this little game being played perhaps worked well elsewhere.

Thank you.

The quality or lack thereof with social media and the discourse on those platforms could be partially to blame. Most people have never experienced anything like Sigforum.

Most Social media platforms make it VERY easy to sign up. Almost by design the platforms seek to engage you in constant arguments and the quality of discussion is awful. Moderation on these platforms is a joke.

But hey, I’ll point the finger at social media whenever I can.

I will try a speculative summary, my opinion.

College age child (Austin area?) with some access to a parents connection, or deep hacker got into DHS.

Horribly uninformed however, and certainly not professional grade communications from a near retirement age system user. Even geezers like me get it. The threats, sidelining and accusations read like they were using "The Gentleman's Rules of the Internet," otherwise known as the Trollers Guide to Internet Mayhem, often used by Soros disrupters. Phishing the member rolls and eventually inserting themselves in conversations to disrupt is often the intent.

Socialist hacker shill and patently incompetent.I think Para took the correct tone up front to see how they would react - and they did. Flushed him out very quickly.

Question: is there any app/program/hack that can make something "look" like its from DHS, an ISP spoofer like seeing your own phone calling you from a robodialer?

Long story short . That guy tried too hard . Too many follow up e-mails . Argumentative , etc. His intentions were clear , Sneak in under the radar and see what he could learn . What people were saying about certain topics , etc. He misjudged your ability and your diligence .

Once again Para, thank you for your extraordinary gatekeeping. If this guy really is close to retirement, the sooner the better. Based on this exchange it's doubtful he adds much value to his office/department. And as others have pointed out, had he taken time to read through a few topics he'd have realized you (and us) are fiercely loyal to any and all LEOs.

I don’t think this person had good intentions.

Probably most of us only log in to post.

Everything is viewable without a membership.

The hotmail address is also suspect for a younger person, you can still acquire one; however there’s extra steps to do so that you’d have to research.

Either way good riddance.

This forum is overwhelming positive to law enforcement. To say otherwise is ridiculous.

Perhaps, but I've never encountered any evidence of such. Besides, the way this played out, it would have been pointless to attempt such a thing.

Quite frankly, I get the impression that I look much more closely at registrants than do other discussion forum admins. Recall that people were saying that when you get ripped off on other boards, the usual response is "There's not much we can do." Well, one thing that can be done is stopping this crap before it begins.

No.

Somewhat technical explanation:

Web (HTTP/HTTPS) connections use TCP (Transmission Control Protocol). TCP is a is a connection-oriented protocol, which means the two ends of the connection execute a process that creates a virtual end-to-end connection.

For that to succeed, each end must be able to route packets to the other end. If one end spoofed its IP address, return packets would go to the wrong place and the virtual connection would fail.

(There is an exception to the above, called Asymmetric Routing. But that's something not germane to this discussion.)

An enlightening peak behind the curtain of the goings-on in running a forum. I appreciate your diligence in keeping Sigforum running so well.

I believe Sigforum and you have always shown support for law enforcement. In my opinion, negative impressions of law enforcement officers originate at the bureaucratic/policy level and those connotations (unfairly) are associated with the everyday officer (local, state, or federal).

The last email I got from him (immediately after my last email to him) said, in part:

"Good day to you as well. I have just been accepted by two sites. I asked people to
critique our conversation and they are amazed."

Uh huh. He registers for two forums, and as the greenest of FNGs on those sites, he tells his sad tale, and people are "amazed."

Wow, that all happened so quickly and smoothly, huh? Just like that, he's in and bitching and people are not treating his anecdotal claims with reasonable suspicion. No, they jump right in and they are "amazed."

There's horse shit, and then there's horse shit, and I'm here to tell you- that's horse shit. Come on.

I'd email him a link to this thread (an actual thread, and not some face-saving fantasy) but then, that would just get him started again. Besides, I imagine he's already seen it.

Ain't that right, redacted?

It didn't happen. The significant thing about his claim is that he thinks that any reasonably intelligent person would buy it.
