Virginia owns the ABC stores, so they sell at retail generally speaking. I paid $79.99 plus tax for the 15, the 12 was going for $59.99. While that's good for me, it creates artificial demand as flippers, out of state buyers and even out of state package stores enter the fray. In my line was a guy who had driven down from MD as well as a Virginia ABC employee not allowed to buy it at his own store. You should have seen the MD guys expression when I pulled his leg a little and told him they required a VA driver's license to buy it in VA.

My 15 found a younger friend.

I have not, but I'll keep an eye out. Missed out on the 4 Roses Small Batch LE and the Birthday Bourbon. But, I'm happy with Pappy.

I tried straight edge and came to the realization that I like my Bourbon to taste like Bourbon. I am not a fan of whiskey being finished in other types of barrels to add flavors. Good whiskey has plenty of complexity on its own.

Deqlyn, I had never heard of Straight Edge or Slaughter House, but I am a fan of Orin Swift wines, particularly The Prisoner and Papillon. Like Gator, I've been less than impressed with the "finished" bourbons I've tried, but would have to give these a try based on who's producing them, the fact they're going in cabernet barrels, the price point, and the initial reviews.

Aside from the fact they produced only about 4000 bottles for worldwide distribution, Stagg is 5 years wait listed in VA. I could see stores getting it on the website when it hit their inventory, but it was already promised to folks who got on the list 5 years ago. If the folks moved, died, etc., it supposedly went back to ABC for re-allocation to the next in line on the list. I doubt that actually happened.

Virginia finished their Pappy distribution this week. They couldn't sell the 10 YO Old Rip because there was no bar code on the labels, so they got that straightened out and I managed 2 bottles of that yesterday. This morning, a smaller store that only gets a truck bi-weekly got their allocation, so I was second in line at 7 AM and picked up a second bottle of the 12 YO. I was hoping for a second bottle of the 15, but that was pretty rare this year. I figure 5 total bottles of ORVW product is a pretty decent haul, especially for $300.00.

I agree, Bourbon (and Rye) doesn't need anything added, nor does it need to be more Scotch-like in presentation or process.

So I skip the Finished this and that / the flavored such and such, and stick to the basics... Bah humbug and all that...

Wow that's an impressive haul. Just out of curiosity do you like drinking Pappy? I can only drink one maybe two drinks (each with a very small amount of water) before I have to switch to a Bourbon (with high rye content) or Rye. I just find it to sweet. The 12 yr that I have is one of the best Bourbons I've ever had but after one I crave rye.

I could drink nothing but Pappy 15 and VW Rye, if it were reasonably possible, but it's not, thanks to flippers, hoarders, hipsters, TV shows, and regular old supply and demand.

I like sweet myself. It's what got me into bourbons in the first place. I find all bourbons whether wheat or rye based to be sweet, some more than others, being a former dedicated drinker of Scotch. Not sweet in a sickly candy way but pleasant. What I don't like now is too much alcohol like astringency or if I detect too much of a grain or cereal like flavor.

This! Drinking and really liking Blanton's now. The Macallan 18 ($240) and 25 ($1200) are now reserved exclusively for the times with the sons-in-law - new pricing forces decisions on funding grandkids' college funds or replacing great Single Malts. Big Grin

Ok ive tried 1792 port finished. I have to agree, my first barrel finished bottle. Great taste but the finish is pretty unbourbon. And for 40 bucks when the regular is selling for 26. Meh. Ill take the regular. Im hanging on to my original bottle too, i like it over the rebranding.

Damn nice haul on the pappy. If you feel like throwing a bone to someone whos never tried it let me know :-)

Hoping to get a bottle but kansas is waaay behind this year. Eagle rare 17 isnt even delivered yet. I did have some scotch come in direct from scotland, gifts for uncle and aunt. Knockando 12 yr. Shipping was 68 bucks!

I will admit blantons is hard to beat. For 55 bucks you know youre getting perfection everytime rather than trying some other bourbon that should be listed at 22 bucjs with no reputation.

I agree bourbons are all sweet to some extent, but wheat bourbons for me get sickly candy sweet after more than 2.

In other news Elijah Craig is having a holiday promotion where they will print you a label with a personal holiday greeting. They send you label you place on a bottle you purchased and when you give it as a gift it looks like it came from the factory.

I'm going to do an aging experiment or two next year. One with Weller 107 for sure, so I've been accumulating bottles for it, and beyond that I'm still thinking about what else I may do, as well as which barrels to use. what are you thinking of doing?

Ive been told you need a barrel strength bourbon, not sure if thats true. When i find out it will either be EC12 or barrel strength. I been looking at these barrels. Alot of other barrel reviews online say they leak but im just wondering if its operator error. There is a restaurant here called "Rye " that does this with all types of bourbon I may ask them. They just leave thiers in barrels by the door then and are offered on the menu.
