No. No. Not even if streamed free. I'm putting my free money where my mouth is. Just say no.

Just got done reading it again. Pretty sure a movie is not going to do it justice.

Nolan chose to depict a realistic interpretation of Greek mythology and drew inspiration from the 2017 translation of the Odyssey by British-American classicist Emily Wilson.

Emily Wilson’ “translation” is feminist gobbledygook.

I have been a fan of Nolan since seeing his 2nd film Memento in the theaters, and having seen every single one after, from Insomnia to Oppenheimer, all in the first run theater release, most in IMAX. I saw his first, an indie film called Following on DVD. I will not see this one. The casting "decision" is egregiously DEI woke bullshit, just as bad as the Hamilton crap. Not a dime on theater tickets, streaming or disc.

I won't completely give up on Nolan, but he clearly sold out on a major casting decision and or is a big DEI fan himself.

I'll reserve final judgement and in the meantime hope this film falls flat on it's box office face. Whomever put money behind this will know why.

It's a movie, entertainment. Nolan has put out some fine examples, I'll reserve judgement on this one until I see it.

Question. That whole Ellen Page as Achilles seems like it might not be true. The girl playing Helen of Troy is true. The Ellen Page thing I don’t seem to be able to confirm. Anyone have the hard facts on this one?

Lots of conjecture, nothing solid. If anything, I've seen the possibility that Page is playing the ghost of Achilles; possibly in an emaciated, pathetic physical state from his time in Hades. After Achilles' death, as a ghost he implores the Greeks to sacrifice Polyxena (daughter of King Priam of Troy) to him in order to receive favorable winds for their voyage home.
We'll see...anything with Page in it, is bound to be a role that is a pitiful, introspective, emo-esque character.

The casting choices are disappointing to put it mildly. Hard pass for me.

Here is the latest "accurate" trailer. Looks great for AI; at this point, I'd rather watch a full length feature of this than Nolan's.

Entertainment is in the eye of the beholder, and we’re all entertained by different things.
Virtually anything based on history or even ancient fictional history will require some “willing suspension of disbelief,” but the less of that in any work, the more entertaining it is for me.

And the “It’s just entertainment” excuse has been around for as long as I remember, and demonstrates how limited some people’s perceptions can be. Long ago when I was a kid and very interested in the history of World War II, the Army officer technical advisor to one movie whose title I’ve long since forgotten, justified the inaccuracies by saying it wasn’t intended to be a technical training film. Despite his rationalized excuse, the entertainment value for me was greatly reduced by seeing no effort to make an M48 Patton tank look anything like a WWII German model except painting a Balkenkreuz on it.

On the other hand, the realistic depictions in Saving Private Ryan are the reason I have a CD copy. I don’t expect entertainment products to be perfect, but there are limits to what’s acceptable.

Letter to Nolan from Greeks

“ In discussions around The Odyssey, some have argued that mythology belongs to the world and should not be bound by cultural origin. Others see casting diversity as a reflection of the modern global audience rather than historical specificity.

We understand those perspectives. But universality does not require disconnection from origin.

A story can belong to humanity while still recognising the people and language from which it first emerged.”

“ Addendum: Given Hollywood's and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' rules and insistence for minority representation, authenticity and diversity, where are the Greeks, or the Greek Americans in this Greek story? The Odyssey Cast: Matt Damon (American – English, Finnish and Scottish ancestry), Tom Holland (English), Anne Hathaway (American – Irish, French and English ancestry), Zendaya (African-American, German and Scottish ancestry), Lupita Nyong'o (Kenyan-Mexican), Charlize Theron (South African – Afrikaner heritage), Robert Pattinson (English), Jon Bernthal (American – Jewish ancestry), John Leguizamo (Colombian-American), Benny Safdie (American – Syrian-Jewish ancestry), Himesh Patel (British – Indian Gujarati heritage), Jovan Adepo (Nigerian-American/British), Mia Goth (Brazilian-English heritage)”

“Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present Generation to preserve your Freedom! I hope you will make good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven, that I ever took half the Pains to preserve it.”
― John Adams
