Hey, here's a novel idea. Find out who screwed up and bill them for the cleanup and rebuild, instead of just automatically dumping it on the taxpayers. At least make the fucking effort.
He may have meant exactly what he said. It is also possible that he just wasn’t articulate enough to say something like, “It is my intention that the Federal Government will provide interim funding to expedite the repairs. Should the investigation reveal a responsible party or parties, the Federal Government will recover the funds expended from that party or parties.” Then again, maybe the average person listening to the speech wouldn’t have the attention span to track that idea even if he could communicate it.

Imagine priority 1 is to get the channel open so commerce can resume at the port, be interesting though if it takes say 6 months to get it open if shippers find better service and lower costs to move to alternative ports.

Things like this could shift a lot of cargo out of Baltimore forever.

I'd wager that any new bridge will be a modern design and take many years to complete, wide lanes and more of them. Taller to allow bigger ships to enter.

It probably will be some kind of monument to design like the Sunshine Skyway Bridge over Tampa Bay.

Initial estimates, given to our company, were that shipments would resume in roughly 4 weeks.

Once a bridge goes from being a means of transportation to also being a signature of the location, the time to design and build it increases drastically (doubles, triples, or more) due to the input required from all of the affected stakeholders who “demand” input. That’s a development in the last 20-30 years so hopefully the need for transportation will overcome the desire for the signature look this time.

Regarding dropping it, they’ll remove (likely blow and drop) a portion to reopen the channel fairly quickly to get the port back open to ship traffic and then remove and recycle the rest, including recovering any that is dropped for the channel over time. Almost all steel is produced from recycled material these days rather than ore with the price of steel being high enough to support that, likely even with need to pull it from the water.

I just want to know how the government reached the conclusion that this was simply an accident (No terrorism) first thing in the morning and they had not retrieved or analyzed the black box yet. Surely they would want to rule out malicious software and viruses first. Whatever happened to the days when something could be investigated before making conclusions.

Investigators recover data recorder from cargo ship that hit Baltimore bridge

https://www.france24.com/en/am...hit-baltimore-bridge

Investigators from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board recovered the data recorder after boarding the ship late on Tuesday, NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said. They will interview the ship's crew and other survivors, she said.

Collection of data from the ship will provide investigators with a timeline of what happened as soon as Wednesday, the NTSB's Homendy told reporters as she prepared to board the vessel.

The process will involve taking photos of the ship and the bridge, getting electronic logs and also interviewing first responders. The agency will also examine whether contaminated fuel played a role in the ship's power loss, she said.

Thanks to those who posted the videos from the "What's Going On In Shipping" channel. Lots of good info from some knowledgeable folks.

Curiously, as I was watching, I got a couple of text messages from some friends. The first one was a link to the Lara Logan piece; the second was a long-winded diatribe "confirming" that the crash was a sophisticated cyberattack; the last was a response also agreeing and adding that it was a "black swan event". Roll Eyes

I thought of responding with a link to one of the "What's Going On In Shipping" videos, but knowing these folks, they are not interested in being disabused of their delusions.

Absolutely. My son, to his credit yet intense frustration, has spent hours trying to enlighten our family members who actually believe the earth is flat. My son says that they have an answer - backed up by the internet! - for everything he throws at them.

As for myself, as I get older, I am more convinced of the great truth: "Never argue with idiots. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience." Razz

Presumably because they heard the pilot call "Mayday Mayday Mayday" and not Ala Akbar, and they aren't programed by the Interwebz to look for conspiracy everywhere.

From the video above -- 1:27:04 pilot commanded to drop the port anchor. This explains the rapid correction of heading just before impact. That thing seemed to turned on a dime, which seemed crazy for such a big ship.

I am not saying the crew is involved. How can they rule out the computer system being hacked until they examine it?

Iran's nuclear weapons program was shut down remotely with the Stuxnet virus over 10 years ago. I am sure there are countries who have the capability to inject malware into a foreign flagged ship that sails world wide.

All possibilities should be investigated before a government official declares anything right after a disaster, this is part of the reason skepticism abounds.

Baltimore Leader Says Conservatives "Should Be Afraid" For Calling Him The "DEI Mayor"

Authored by Paul Joseph Watson via Modernity.news,

Baltimore leader Brandon Scott appeared on Joy Reid’s MSNBC show to assert that white conservatives “should be afraid” of the consequences of calling him the ‘DEI Mayor’ and that his “purpose in life” was to make them uncomfortable.

Yes, really.

Professional race-bator Reid angrily asserted that when right-wingers make fun of DEI, they actually mean just “black people,” claiming, “It’s the reason they complained about Critical Race Theory, it’s not fashionable to be openly racist anymore in America.”

She then welcomed Scott, who dresses and acts like a Black Lives Matter activist, to address the horrifically “racist” fact that right-wingers don’t support DEI in light of the Baltimore bridge collapse.

The mayor complained about “young black men” being demonized and treated as the “boogeymen” by racist conservatives who think that “only straight, white wealthy men” should have power.

“We know what they want to say and they don’t have the courage to say the n-word,” he ludicrously added, before appearing to make some kind of veiled threat.

“The fact that I don’t believe in their untruthful and wrong ideology and I am very proud of my heritage and who I am and where I come from scares them, because me being at my position means that their way of thinking, their way of life of being comfortable while everyone else suffers is going to be at risk and they should be afraid because that’s my purpose in life,” said Scott.

And there you have it, in his own words.

Scott’s “purpose in life” is to make white people uncomfortable and afraid.

But remember, you’re the racist for making fun of him.

Reid also said the ship was “piloted by a very heroic crew from India” and that it was also racist to criticize them despite them failing to prevent the ship from crashing into and destroying the bridge.

As we document in the video below, the group that managed the Dali cargo ship and the Maryland Port Commission both appear to have prioritized ‘diversity’ over safety before the ‘accident’ that led to the collapse of the bridge.

The Truth About the Baltimore Bridge Collapse

https://www.zerohedge.com/poli...alling-him-dei-mayor

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

I agree they probably could pull off getting malware onto the ship. Probably that malware could disable the ship. But that'd be a pretty damn impressive feat to use malware to disable a ships energy systems and have it perfectly drift into a bridge pier. So I think we can forgive the official for not thinking of that one when he declared that it didn't appear to be terrorism after the ship went dark on camera, and then a mayday was called by the crew, and the captain dropped anchor, and tried to restart it, and it hit the bridge.
