There is only one way that Michigan DOC can implement cuts of that magnitude:
Close prisons and kick the thugs loose.
Here in the Yoop, prisons employ a lot of people so that more unemployment for us. If the MSP cuts back, less cops and more thugs.
Everyone loses except the thugs.

I think the theory that SARS-Covid-19 would dissipate in the heat and humidity of summer has been put to bed.

So's the theory that dry heat will kill it. Arizona's apparently seen a lot of cases since the temperature's gone over 100.

In AZ we all go inside when the temps go over 100 degrees. Or to watreparks and tubing down rivers, both of which Gov. Ducey banned. So back inside, which is how people catch it from each other. The other dirty secrets to our so-called spike is overcounting positive cases, testing blitzes, influxes of Covid sick illegals in border areas, and influxes of Californians due to their state being completely shut down.

The UV out in the sun here will burn your unprotected skin in minutes. Do you really think a virus will survive that in addition to temps over 100 degrees in the shade, which is difficult to find?

Well, in Victoria (Aus), a State wide 6 week lockdown was imposed.

Day 14.

And now, a mask mandate is now in place.
Travel outside, wear a mask.
$200 fine if you don't observe this State health order.

Can leave the house for the following reasons:

- buying essential supplies
- for work, if you are unable to work from home
- to exercise
- to attend personal medical appointments, or for compassionate reasons.

Many here are used to this ... by now.

While I think this whole thing is ridiculous and we should just get back to our lives, the only good thing about these mask mandates is they are evidence that people generally seem to agree another shutdown of our economy is not the way to go.

I'd rather them be screaming about masks than destroying our economy.

According to Bret Weinstein (who should know something about these things) on Joe Rogan last week, there is very limited evidence of outdoor transmission of the virus and that UV is likely the reason.

So in a way, the lockdowns have in fact kept us all in the environment the virus is most likely to spread (Weinstein believes, like others, that it was an engineered bug that escaped the lab). Since he's an evolutionary biologist, however, he also is worried that, if we all go outside, it might adapt and spread that way too.

I had a surreal conversation with a Navy buddy of mine a few days back. It really rammed home how deep some people have bought into the fear porn surrounding Covid-19.

My buddy works for a Fortune 50 company in Risk Management and briefs the CEO on COVID 19 among other items.

He asked if I thought Gov Desantis in FL was a clown, I told him I didn't think so, that I thought he was trying to treat the situation with the appropriate level of action based on the situation for that Location/Situation.

Later he tried to say Gov Coumo did a good job so that was a pretty big red flag. I didn't push back on Coumo doing a good job as we had just got through a heated discussion that FL was a "dumpster fire" and pushing back on my denial of the pending doom. He tried to make his case by saying he talks to experts and doctors and sees the data.

I told him the FL dashboard does not show deaths ramping as fast as cases - so something has changed - He said "WAIT TWO WEEKS!"

When I mentioned that FL has been open since May and I've been hearing "wait 2 weeks" every day since we opened. He again said he looks at the data, it's his job, he talks to doctors...and he doesn't trust the FL data.

He didn't get my analogy about "if your only tool is a hammer - everything looks like a nail", I bluntly told him if you are an epidemiologist - ever bug is the next global catastrophe.

I asked him what data he trusts - he said John Hopkins - and I asked where they get their data from? He didn't answer.

By the way - John Hopkins data ties to Florida's numbers for cases & deaths. The time series of positive tests & deaths don't match exactly - but that may be a timing or classification issue - but they are close enough and have the same trend lines.

He started arguing that people aren't wearing masks - I told him - what makes you say that? I went out today and everyone was wearing masks inside and I went to 3 places ( I don't mean to make this a mask posting). He said that is just my anecdotal observation - which I countered with where is he getting his data that no one is wearing masks? No answer to that.

We ended that portion of our discussion by saying I'd check back in 2-3 weeks to confirm whether or not FL is a dumpster fire.

My buddy is generally a conservative - but he is now a rabid anti-Trumper and believes even if Biden is going senile - he'd be better than Trump. It was a disappointing discussion, especially when he said wearing a mask is an IQ test...

He lives outside of NYC and what happened there really left an indelible impression. He mentioned corpses being put into refrigerated trailers - but even he had to admit when I asked about the resources provided by the federal government for ICU beds being unused that it was really 2 hospitals in NYC that were overrun with cases - so it was a situation where the existing capacity wasn't used wisely.

Cognitive dissonance is a phrase I've really appreciated since first hearing it - and this discussion was full of it.

I steered the discussion to our kids and their struggles during Covid with school and activities - and the call at least ended on a positive note.

Well, we held out until every state around us had implemented one, but the Governor has now implemented our very own mask order, effective Monday. Masks must be worn in all public indoor spaces (exceptions for eating, drinking, and strenuous physical activity), as well as outdoors in areas where social distancing cannot be observed.

No guidance as to enforcement, but he says the "mask police" won't be out enforcing it, whatever that means. Technically violation is a class B misdemeanor...which is a higher level offense than basic OWI (DUI) in our state (class C misdemeanor). So we're essentially saying that you can be criminally charged simply for not wearing a mask during a time when we're not even taking actual criminals to jail for equal or even higher-level offenses.

I can't wait to start fielding all the calls from the local Karens angry because their neighbor walked to the mailbox without a mask on. Thankfully my vacation starts Monday, so I'll miss the first two and a half weeks of it. If I'm lucky Para's comet will come along and take us all out before I have to go back.

Every poll I have seen has mask use at 75-80% right now. If the number of cases has continued to rise quickly it is already apparent that masks are not the solution. PROPER use of masks may be a solution, but there does not seem to be much interest in educating people and those that appear on TV to chide everyone that mask wearing is good almost always have very poor mask protocols and habits (Biden and Pelosi in particular).
Someone posted from this site previously, and it provides great graphical representations of how this are playing out. Its easy to compare the first spike and the second, and the lag has already passed, mortality is way down.

It is a matter of perspective, if you are for masks, then those without have low IQ's, OTOH if you don't buy the mask argument, then the mask wearer is the low IQ person.

Tell him mask bigotry is a two way street, and to stop being a maskhole about it....

We've been going to baseball tournaments for the past 5 weeks here in GA. Each tournament has roughly 5 fields. Some a little more, some a little less.

So for any particular game, after the first game of the day, there are an average 10-20 teams in the park (~2-3 done playing and waiting around/leaving, 10 teams playing, ~2-3 teams showing up to play next).

I can count on one hand, maybe two, the number of people I see wearing masks. People social-distance to an extent but it's basically impossible at tournaments.

No panic. No shaming. No glaring. Just families out doing family stuff. And yelling at the umps! Smile

Bart: Alright, we'll settle this like men, with our fists.
Hedley Lamarr: Sorry, I just remembered . . . I am armed.

I agree. Our hospitalizations here were heading towards maxing out. Record number of deaths last week. Gov. Abbot hit the mask button, and the news states (local Fox news affiliate, who can you trust these days?) as well as the local medical experts they are putting on, that it's working and we are beginning to see a leveling. Jury is out completely, I don't trust anything. But say this works and our deaths and hospitalizations go down. WTF didn't they just do this from the get go, and never lock anything down? I'll believe it when I see it. But everyone required to mask up, and this POS virus goes away, then I'm calling incompetency at every level, federal, state, and local because a bunch of people lost their jobs, billions lost, and nothing but stress when day 1 you could have done this and not shut anything down sans the bars and in-person dining.

What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

^^^ Thank you.

You know, there really is no sense to any of it. At the very height of this virus, they said don't wear masks. Fauci said people should not be walking around with masks on; they actually do more harm than good he said. And now, as the mortality rate of this thing has nose dived, the mask mandates continue to spread throughout the country and at an ever increasing rate.

I should've known better, but I didn't think there was any chance that we would still be doing all of this into August. So depressing.
