Is there a commercial aviation expert who could tell me why the hell an airliner is flying over any area where hostilities, or potential hostilities, are known to be going on? Confused I know, it's the shortest route. Surely it isn't that far to go around it.

Seriously, no way I’m getting on that plane in a war zone. I’m leaving on a camel or whatever shit they use.

Hell, I was feeling a tiny bit squirrelly on a plane this Saturday day. It didn’t help that the TSA agent said, “we’re being really careful and thorough now, especially with what’s going on with Iran”...really lady!

How do you know there was anything going on? Most likely these missiles were fired from points close to the border with Iraq, not from Tehran itself. Tehran may have been on alert once THEY started firing but there was nothing going on that would stop a civilian airliner from taking off on a scheduled flight.

I am curious about the incident timeline.
Did the airline company know that hostilities were underway prior to the plane’s taking off?

Well, in this case, I believe the plane had just taken off from the Tehran airport.

My understanding was that the commercial flight took off several hours, like 3+ hours, after the ballistic missiles were launched, no?

The Ukrainian passenger plane that crashed shortly after taking off from Tehran’s international airport Wednesday was shot down by mistake by an Iranian anti-aircraft missile, Pentagon officials told Fox News.

Officials said U.S. intelligence increasingly points at the airliner being accidentally struck by a Russian-made missile, killing all 176 people on board the flight, just hours after Iran fired more than a dozen ballistic missiles targeting two military bases housing American and coalition troops.

The revelation comes as Ukrainian investigators reportedly are awaiting permission from Iranian authorities Thursday to examine the crash site and look for missile fragments. Iran has denied that a missile took down the Boeing 737 bound for Kiev, and its officials have blamed a technical malfunction for the aircraft’s demise.

"A strike by a missile, possibly a Tor missile system, is among the main (theories), as information has surfaced on the internet about elements of a missile being found near the site of the crash," Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of Ukraine's Security Council, told Ukrainian media. He did not elaborate on where he saw the information.

Insha Allah (God's will) or a stupid fuck up by the Iranian military? I'll go with the later. I think they just screwed the pooch with the nations that had passengers on board that aircraft.

Maybe Russian weapon, Russian crew? That would make things interesting as it was a Ukrainian plane.

Clearly this guy was on that list and was in a theater of operation.

Comments?

Not a debate, he was the known leader of an organization that had fomented and supplied arms against the US and Iraqi forces, not to mention has frequently (flagrantly and flippantly) traveled between Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. The only change was the US executive branch and military's move from (decades of) diplomatic appeasement and eggshell walking to, actually doing something about it. Because Iran was tied with the Shittes in Iraq, it was believed that any confrontation with the Iranians would upset the apple cart with the new Shitte dominated gov that the US installed in Iraq. Given the recent uprisings in Iraq, to include the burning on the Iranian consulate in Nov, I'd say the Iraqi people, still have some lingering hatred of the Iranians from their previous war and don't wan't to be another pawn in the Shitte mullahs games.

Since their military is more along the lines of the old Soviet model, it was their boss who told him to shoot. Its plausible an operator thought he'd 'take the initiative' but, that's a suppressed trait.

"Racism." The last, desperate cry of the Left.

Alexandria Occasional-Cortex just accused Rep. John Rutherford (R-Fla) of racism as he denounced "the squad" of being "Ayatollah sympathizers."

Story here.

You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless.

Although there was no independent estimate, aerial footage and Associated Press journalists suggested a turnout of at least 1 million.

I know it is juvenile, but every time I open this thread I hear "We Just killed Quaso Salami" in my head with the cantina music from Team America playing in the background. It is Parra's fault for his Dirka Dirka Dirka Jihad comment. I even gave the signal once.
