Trump and Iranian foreign minister say Strait of Hormuz is fully open

BEIRUT (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump and Iran’s foreign minister said Friday that the Strait of Hormuz is now fully open to commercial vessels, as a 10-day truce in Lebanon appeared to hold.

The truce offered a pause in fighting between Israel and the Hezbollah militant group and could clear one major obstacle to a deal between Iran and the United States and Israel to end weeks of devastating war. But it remained unclear whether whether the militant group would recognize a deal it did not play a role in negotiating and which will leave Israeli troops occupying a stretch of southern Lebanon.

In a social media post, Trump said Iran announced that the strait “is fully open and ready for full passage.”

Minutes earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posted on X that the passage for all commercial vessels through the strait “is declared completely open” in line with the ceasefire in Lebanon. He said it would stay open for the remaining period of the ceasefire.

It was not immediately clear what that meant for the U.S. blockade of the strait, but Trump said the blockade would “remain in full force” until Iran reaches a deal with the U.S. to end war.

Meanwhile in Beirut, barrages of gunshots rang out across the city as residents fired into the air just after midnight to celebrate the beginning of the truce, and displaced families began moving toward southern Lebanon and Beirut’s southern suburbs despite warnings by officials not to attempt to return to their homes until it became clear whether the ceasefire would hold.

A spokesperson for the U.N. peacekeepers in southern Lebanon said Friday that they have not observed any airstrikes since midnight, but accused the Israeli military of violating airspace and artillery shelling in southern Lebanon. The Israeli military did not immediately comment. According to the agreement shared by the State Department, Israel can act in self-defense against imminent attacks but cannot carry out offensive operations against southern Lebanon.

Trump heralded the deal a “historic day for Lebanon,” even as he expressed confidence that the war with Iran would soon end in a Las Vegas speech.

Iran Announces Strait of Hormuz Is Fully Open During Israel–Lebanon Ceasefire

Trump thanked Iran for the move but said the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian shipping would remain in force until Tehran agrees to a deal.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Araghchi has announced that, for the duration of the 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, Iranian forces will cease restricting shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, the critical oil transit waterway that Tehran has been blocking in retaliation for U.S.-Israeli attacks that has become a focal point in the war.

“In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage for all commercial vessels through Strait of Hormuz is declared completely open for the remaining period of ceasefire, on the coordinated route as already announced by Ports and Maritime Organisation of the Islamic Rep. of Iran,” Araghchi said in an April 17 post on social media.

Araghchi’s announcement, endorsed in a Truth Social post by U.S. President Donald Trump, comes on the heels of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, where Israeli forces have been battling the Iran-allied Hezbollah terrorist group after it launched attacks against Israel in response to the Iran war.

“Thank you!” Trump wrote in the post, adding that Iran’s announcement means that the Strait of Hormuz is “fully open and ready for full passage.”

In a follow-up message, Trump said that the U.S. naval blockade of Iran-linked vessels would remain in “full force” until the peace deal that Washington is negotiating with Tehran is “100% complete.”

It comes as Pakistan’s army chief met with Iranian officials in Tehran on Thursday as part of a mediation effort between the United States and Iran to extend their temporary truce and help bring about a lasting peace agreement, with much uncertainty remaining around whether the frantic diplomacy can lead to a deal.

Iran Navy Warns Hormuz Shut Again; Ships Report Gunfire

Merchant ‌vessels attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday received radio messages from Iran's navy telling them they were not allowed to pass, while two ships reported being hit by gunfire, shipping sources said.

Several commercial vessels tried ‌to transit the strait after receiving a notice to mariners ​a day earlier saying passage would be allowed but restricted to lanes Iran deemed safe.

On Saturday, at ⁠least two ships reported that Iranian boats fired shots, shipping and ​maritime security sources told Reuters.

The incidents were reported in waters between ⁠the Qeshm and Larak islands.

The vessels turned back without completing the crossing, the sources said.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency said it had received a ‌report of an incident 20 nautical miles northeast of Oman. ​

The captain of ‌a tanker said it had been approached by two Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps gunboats that fired ‌on the vessel.

The tanker and its crew were safe.

A container ship was also hit by gunfire, a maritime security source ⁠said.

Some vessels reported that Iran's ‌navy had been ⁠broadcasting a VHF message saying the Strait of Hormuz was closed again.

"Attention all ships, ⁠regarding ⁠the failure of the U.S. government to fulfill its commitment in the negotiation, Iran declares the ‌Strait of Hormuz completely closed again. No vessel of any type or nationality is allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz," the radio ‌message said.

Hundreds ​of ships and about ‌20,000 seafarers remain stranded in the Gulf, waiting to pass through the key waterway, which handles about 20% of global ​oil and liquefied natural gas flows.

Those boats should have been blasted to tiny pieces upon approaching those ships. I am sure there is a reason and it will be disclosed before long I am guessing.
