Thanks. I find it facinating to watch the groups tighten up as the charge moves along. I think I might not mess anymore with that. Still debating whether to load up past where I ended at 42.2. No pressure signs of any kind, but Berger book says MAX is 41.6. Much further will most likely be a compressed load as well.

After depriming the faulty cases and looking at things under a magnifying glass, i agree with the weak primer theory. The bolt face did end up with a pock mark on the face. From what I have read on it...no big deal.

Deprimed and full length sized, bumped shoulders back .002, polished, trimmed, polished again, and finally annealed the twice fired cases I have. A small batch of that lot have been prepped as described and fired for the third time already. Ready for cleaning and a 4th loading. So far so good. I got another box working on the first firing, and one more yet unopened.

Do some loading tonight if I feel up to it. Still fighting whatever bug I got...

Took delivery of, and installed a new Redding Big Boss II press. I'm pretty sure that thing will survive a nuclear holocaust. Big Grin

Loaded up some rounds for a OCW test for the new 215's. Out to the range in the morning to see how they shoot.

Yep, I love making OCW runs. Visible results. I almost would rather work up loads than shoot. Not many things give this sort of satisfaction these days.

Indeed, developing a load is really the only time I shoot paper anymore. Once the development is over it is on to the steel. I find it so much more fun. If is gets too easy just make the target smaller. I'm a hit or miss kind of guy, no need for a ruler here Big Grin

OCW testing at the range went well today. Have settled on 73.2 grains of H1000 in RWS brass under the Berger 215 grain hybrid. Shoots very well and still manages a comfortable 2900 fps. Next node was showing pressure and I don't want to abuse this brass. Now I need to load up some more and see what kind of ES I'm getting.

Prepped 150 rounds of .308 brass this weekend, will hopefully get time to drop powder and seat bullets sometime this week so I can hit the 1000-yard range this weekend. Nothing exotic, just some 175 SMK loads using 8208 XBR. Just enough velocity out of my 22" barrel to get me to 1K yards which is all I need out of this rifle. Cool

What kind of velocity are you seeing with the powder, bullet, and barrel combo?

I've thought about trying that powder, but haven't yet found any on the local shelves.

Thanks,

RMD

Sorry, I haven't checked this thread in a while and missed this one. I have some Varget but not enough so since the 8208 XBR was plentiful near me I gave it a try. So far I really like it. I'm getting 2650 FPS average using the recipe below. Standard deviation of 6-9 FPS on velocity as I check batches with my Magnetospeed.

Tikka T3 Varmint .308, factory CHF barrel, 1-11" twist, cut to 22" length

Federal match brass
CCI #200 primer
42.5 grains 8208 XBR
175 SMK
COAL: 2.8712" (2.2900" measured at the ogive)
This puts me -.010" off the lands

According to IMR 42.5 grains is the max book load, and they list 2664 FPS out of a 24" barrel. No signs of pressure at 42.5 grains and it had the best accuracy as I worked up to it. Still feeds perfectly from AICS mags and plenty of room left in the case for more powder if I wanted to up the velocity a hair.

Right now it's enough to get me to 1050 yards without going transonic under my normal conditions, so I plan to shoot this load until I consume my box of 175 SMK bullets. Then I'm going to start testing some Berger 168 hybrids which will save me a couple MOA of wind drift at 1K yards and should get me to ~1200 yards before going transonic.

Thanks for the info.

I will try to find some and work up a load or tow.

Primed a butt-load of 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP cases, the bulk of it being 9mm.

Good setup and probably one tenth the price they get for a factory thru Pyramid air.
I went with an additional air tank for my gun.

Chrono'd the 6.5. Now that it has 499 rounds down the pipe, I figure it's fully broken in. It did speed up some, too.

A 25-shot string got me an average of 2794, ES of 25, SD of 6.3.

That's a 50fps increase over the chrono work immediately following load development.

Ran off a quick 100 45 ACP to round out my match stash and prepped 24 308 cases to load some training rounds later. Slow day here.

After a bit of a hiatus, got back to the bench.

I had 8lbs of Varget that were 6 of one lot and 2 of another. Played mad scientist and mixed them all together and filled the pound jugs back up.

Loaded up a quantity of Berger 185gr Juggernauts, and 175gr SMKs. Also loaded up one more OCW test run looking for a higher node using Varget and both the Bergers and Sierras. Hoping this will be the last OCW for a while.

Hopefully get to the range in about a week to 10 days.

After over two years of "drought", found Win 231 on the shelf at a local outfitter today, they had both 4# and 8# in stock. Following test loads with many alternative powders the past year or so, returned tonight to 231 for standard powder for 9mm. Did get good results with Ramshot True Blue, Vectan Ba9, BE 86, Win SF, Power Pistol and Unique along the way. Good to have choices.

Bought everything I need for reloading 223 and 308 on one of my Dillon presses. Redding competition seater die, lee factory crimp die, and Redding size decapping die for each caliber. Now I need to find a good sale on bullets, and order a Giraud Case trimmer. Might as well do it in style.

I could always have bought a boat. Wait I have one of those as well.
