Trump Announces Extension of Iran Ceasefire

The U.S. naval blockade of the country’s ports will continue, the president says.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced he is extending a ceasefire with Iran, citing what he said are fractures in the Iranian regime, while he said a U.S. military blockade of the country will continue.

“Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so and, upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

Trump added he told the U.S. military to extend its more than one-week-long naval blockade of Iranian ports and “in all other respects, remain ready and able.”

The president “will therefore extend the Ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other,” he wrote.

This is a breaking news story. More details will follow.

We're sneaking up on that 90 day War Powers window. If he's going to finish this he needs to finish it now because Congress will never approve of further hostilities.

Good point, but do you believe they would want to take the blame for whatever wasn’t accomplished? Trump hatred really does make some people totally unhinged, but I could see pros and cons from the Democrats’ standpoint to ending our efforts. Whatever else can be said about them, they are not all box-o’-rocks stupid. Would killing the benefits to the Republicans be worth it to take some heat for ending it unfinished (to whatever degree)?

Discussion?

I didn’t recall, so I searched online whether the Supreme Court has ever ruled on the constitutionality of the War Powers Act, and according to what I found, it hasn’t. I can see arguments both ways, but if anyone was going to push a case to force a ruling, I believe it would be our current President. The possible outcome of such a ruling might make some of our Leftists’ blood run a little cool.

I wouldn't put it past some of the left (can you say BHO) to push that information to the Iranian negotiators to keep stalling until the 90 days is up and that they'll Neuter the whole thing.

And keep it up to the midterms to derail the R hold on congress, Chinese are probably pushing that narrative too, if Trump can't get this done soon Iran could end up being a Waterloo moment...

As good as a negotiator he is, this involves a lot of parties, Iran isn't the only group interested in a US political intervention strategy to push back on MAGA/Trump.

i found live hosted streaming video from the streets in Iran with the source saying the video was coming in via Starlink. the host is saying these gatherings are all over Iran, this one in particular in Tahran, and that some IRGC or Police are simultaneously retreating, and attacking, highly fluid. So I'm guessing the citizens of Iran are starting a revolution in real time.

People are blocking roads preventing IRGC movement, and saying things and waving flags that would otherwise get them drt. Saying to bring back the prince, etc.

As far as I can tell the civilians have no arms. I guess the worse the conditions get the more determined the citizens will become.

He just went offline. It was Tousi TV Live. I don't know anything about him except he's an US Iranian, involved in media, seems to strongly support the USA, and excited to see the people rising up. His family lives there and he's not been able to contact them for some time. At least it seems like a good guy in the short few hours I've been listening so far.

Surprised that Musk hasn't positioned Starlink Sat's over Iran and provided free internet access, or maybe he has and I've missed it.

That would put a big dent in the IRG's ability to silence any form of information or speech they don't like, and for us to feed in to the population of Iran the facts on what's going on.

Maybe he has and I've missed it..

^^^^^^^ From Google's AI:

Yes, Iranian authorities have actively blocked and jammed Starlink satellite internet services to combat its use as a communication lifeline during internet shutdowns. The regime employs sophisticated, potentially foreign-supplied radio-frequency jamming, GPS spoofing, and has criminalized the possession of terminals, with reports of up to 40,000 connections being cut.

Jamming and Interference: Iranian forces use "military-grade jamming" to disrupt signals, causing significant packet loss for users, say reports by IranWire.

Seizures and Penalties: The possession or trade of Starlink terminals has been severely cracked down on, with reports indicating penalties could be severe.

Operational Challenges: Despite jamming, Starlink has been used as a vital tool during severe, near-total nationwide internet blackouts (like that reported by NetBlocks).

High Costs & Risks: Due to the ban, terminals are heavily priced on the black market, sometimes exceeding $5,000, according to DW.com.

Government Action: Iranian authorities have actively targeted, confiscated, and disrupted these devices, describing them as tools of "US-Israeli operations," noted WIRED Middle East.

While the government has had success restricting the service, it remains a contested space in Iran's tight control of information.

Iran is claiming to have taken 2 ships now.
And have fired on several others.
Why are those attack boats not flaming oil slicks yet?
Surely we have helicopters that can intercept them.

Iran Attacks, Seizes 2 Container Ships After Trump Extends Ceasefire

Shipping came under Iranian fire in the Strait of Hormuz region after the United States prolonged a truce while maintaining maritime pressure on Tehran.

Iranian forces fired on two commercial vessels near the Strait of Hormuz on April 22, UK maritime authorities said, hours after U.S. President Donald Trump announced an extension of a fragile ceasefire with Tehran.

UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said in an April 22 incident report that a container ship was attacked by an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) gunboat about 15 nautical miles northeast of Oman, causing “heavy damage” to the vessel’s bridge. The crew was reported safe, with no fires or environmental impact.

In a separate incident, another cargo vessel was fired upon about 8 nautical miles west of Iran and forced to stop, UKMTO said. No damage or injuries were reported.

Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency, in a post on X, described the first incident as an enforcement action against a ship that had ignored warnings, characterizing the attack as part of Tehran’s maritime control measures in the region.

Tasnim later reported that the IRGC had seized two vessels—MSC Francesca and Epaminondas—and escorted them to Iranian shores, marking the first time Iran had seized ships since the start of the war.

The two vessels were confirmed as “seized” by maritime traffic monitoring service TankerTrackers, which said in a post on X that a third ship—the Euphoria—also came under fire on Wednesday and may also have been seized.
Trump Extends Ceasefire, Keeps Blockade

The incidents came after Trump said Washington would extend its ceasefire with Iran, which had been due to expire on April 22, citing mediation efforts by Pakistan and internal divisions within Iran’s leadership.

He also said that the United States would continue enforcing a naval blockade targeting Iranian-linked shipping, describing Iran’s government as “seriously fractured” and unable to produce a “unified proposal” in response to U.S. demands. These demands include Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz and relinquishing its stockpile of enriched uranium, part of the Trump administration’s effort to prevent Tehran from ever acquiring nuclear weapons.

Last week, the United States imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports, part of what officials described as a broader effort to disrupt Tehran’s oil exports and supply networks that bolster the regime’s fighting capacity amid the ongoing war.

U.S. forces have conducted several interdictions of vessels suspected of carrying sanctioned Iranian cargo.
U.S. Central Command said in an April 21 post on X that 28 vessels have been ordered to turn around or return to port since the blockade began.

Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said last week that the blockade would extend beyond Iranian waters, with U.S. forces in other theaters such as the Pacific poised to “pursue any Iranian-flagged vessel or any vessel attempting to provide material support to Iran,” with the intensified enforcement seeking to further quash Iran’s ability to wage war.
Iran Denounces Blockade, Threatens Retaliation

Iran has condemned the U.S. blockade as a violation of the truce and an act of war, while warning of retaliation.

“Blockading Iranian ports is an act of war and thus a violation of the ceasefire,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in an April 21 post on X. He also criticized a recent move by U.S. forces to fire at an Iran-flagged ship’s engine room and seize it during its enforcement of the naval blockade.
“Striking a commercial vessel and taking its crew hostage is an even greater violation,” Araghchi added. “Iran knows how to neutralize restrictions, how to defend its interests, and how to resist bullying.”

The IRGC has also warned that it is prepared to respond forcefully to any renewed hostilities.

Diplomatic efforts to settle the conflict have hit a roadblock, with Iran’s U.N. ambassador telling Iran’s state-run Tasnim News Agency that Tehran is prepared to resume negotiations with the United States only after Washington ends its naval blockade.

Iran has also argued that, under maritime law, the narrow geography of the Strait of Hormuz—less than 24 nautical miles across at its narrowest point—places much of the waterway within overlapping territorial seas of Iran and Oman, bolstering Tehran’s claim to impose navigation rules, including tolls.

The United States and various other nations have called for freedom of navigation through the strait, through which around one-fifth of global seaborne oil and gas normally transit.
