Inforce WML, Haley Stratigic D3 Sling Being practical taking into account everything. P320 Carry 21 round mags, 17 round spares, Aimpoint Acro P2, Surefires Would allow Glocks 9mms if folks wanted to buy their own. P365s allowed for plain clothes. FN 15 Tac3 Duty ARs, Inforce WML, Haley D3 Slings This would be for the entire agency. I would not carry what everyone else couldn’t.This message has been edited. Not a revolver, and not a 1911. Capacity being the biggest factor along with weight. Glock 19 or 17. Sig P226 or P320. If considering back up guns, I'd go simple with one of the S&W 38sp snub nose. 637 et al. Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. I really like Staccato but I would carry a Glock 45 with direct slide cut for Holosun 509T green and streamlight TLR-7A. Also, every pistol would have the Johnny Glock's Convex trigger shoe with combat trigger bar. Nothing too fancy. Just a workhorse. | |||

While it might be tempting to indulge in the privilege of the position and carry something retro cool like a Python or flashy 1911, I think I would carry whatever the department required the deputies to carry. | |||

I think this is a given. But this is the internet and we are playing a game here. Personally, If I were Sheriff of my own county, Broadside County, I think I would carry either a Sig P226 .40cal (no rail) or a Sig P232 SL depending on whether I planned to be in the field or in the office on any given day. Edit: I would also reserve the option to carry a Smith & Wesson Model 60 (no lock) and a Smith & Wesson Model 66 with 6" barrel. | |||

Do uniformed and non uniformed police carry the same gun? While the general sentiment of being a leader first I agree with, carrying a “special” gun as Sheriff is largely ceremonial. Was Patton a dick or poor leader for carrying pearl handled Colts? Are you going to say no to the parking spot reserved in front too? Carry something nice. Don’t use department funds to buy it. If anybody cares they would just find something to annoy themselves so don’t worry about it. | |||

Oftentimes no. Sometimes it's a matter of different sizes of the same platform (like patrol officers carry a G17 or G34 while detectives and admins carry a G19 or G26). Sometimes there's even greater flexibility than that for the non-uniformed officers and administrators. Heck, think back to the ubiquitous Chief's Special starting back in the 1950s. The "real cops" carried full sized 6-shot revolvers with longer barrels, while the administrators had a smaller 5-shot one with a stubby barrel. | |||

Based on this, what came to my mind first is the Wilson Combat EDC X9. Pricey, but a double stack 9mm 1911, 18 rd capacity, 4" barrel. I have the 5" barrel version the X9L and it is an excellent handgun. For something with or without an optic, a Staccato C2 would be a great substitute, a 2011 with a 3.9" barrel, 17 rd capacity. and lower price than the Wilson. I like the way you think. That’s definitely an excellent option worthy of consideration. As for policy, I’m not sure what the current policy is but I would definitely be in favor of allowing deputies to carry from an approved list of personally owned weapons as long as certain conditions were met. I think requiring pistols to remain within certain parameters (no 2 pound triggers, for example), pass an occasional inspection for condition and operation, and require higher qualification scores than standard would all be reasonable requests and something I would happily live by myself. I also very much like the idea of allowing personally owned long guns, especially those with optics. I like to think that I would (and hopefully will) be the type of administrator that people like to work for. This is a fun exercise, let’s keep people’s thoughts coming. I remember growing up in the 80’s that I used to love watching Spenser for Hire with my granfather' and I still watch the old shows. Perhaps I can have a 8” polished chrome Python day like Hawk carried, or every once in a while carry one of my much loved Beretta 92s in a shoulder holster like Spenser carried? “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.
