Way back in 1982 when Argentina occupied the Falkland Islands, the USA provided satellite intelligence to the British so they could plan their operations to retake the Islands.

Margaret Thatcher returned the favor when Reagan asked for use of British airbases for the strike on Libya after various attacks on US military personnel, most notably the attack in Berlin.

Even though there’s been a change of government and leadership in Argentina under Milei, that doesn’t mean there’s still not a desire to get those Islands.

The Royal Navy is no where near what it was in 1982. Their 2 aircraft carriers are plagued with maintenance issues and are stuck in port. Their destroyers and frigates also are less than fully mission capable. They are short aircraft, other equipment, and personnel.

So, what happens “if” the Falkland Islands spin up again into a crisis situation? Britain can’t do much about it then. Trump will tell the Brits to “eat haggis” and blow bagpipes.

And use "ski-jump" launching so the plane can't even take off with a full fuel and weapons load. Sad for the country that basically invented the carrier.

And pay no mind to those who live in the Falklands and have voted time after time to not become part of Argentina.

WRT the Royal Navy being unprepared, I suspect the Argentinian Military is no more ready for an engagement on the modern battlefield or open sea (given their economic woes over the past few decades).

‘Deep Penetrator’: U.S. Strikes Iranian Missile Sites Threatening Oil Ships in Strait of Hormuz With Bunker Busters

The United States has used a new bunker-buster deep penetration bomb for the first time, it said, announcing a strike against Iranian missile sites that threaten international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated overnight that strikes against “hardened Iranian missile sites” had “successfully employed” multiple 5,000 pound “deep penetrator munitions”. It was separately confirmed these were GBU-72s, a modernised guided bomb designed to penetrate through several yards of reinforced concrete before exploding, to take out hardened bunkers and shelters.

Exactly how deep underground the new bomb can be effective has never been made public by the United States. Military aviation special interest publication The Aviationist states the attack overnight is the first time this new munition is known to have been used in combat.

CENTOM said the strikes were “along Iran’s coastline near the Strait of Hormuz” and the Iranian missiles stationed in this area “posed a risk to international shipping in the strait”.

Being able to theoretically shut the Straits of Hormuz on command and without reasonable hope of being challenged, choking an important global route for crude oil, has long been one of Iran’s key areas of leverage. There are several layers to the weapons Iran can bring to bear to close the Strait, and anti-ship missiles (AShMs) are a potent part of this mix.

Typically carried on mobile launchers which theoretically add a level of security to Iran’s network by being able to rapidly disperse and constantly move the arsenal, Iran’s AShMs are a mix of indigenous and Chinese designs and in both cases often trace their origins to Cold War-era Russian designs. Because the straits are so narrow and well hidden launchers can strike at passing ships with so little warning, taking out the launchers is an essential step for the United States keeping Hormuz open to international traffic.

Other parts of Iran’s mix of capabilities to deny the Straits were its conventional navy and air force — both already close to completely destroyed by the U.S. and Israel, it’s ‘Mosquito Fleet’ of small suicide boats both manned and unmanned, and sea mines. The risk of Iran mining the waters has become a major flashpoint between the British and American governments, given for decades mine hunting in the Gulf was a key British contribution to global maritime security.

Yet Britain’s final minesweepers left the Gulf after decades of continuous deployment and work just weeks ago, and the left-wing government of Sir Keir Starmer has absolutely refused to send them back, at least until a ceasefire has been agreed in the region.

President Trump evidently feels extremely let down by Starmer’s insult, given how clearly the refusal contrasts with the UK’s position as America’s premier ally and partner in minesweeping in particular.

U.S. President Donald Trump:

"Israel, out of anger for what has taken place in the Middle East, has violently lashed out at a major facility known as South Pars Gas Field in Iran. A relatively small section of the whole has been hit. The United States knew nothing about this particular attack, and the country of Qatar was in no way, shape, or form, involved with it, nor did it have any idea that it was going to happen. Unfortunately, Iran did not know this, or any of the pertinent facts pertaining to the South Pars attack, and unjustifiably and unfairly attacked a portion of Qatar’s LNG Gas facility. NO MORE ATTACKS WILL BE MADE BY ISRAEL pertaining to this extremely important and valuable South Pars Field unless Iran unwisely decides to attack a very innocent, in this case, Qatar - In which instance the United States of America, with or without the help or consent of Israel, will massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars Gas Field at an amount of strength and power that Iran has never seen or witnessed before. I do not want to authorize this level of violence and destruction because of the long term implications that it will have on the future of Iran, but if Qatar’s LNG is again attacked, I will not hesitate to do so."

Critics will be eating crow when the IRGC falls and a Western-friendly democracy takes hold. That may still be weeks out but at this point Iran has no drones left, no military to speak of, but plenty of empty threats.

No, they'll just move onto the next Orange Man Bad talking point. The left never ever admits they were wrong nor that Trump ever did anything right.

I assume most of the chatter against the Iran action is from liars and propagandists, but I sure do see some regular folks bitching that it took more than 20 minutes to complete the job. And paying another $1/gal at the pump for a few weeks or even a few months is the end of the world. Memories are short, ignorance is rampant, and modern pop culture has created an expectation of instant results.

European Countries and Japan to Help Secure Strait of Hormuz to Stabilize Energy Markets

European and Japanese leaders condemned Iranian attacks, warning of global energy disruption and pledging support to keep the vital Hormuz shipping route open.

Britain, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Japan said on March 19 that they are prepared to help ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping lane blocked by Iran that U.S. President Donald Trump has asked allies to assist with opening.

In a joint statement, the countries condemned Iranian attacks on commercial vessels and energy infrastructure, as well as the effective closure of the key shipping route, and called on Tehran to immediately halt its actions.

They said disruption to global energy supplies posed a threat to international peace and security and that freedom of navigation must be upheld under international law.

“We express our deep concern about the escalating conflict. We call on Iran to cease immediately its threats, laying of mines, drone and missile attacks and other attempts to block the Strait to commercial shipping,” they said. “We express our readiness to contribute to appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage through the Strait.”

The statement came as Iran stepped up strikes across Gulf energy infrastructure, hitting refineries in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and liquefied natural gas facilities in Qatar, while also targeting shipping in the region.
The escalation sent oil prices sharply higher, with Brent crude rising above $119 a barrel at session highs and U.S. West Texas Intermediate briefly topping $100, as markets reacted to growing risks to Middle East supply and disruptions to flows through the Strait of Hormuz, which handles roughly a fifth of global oil trade.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Victor Davis Hanson says President Trump is embracing a new philosophy of warfare in the Iran conflict — one built on intelligence and technology, NOT boots on the ground.

No more door-to-door combat.

HANSON: “I think his philosophy is we are not going to put people in a Fallujah-like context where they are going door-to-door against jihadists that know the terrain and the environment.”

“We’re not going to do that. We’re going to play to our strengths.”

“Which is intelligence, technology, firepower, and we are going to do it in a new way, with enhanced drones and satellite reconnaissance so we know the individual names of individual commanders.”

“That’s new.”
