Well that was fun. Went to the store to get salt, sugar, and pepper corns. Three different stores to get each item. Jeez.

Can you clarify the nature of this letter? Was this a heads up the TEA may delay schools opening for 4 to 6 weeks or was it a school will be closed until "x" date at least with a possibility of further closure. As of now there is nothing about statewide closures being mandated by TEA on their website and we have had no advice about closing from our district although we are just heading into our spring break week.

In the countries where this is worst, have they been unable to buy cereal or any of the above? No flowing water in italy?

Besides, I can live the rest of my life without hitting a grocery store. Can you not? If you can’t, yeah, I guess stock up on cereal, but after what, like 3 weeks, you’re screwed anyways.

Assuming stores are allowed to stay open, which isn't guaranteed, they are out of things now in most places and workers are starting to be sent home across the country. That means the supply depots might not be getting resupplied for long. Will it be a long term issue? Absolutely not, but that doesn't mean people who only have a few days worth of food won't regret their decision if this goes 4 weeks or more. To each their own, but I don't see the logic in people who panic and I don't see it in those who refuse to stock up on some essentials.

To me it is more of a mindset that we are responsible for taking care of our families and not supply chains or the government. I view this situation more as a reminder that people should have at least two weeks worth of food and water, so when issues like the algae toxin in water supplies, natural disasters, pandemics, or anything else happen we don't have to worry. I'm happy for you and your family if you are able to live off grid. I still would take precautions, but again, to each their own.

That you refer to cereal as “essentials” speaks more to your state than mine. I will bet you any sum you choose that they will not stop the food supply and close grocery stores. Pick a number. Again, where has this happened? The number of folks like yourself who can’t last more than a week or two would mean mass casualties in this country like nothing we’ve ever seen. We would lose like 80% of our population.

You buying extra food might make you feel better, and if it does, cool, but it’s unnecessary. Again, if you need groceries to feed you and yours, do whatever you need to. But I’d recommend learning how to feed your family without a grocery store before I’d tell others to buy extra cereal. If that’s your plan, you’re in deep shit anyways friend.

Arkansas schools are closing statewide. Mandatory starting Tuesday. Districts can choose to close tomorrow or not.

Our juvenile crime rate is going to skyrocket. And there are going to be a lot of hungry kids missing out on meals, since they rely on free school lunches.

This shit is getting out of hand. I bought THE LAST BAG OF KALE at my local Walmart earlier today. Yes, KALE is sold out now at my walmart. Roll Eyes

I was surprised that the beer and wine section wasn’t cleared out more than it was. I was even able to find some coconut and some rat poison flavored la croix water.... That was a pleasant surprise.

Jesus, can we lighten up a bit? It's just a little levity around what as far as I'm concerned is a reaction to the world's largest weather report.

Crazy right? I accompanied my wife to the grocery store yesterday just to see for myself and it was an eye opener. I got into prepping about 10 years ago. For the most part I have followed the LDS protocols. Sugar and salt being a part of the focus, but just a small part. I keep a spreadsheet of what I have stored over the years, and where I have stored it, and I think prepping is what has helped keep me calm during this. I don't have anxiety about the basic immediate needs. My anxiety lurks for my kids but it also lurks for my employees, for my friends who may not have taken the time to think about prepping for the future. Hopefully this will serve as a wake up call but my personal experiences have led me to be pessimistic about most people learning from their mistakes. I have been preaching about self reliance for years. You can lead a horse to water...

As far as I have read, there are no vaccine candidates currently in human trials, although there are some for which small, initial trials may begin in the next month or two. Some of the vaccine and treatment development summary pages list 30+ different groups working on vaccines.

There are some currently ongoing small, initial human trials for various possible therapeutic drugs (things that help you once you've already got the virus, rather than preventing you from getting it in the first place like a vaccine). I don't think any of the therapeutic drugs currently in trials are new drugs, all the ones I have read about are antiviral medications already approved or in trials for treatment of other diseases.

Antiviral drugs are kind of like antibiotics for viruses (although they work a bit differently). Most people are probably familiar with Tamiflu, which is an antiviral used to treat flu infections.

Unfortunately, it seems like antiviral medications are much more specific than antibiotics, and it isn't clear yet how effective any of those currently being tested will be, but the tone of the reporting seems to be cautiously optimistic and there are some early, uncertain positive indications.

It was an email from the New Braunfels ISD superintendent to all employees. It was NBISD specific. There were enough TEA references that I think the district didn't make the decision on their own. Just my opinion.

To be fair, most healthy people can go several weeks without eating anything without dying of starvation.

There would probably be a lot of deaths from idiots rioting and looting and stuff, though.

I’m not aware of any vaccine currently available, and will be surprised if there is one before at least four to six months from now, and probably longer. The testing pipeline just takes time, then once you get approval it takes a bit to scale up production.

Are you thinking of Remdesivir? If so, that is an experimental antiviral drug that shows some promise. Hoops to jump through to get it, but at least it is a possible treatment option.

True but I know how I feel when I go one day without food. Very easy to get angry and irrational. This is what scares me about mankind. What happens when it goes on for a week. It is very easy to let fear and anger take control, especially in mob rule.

Gilead Science has two phase 3 trials ongoing with Remdesivir and COVID.

We usually keep a good bit of staples on hand and do our major meat-dairy-staple replacement once every two weeks. Well as timing would have it, today was store day.

I was able to get most of what we wanted but our wally world has been hit pretty hard. There were employees wandering the aisles and marking down what was missing. In some aisles it would have been easier I think to write down what was there instead.

There were some things that I couldn't get and I stopped by Dollar General to see if they had stuff. Yep, no problems picking up items they didn't have a wally world.

The wife and I dared to mingle with the unwashed masses yesterday at the grocery store.
The shelves were bare in a few places but there was excellent stock on meat, produce, and other essentials. We even found cold medicine and bottled water in good supply. The folks I talked to there were plesent and everybody was saying how we need to pull together to get through this and remember we are all neighbors.
Really felt great to feel the American spirit live and well even amidst this silliness.
