I would think live albums and best of albums to be cheating in this context. It's too easy to pull out your best hits and play them live.

Exception to that rule, and one that hits me deeper in my souls than anything listed so far (and there some good ones): Band of Gypsys. I think Machine Gun was divinely inspired, and easily one of the most amazing guitar performances ever.

But it's that an album or performance? I would think performances would be a different discussion as there's a ton of God like performances of trash albums when performed live. Metallica and Rush constantly one upped themselves whenever they went on tour.

Aside from what is already posted, and several Metallica releases, the following come to mind first for me:

Guns 'n Roses "Appetite for Destruction"
Iron Maiden "Powerslave"

Meatloaf - Bat Out Of Hell

It's the 4th best selling album of all time for a reason. It has it all.

Others that I think meet the OP's criteria:

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, and Division Bell

Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac (Rumours too, but I like their first one better)

U2 - Achtung Baby

Many of these I agree with, especially Mindcrime. I’ll add:
Beastie Boys - License to Ill
Pearl Jam - Vs
Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - Moanin’

Yes, I have a wide variety of tastes.

The original 'The Doors' album. It had been remastered a couple of times but it's the original release that I have and like.

Forgot that one, solidly agree.
Always see different ways to list bands and albums or authors and titles etc. in these threads, what is the most grammatically correct? Just curious.

Great choice. An album so good that they didn’t have enough room and had to cut ‘Silver Springs’, which is an excellent song.
