Nice to see both Bottas and Hulkenburg doing well.
I'd guess that the new hires for the soon to be Audi team have been trying a few developments at the end of the season, but the grid is so tight now that a few tenths improvement can move them, and did, halfway up the grid.
Pretty wild ride on Max's first Q3 run.
Leclerc could be fun to watch tomorrow. Since they have to start last anyway, some setup changes and starting on hard tires and hoping for a timely yellow is their only real option.

I saw 206 on Bottas' speed trace on the back straight. Most of the frontrunners were around 203mph.
Where's this car been all season?!? Hopefully he can pick up a point or two tomorrow & close the season on a high.
Still no confirmation on his '25 plans. Playing it close to the chest.

Well ESPN has done it again. I scheduled the DVR but no race or pre-race aired at the alloted time. Mad, at least according to the now changed programming guide. Mad Mad The pre-race was, in fact, airing when I checked 15 minutes before race time, but the race did not air. I didn't think to check if it was being recorded, why would I? Because, you know, ESPN Mad Mad Replay claimed to be shown at 10PM CST, we'll see.

What ESPN channel did you have the recording setup for? I think the race was originally supposed to be on ESPN 2, but it got changed to ESPN yesterday or Friday. My TiVo picked up the change and recorded it correctly.

F1TV (maybe SKY too) is far better coverage than ESPN and no recording necessary.
No satellite or cable either, just an internet connection.

Mine got it fine on YouTubeTV.

I'm also reminded of this very valuable quote from Ron Dennis:

Haven't watched yet, but 100% this.
I held out for a while in hopes a native Samsung TV app would come.
Ended up using an old Roku we had

In surprising news:

Verstappen apologizes to Piastri for Abu Dhabi clash

Chris Medland December 8, 2024 12:09 PM ET

Max Verstappen says it was was important for him to apologize to Oscar Piastri for hitting him at Turn 1 at the start of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, even if he didn’t agree with his subsequent penalty for it.

The Dutchman got a good start and had already overtaken Carlos Sainz when he attempted a move down the inside of Piastri under braking for the first corner. Verstappen took to the inside curb but was never fully alongside and tapped Piastri into a spin — also pirouetting 360 degrees himself — to put the McLaren driver to the back of the field.

“Launch was good and then I tried to grab the inside, and I quickly realized, once I committed to it, that the gap was closing and I wanted to try and get out of it, because I didn’t want to cause a crash with Oscar,” Verstappen said. “Unfortunately we still clipped each other, but I already apologized to Oscar. It’s not what you want to happen and especially not with him — he’s a great guy. It happened. It’s just a bit unfortunate.”

Verstappen was given a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision, one of a multiple handed out for the same infringement during the race, but suggested he was unhappy at the punishment.

“Honestly, I don’t want to talk about it. I’m just happy that the season is over,” he said. “For me, the most important thing that I had to do is just apologize to Oscar, because I have nothing to gain, nothing to lose. I went for it. It didn’t work out. And especially also for him that we both spun. It’s not nice — he’s a friend of mine, so I don’t want to have any, like, weird feelings or whatever, going into the break.

“I don’t understand anything [about penalties] anymore, but it’s fine, whatever. I’m not gonna get angry about stuff like that. It’s not worth my time. Just have a break. Like I said, the most important thing is that I apologize to Oscar, and that’s it.

“I think when you’re in that position, you’re focusing on the car ahead, you commit. How I feel it as well … when you start first or second, you never really looked behind. So I went for it, and then I realized, ’S***, he doesn’t see me there.’ So I was trying to get out of it, but then we still clipped. Of course, that is on me, but I was expecting maybe 20 seconds, 30 seconds, I don’t know, stop-and-go? It’s maybe something to talk about for next time.”

I thought that Verstappen's move was BS, and his penalty, if anything I would have wanted to be stronger, though by the rules the penalty was appropriate.

While Max took the blame for the incident, the least he could do, he then blamed the officials for giving him the now standard penalty.
He then made statements about the officials that were less than complimentary. I was surprised the FIA hasn't reacted to that by now.

So umm, what do we do until March?

I'm going to miss Valtteri Bottas.

Is Lawson going to take Checo's spot? What's up with the rumors that Red Bull doesn't like Yuki?

I'm a VB fan, so I'll miss him on the grid as well. He says he's not done, but the options aren't really there for 2025. Lots of channels supporting him taking one of the Cadillac [Andretti] seats in 26.
Was bummed to see his AD race go so poorly after a pretty monster quali effort. Unlucky with Perez & way outbraked himself into KMag.

As for the off-season. I'm midway in 2001, so I've got plenty to hold me over until winter testing/silly off-season rumors.

RBR is in a tough spot. Perez really isn't cutting it, and I don't really think Lawson nor Yuki are ready for the 'big boy' seat.
Saw a few rumors of VB taking the Perez spot, but don't really see that happening either. Would be interesting to see what he could do when hback in a front-running car.

February {well, barely.....}!!!

The best solution is WRC. I bought a subscription to their app and have LOVED being able to watch all of each stage. Can skip over the WRC2 cars at the end unless compelling, and can watch on demand. I'm only now about to start the final round at Japan which ran a couple weeks ago. With so little media coverage I really don't have any idea what went on there.

Also, the app has VERY many prior seasons in total, or various highlights and features from different seasons, rallies or drivers of note. It's been the best ~$120/yr I've spent on entertainment in a long time.

Also, their first rally is 1/23, followed by my favorite round in Sweden 2/13. 14 rounds total sprinkled in through the end of November.

So for me, holidays and college bowl season, followed by a weekend of chores, and right back into it!

It looks like Sainz could be going to Mercedes and Antonelli will go to Williams…

If so, Sainz could give ol’ George a run for the top seat.

I believe F1 has more reporters that just make shit up for clicks than any other sport, save possibly soccer which I stay far away from.

And then there are the real idiots like Eddie Jordan, Ralf Schumacher, Jaques, etc.

Verstappen is a little bitch. He's a whiner, too, which is even worse.

Prior to Sainz signing for Williams, I'd seen similar reports of Bottas going back to Mercedes to give Antonelli a year at Williams to get his feet wet.
Not an unrealistic scenario & Williams/Mercedes do play well together, see Russell subbing in for Lewis in Bahrain.

That's just baseless click bait.

Mercedes had a chance to sign Sainz early on and declined to meet his conditions, because he wanted a multiyear contract...he's not looking for a 1 year placeholder

I don't remember which ESPN I recorded. I look at the program guide, pick the show and set up record based on what's listed in the schedule.

An ok race at best, the highlight --

VCARB pit wall -"Stay out"
Yuki - "Why.."
