I still haven't read the book yet but I take this to mean that the 3rd installment doesn't follow the book - that it's more true to zendaya (?; I still don't know who she is; I've been meaning to look up why she seems popular but haven't had sufficient interest to do so) than to the original story.

Or perhaps #3 doesn't generally follow the book at all?

The changes they did to Chani in Part 1 and Part 2 weren't horrible, but lack a good reason to do it in the movies. There is no possible way in Dune Messiah that Chani would fall in with the antagonists other than casting a self absorbed, self righteous SoCal girl so Zendaya Coleman could play her from experience.

I'm also going to call it now that they're going to use the line from Paul in Part 2 about how Chani "will come around in the end" to redeem the the Zendaya twat who's more ghola than Duncan Idaho to absolve her of her actions.

I don't know the storyline so don't know what to expect but I thought that the fremen (including chani?) were good guys and that that Paul starts as a good guy but #2 suggested he becomes a bad guy? Again, not sure and planning to read the book soon ahead of #3 release.

The antagonists are the emperor and the ??? (I forgot who the bad guys were called in #1/2). So the preview suggests that Chani sides w/ the emperor / ??? ? I didn't really understand the preview. I couldn't even recognize Paul.

I don't get the Chani character role other than perhaps love interest / support for Paul. She doesn't seem like a leader, doesn't seem particularly competent or capable of anything special, doesn't seem to matter much. Perhaps she's more relevant in the book.

I just finished the McDevitt books and the Old Testament. Maybe I'll start Dune as I start the New Testament.

I never read Dune Messiah, so I don’t have any expectations with regard to whether it follows the book or not. I just hope it’s a good movie and holds my interest.

There are no real good guys in Dune. The Fremen are better than the Harkonens, but they are still a pretty savage group of extremists. The Atredis start out as probably the closest thing to good guys, but once they move to Arrakis and things play out as they do, Paul finds himself having to do some pretty shady things first to stay alive and then to steer humanity away from either stagnation or destruction. The scope of just how horrible some of these things are sets the stage for the 3rd and later books in the series.

God Emperor of Dune is where things get weird. At his worst Paul was a saint compared to what Leto II does in the name of putting humanity in the Golden Path.

I love the first book. I enjoyed the recent movies other than the absolute butchering of Chami as a character. I’ve got no interest in seeing Part 3.

In the Dune universe there's bad guys, and then not as bad guys. If you're lucky you're born on a planet like Caladan with the Atreides in power. For the most part you'd probably have a fairly comfortable life, maybe you're a fisherman, maybe you farm, maybe you're a laborer. You're born, you live, you have some kids, there's good times and bad, and eventually you die in your bed. Nice. It's still a feudal system though, and the Duke can rule his fiefs any way he sees fit, so long as the Emperor gets his cut.

Or maybe you're born on Geidi Prime with the Harkonnens, and you work in a toxic pit that will kill you before you're 40, being choked out by bleeding tumors. Or maybe you're raped by the Baron before he murders you at 15. The "good" ending is probably in the gladiator ring, being stabbed by another slave. Oh yeah, they have slaves too. At least they'll keep you fed, probably. Nobody likes a fight that's over too soon.

There's a thousand other Houses, major and minor, they all run pretty much between the Atreides and the Harkonnen in terms of "good guy/bad guy".

Lets not even get into the Bene Tleilax and their breeding tanks, just hey, you notice you never see one of their women?

Reading the books is a good idea...I read them back when I was in college and re-reading them before the current films does put a different spin on it.

Paul doesn't become the "bad guy", he just isn't brave enough to follow through with The Golden Path and defers it to his son

She plays a much more important role in the movies than in the books.

In the book, she was the love interest, but also critical to Paul's transformation.

In the movies, she serves as a reminder of Herbert's intent...from the original book, that lead him to write the second to correct folks mis-understanding the first

IMO the books jumped galaxies of sharks between books 2 and 3, so it is not - again IMO - necessarily a bad thing the movies and the books diverge.

If as the trailer says the third movie is to be the final one, that divergence would have to be the case anyway.

So I'm looking forward to catching the third movie when it comes out.

I didn't know before but it seems like I need to read Dune (movies #1, 2) as well as Dune Messiah (movie #3) ahead of its release.

I've started Dune.... Chapter 1 was good and sounded familiar. Chapter 2 not so much. Onward ho....

What was wrong with Children of Dune? I thought it was the best book outside of the first and a great stop for the series like Sci-Fi Channel did on their miniseries. Or are you thinking of God Emperor of Dune, and if so, I agree 100%. If you thought you hated "The Message" for the Modern Audience, imagine a gigantic worm/human preaching at you for almost 500 pages.

I get the feeling they may circle back to this towards the end, but once Paul became the Kwisatz Haderach (Shortening of the Way in Hebrew), he became trapped by prophecy. You could borrow the example of Doctor Strange in Avengers: Infinity War that he knows every permutation, but there is only one path (The Golden Path) that will keep humanity from stagnating into extinction. Except the "best ending" is horrific and will cause a lot of suffering for a lot of people including Paul and everyone he is close to. If he doesn't follow this path, it's much worse for all of humanity, and I'm predicting the self-righteous and self-absorbed Chani will figure this out at the end and Paul will forgive her because he already knew it was going to happen. "She'll come around in the end..."

You're right, I got the numbers wrong. The shark-jumping (again IMO) was between 3 and 4.
