NYPost.com: CIA official with top security clearance charged for leaking highly classified docs about Israel’s plans to strike Iran

By Emily Crane and Caitlin Doornbos
Published Nov. 13, 2024, 8:37 a.m. ET

A CIA official has been charged with leaking highly classified US documents about Israel’s potential plan to strike back against Iran over a missile attack.

Asif W. Rahman, who worked overseas for the agency and held a top secret security clearance, was arrested by the FBI in Cambodia on Tuesday over the leaks, the New York Times reported.

His arrest comes after the top secret materials started circulating online last month detailing Israel’s apparent intention to retaliate after Iran launched a barrage of missiles back on Oct. 1.

The files, which were prepared by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, in part detailed satellite imagery tied to the potential Israeli strike, as well as the various kinds of missiles on hand.

The top secret files were only meant to be seen by those with proper clearance in the US and the other members of the “Five Eyes” intelligence alliance — Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

At the time, the Middle East Spectator said it had received the documents through an anonymous source — and that it had no connection to the original leaker, nor could it verify the authenticity of the documents.

The FBI had revealed last month that it was probing the source of the leak, saying at the time it was “working closely with our partners in the Department of Defense and intelligence community.”

The indictment doesn’t provide exact details on the nature of the leak but says it occurred on or around Oct. 17.

The intelligence described in the documents was based on satellite imagery taken from Oct. 15-16.

Investigators believe the leak took place in Cambodia, according to court papers.

Rahman’s clearance with the CIA meant he had access to sensitive compartmentalized information, which is typical of employees who handle classified materials.

In the wake of his arrest, Mick Mulroy — the former deputy assistant secretary of defense for the Middle East — stressed that safeguarding such materials should be the “highest priority” for and intelligence agency or employee.

“It is very troubling to know that a CIA officer may of been involved in leaking this highly classified information,” Mulroy, who is also a non-Resident Senior Fellow at MEI, told The Post.

“Everyone is entitled to the presumption of innocence, but if true, this is a serious security breach and there is no excuse for it.”

“This protection is critical to protecting the sources and methods of our intelligence collection and covert operations rely,” he added.

More than one million people have access to top secret materials in the US, according to the latest available figures from 2017. An additional 1.6 million also have access to either information regarded as confidential or secret, data shows.

Once doled out, security clearances are reviewed constantly in a process officials describe as a “continuous vetting,” meant to ensure that any new threats a cleared employee presents are caught swiftly.

The process, which was overhauled by the Defense Department about two years ago, involves regularly reviewing a cleared individual’s background to ensure they continue to meet security clearance requirements.

Rahman, who is being brought to a federal court in Guam to face the charges, is charged with two counts of willful retention and transmission of national defense information.

After his initial court hearing, he is set to be transferred to stand trial in the Eastern District of Virgin

Once he is convicted and does his time, we need to extradite him to Israel.

Trump's first promise to Israel

President-elect Trump's associates have delivered an explicit promise that as soon as he enters the White House, he will remove all restrictions on the supply of military equipment and ammunition to Israel.

https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/399219

US President-elect Donald Trump's associates have promised Israel that on his first day in office, immediately after the inauguration ceremony on Capitol Hill, he will lift any delays and any embargo on shipments of weapons and military equipment to Israel, Channel 12 News reported on Thursday evening.

There is currently a de facto US embargo on one shipment and some equipment related to the war.

Diplomatic sources claimed that there is a connection between Trump’s promise and the apparent Israeli agreement to a ceasefire in Lebanon.

The sources stated that, if Israel agrees to a ceasefire for about two months, the Trump administration will enter the White House immediately afterwards and remove all obstacles in a way that will allow the IDF to fight more freely.

On Wednesday, The Washington Post reported that Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, who is Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's confidant, told US President-elect Donald Trump and his son-in-law Jared Kushner this week that Israel is rushing to advance a ceasefire deal in Lebanon.

According to the officials, the goal of the move is to deliver an early foreign policy win to the president-elect.

I have no qualms whatsoever with weapons going to Israel if they need them, but I'm curious why they can't build their own bombs.

They are a wealthy first world country with loads of really smart people. Surely they can supply themselves, no?

According to friend's who've been involved in treaty due diligence and diplomatic affairs, there a standing agreement (may also be written in various treaties) that Israel curtails its arms industry and relies on the US for a large amount of weaponry. From the US perspective, it prevents Israel from selling arms and munitions on the open market, particularly to states that the US would not sell to or, want in their hands. Should Israel be isolated from the West, it will ramp up its arms industry and sell to China if they deem it in their best interests.

For Israel, they continue to have special status and access for major tech like F-35 and Iron Dome along with major intel sharing, while not getting a lot of obstruction or, interference.

Makes sense. Both of you. Wink

I'd just like to think that should the shit hit the fan, they'd be able to start pumping out the necessary munitions.

Oh, please.

Israel is a country the size of Delaware, surrounded by people who want to wipe them off the face of the Earth. Try to imagine living like that.

The state of Israel is the only true ally of the United States in the Middle East. Do you think you can get past your antisemitism and try to comprehend the significance of this?

I don't "worship" Israel. I value it for its strategic partnership with my country. If you can't figure it out, that's your problem.

The performative republican outrage over Ukraine spending will bite our ass now that they are salivating over giving different foreigners everything they can.

You can bite your own ass. Ukraine is an Eastern European border conflict which has no bearing on the security of the United States, despite all the yammering of Ukraine supporters who claim Putin will have tanks rolling into Poland.

Israel is being attacked by Iran, an enemy of the United States, both directly, and indirectly via its proxies. Unlike Ukraine and its hyper-corrupt regime which has siphoned off billions upon billions of US taxpayer dollars to no positive effect, the aid provided by the United States to Israel is an investment in a strong strategic ally, in a region which may before too long blow up into a dangerous conflict.

As the saying goes, I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Israel can fight its own wars, just like Ukraine. North Carolina should be totally rebuilt before we hand out money to foreigners. Especially a country that never committed troops to the gwot.

Oh, so now it's not Ukraine/Israel and performative outrage; it's North Carolina/Israel and neglect within our borders.

Voshterkoff, the United States has engaged in non-stop foreign aid for more than a century. Don't behave as if you don't know this.

By all means, give all of our money away then. We only gave them $8.7 billion in September. Make it $20 billion in January. Increase debt, crash the dollar, worship foreigners. Trump will be the last republican president.

I'm not giving them anything, and I have little tolerance for obtuse behavior. I'll say it again for you, even though it shouldn't be necessary: the United States has engaged in non-stop foreign aid for more than a century. Behaving as if a devastating hurricane in North Carolina and Tennessee would alter this is silly. Presenting your argument in this manner means you aren't being serious; you're just saying things you know will never come to pass, in an effort to be right.

Ridiculous crap like this is a perfect example. You let me know when you intend to behave in a manner which demonstrates you're serious.

Saying things like Trump is the last Republican President, and telling me that you actually and truly expect that the United States is going to cease all foreign aid- you're just playing games and you are wasting my time.

Confirmed: Iranian Nuclear Facility Destroyed
U.S. and Israeli officials have confirmed Friday that Israel’s attack on Iran in October destroyed an active top-secret nuclear weapons research facility, damaging Iran’s nuclear weapons research program, putting pressure on Iran and Hezbollah.

Friday’s news coincided with a series of Israeli airstrikes in Beirut that destroyed at least one high-rise building in a Hezbollah-controlled area. You can see the building collapse here.

Lebanon’s prime minister has asked Iran to help broker a cease-fire in the ongoing Israel-Hezbollah war, as Israel has intensified its attacks on Hezbollah since September.

According to Lebanese media, U.S. Ambassador Lisa Johnson presented a cease-fire proposal to Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, who has been representing Hezbollah in the negotiations.
