Also, have you or anybody you know around you shot the 103 Vapor Trails (used to be Spencer) in BR or Dasher? I've seen those little SOB's do some crazy stuff at 1000. Spanked my 6.5x47 hind end.

There's a local guy with a 6 Dasher, a 6BR, and a 6.5x47. He regularly gets spanked by a guy with a 6.5x47 and a 6BRX.

The best his Dasher has done is second place, even losing to his own 6.5x47 on occasion. LOL

I like the 6.5x47 and it does well but I haven't been able to agg as small as the BR's and Dashers. Not saying it can't be done I just haven't been able to. I had a good day going last year with a 4.8 something group in not so good conditions and got spanked by a BR that shot less than 3". I did beat him in score though because he wasn't as centered. The BR and its derivatives are amazing little buggers. My next BR rig will be a dasher shooting Vapor trails.

When Beanland chambered my last 6x47 barrel, I also had him set back/re-chamber a dead 6x47 barrel in a Dasher. I'm shooting a local match with the 6x47 March 7th. After that match I pull off the the barrel and put on the Dasher barrel. A local Bench Rest shooter is going to give me 10 Dasher dummy rounds see if it will feed out of AW mags. For some reason can't get the dummy rounds, will FF some 6BR brass. Beanland has chambered a few Dasher repeaters on Defiance AW cut actions, report they feed like butter w/o mods to the AW mags. As much as like the 6x47, if I can get a Dasher to mag feed....oh my!

Don't know of anyone shooting the Vapor Trail 103's. I'll ask the BR guy when I get the Dasher rounds from him. He's the match director for 600/1000yd BR matches at the Colorado Rifle Club, guessing he'll know about the Vapor Trails.

Meplats look very consistent and tips are closed more than the VLD's. Hope to see how they shoot soon.

Thanks. Look forward to your range report. Going to start with 37.5 Varget?

A few weeks ago shot with a friend who just had a 6.5x47 chambered. He did his intial load work at a indoor 100yd range. 37.5/Varget Hybrids looked good. He brought a bunch of that load loaded long and his press/seating die. I believe he started .010 in. .035 jumped hammered in his rifle, easy 1/2" at 220yds. Fun to see his groups snap into place, well worth his effort. 2770/24" Chanlynn barrel.

Yes I'll start with 37.5 Varget. Will load them all at a little jam and take my K&M press and Wilson seater to the range.

Your buddy is certainly pushing those 140 hybrids hard for 6.5x47. Awesome they're shooting good in his gun. I think I'm going to reserve my stash of those for 6.5 SAUM where I can push over 3200 if needed and stick with 130's on the '47.

Shot the 420 club shoot again today.

Better than last week, with a 3.156" group. Not even close to the money. Winner was a 260 at 1.1xx, second was a 6 dasher with 1.3xx, third was a 260 at 1.9xx.

I certainly wasn't the worst though. One guy put up a 13.6xx group!

Big day for me today, I beat one of my long-time rivals for the first time. He also shoots a 308, and put up a 3.5xx group.

Also, spent some time on the spotting scope today. Saw vapor trails for the first time. Very cool.

I'll post a pic of my target later, just sitting down to eat. My issue was all vertical. Held about an inch in the windage.

Yeah, trace is cool. In my neck of the woods the atmospheric conditions don't always let us see trace, unless you have some uber clear and expensive spotting scopes. I suspect the (generally) dry air is part of the issue.

Just wait until you start seeing your own trace, from your rifle scope. I was blown away the first time. Conditions have to be just right (chilly and damp around here) and your technique has to be spot on -- i.e. no movement of the reticle after the shot.

But it's so cool seeing your bullets arc gracefully towards the target, seeing both the drop and windage. On one memorable day I was calling hits and misses on 600 yard steel before my spotter could, sometimes even before the bullet hit the steel. I wish all days were like that.

Nice spotting scopes give you super nice trace ... I remember being at a shoot where one of the people was a TV show host and had all her gear "supplied" by advertisers.

I got paired up during class and was her spotting partner one day, and did the scope make a difference (Swarovski).

Vapor trails all day long. Arc, trajectory, spin drift, everything clear as can be. Sure does make corrections a lot simplier.

There were two spotting scopes available, I checked them both out. A middle-of-the-road Leopold that was purchased used for $350 (no idea the model), and a vortex HD model with a street price of about 1500.

Both showed trace, but the vortex was much more clear when the magnification was dialed up.

For anyone wanting to see trace, the most recent Shooting Gallery with Michael Baine was at FTW Ranch in Hill Country TX, taking a long range hunting class.

They have about 7-8 shots of trace (mid-show) that you can see on TV.

Not the best trace (and not calling shots/or corrections as you would in a team), but still gives you some sense if you've never seen it. The camera angle also distorts your perspective a little, but nevertheless a fine show with good examples.

Did some testing with the 130 hybrids today. All were at 37.5 Varget. They did ok for no charge weight test with only changing length. Nothing really to get excited about though just yet. Tested .005 jam, touch, .005 jump,.01 jump, .015,.02,and .03. .005 jam shot ok. From touch to .01 jump shot about the same. Jumping more than that opened up more. Did a control group with 130 VLD's to make sure the gun was shooting good. Had around 250 rounds down it since cleaning. I'm going to save any further testing with these with the Manners/Atlas gun when I get everything done for it.

Setup

Control

.01 jump

Interesting finding there, jelrod.

Hey, you should take to 280 and Jeff yarchin. Maybe a road trip for all 3 of you to come up for the Wisconsin sigforum shoot and food fest? Thread is in the regional subforum. Saturday may 2nd.

Finally had a chance to sit down and install the pistol grip AI skins on my rifle. I have to say I'm very happy with the fit and feel of these skins.

So no fitment issues like the viperskins, I presume?

Not in the near term or at least not yet. It's time to get it out shooting and see how I like this first. Have plans to take this one on a road trip in April. Going to see just how far I can stretch this rifle's legs. I won't make any final decisions till I've spent some time behind it.

The JAE is definitely on my radar though. If not this perhaps the next bolt project Wink

Pardon me if this has been answered, as I'm not really trying to look through 40+ pages of this thread, but do any of you have recommendations for a portable anemometer (wind gauge)? Budget is maybe a couple hundred bucks.

I have a Kestrel something or other. I rarely use it, but I have one. It works just fine and that's probably the most popular brand of wind meters.

That's OK, the long action at third Gen is gone now.

But, they do have three short action swat black, and a short action OD if anyone is interested...

You should also bring that rifle to the may shoot!
