Do the next right thing |
Hang on a tic- They want to charge $20k to replace the engine, and then another $6k to inspect the head? Which engine are they thinking they need to inspect after swapping them?

It can happen, I've seen it on GM gas V-8s, guy puts a long bolt in a hole that should have got a short bolt and some sealer, bolt goes thru and hits the liner, cracks the block, distorts the liner. Lots of bolts on a Duramax assembly with varying lengths, special positions, sealers, etc. Wonder how much experience the part changer had. ________________________________________________________ You never know...

"What do you guys think?".... Well, since you asked... I think that if the dealership, or General Motors, or SOMEBODY doesn't step forward pretty soon with a solid plan to fix your truck -> at ZERO expense to you... and if they don't smile and use their best manners, and say "Yes, Sir" and "No, Sir"... Then I would find the most cutthroat lawyer I could find, and I would go after them. And I would employ the Trump model: I would explore and exhaust EVERY legal possibility UNTIL (1) My truck was fixed - PROPERLY; or (2) I had run out of legal options. And I would not let one day pass without reminding them that I was still there....FredT "...we have put together I think the most extensive & inclusive voter fraud organization in the history of American politics." - Joe Biden

And another thing: You mentioned in your OP that your Dad was 84 years old. I just suspect (hope that I'm wrong) that they might be trying to take advantage of a senior citizen who they MIGHT view as maybe slipping a little bit. And few things now make ma as angry as that. I am presently 72 and I notice people beginning to treat me as if I'm feeble and handicapped. You know the treatment: Talking extra loud when they address you, putting their hand on your shoulder and forcing eye contact when they DO talk to you, using excessively simple words.... etc, etc, etc. I never thought I would live to see the day when others treat me as the resident "Old Fart", but that day is upon me. And I can tell you this about your Dad's predicament: They are definitely trying to rip him off. Thirty thousand for an engine and eight thousand to look at the old one? No, Man - thy are trying to do highway robbery on you. And the mentally deficient one is NOT the one they think it is. Just sayin'. Be careful with these guys. They have already shown that they are crooks....FredT "...we have put together I think the most extensive & inclusive voter fraud organization in the history of American politics." - Joe Biden

Definitely lawyer time. I agree, taking advantage of your father. A tech messed up, and messed up bad. They are trying to flip or pivot to the blame game. 80k isn’t shit for a diesel motor. Man this is horrible to read. Fucking thieves. What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

I had a similar situation happen with my Audi A4. Dealership replaced the spark plugs and then the engine died on my wife’s drive to work. Had the vehicle towed back to the dealer and they pulled it apart and tried to charge me for a new engine. I went down there and took pictures and talked to the manager. Turns out, the electrode from the spark plug broke off and tore up the exhaust valve. Audi covered all the costs.

I think due to his age they want him to think his only option would be to trade it in with them for a new one. They would give him (literally) next to nothing for it and put it on their lot for 45 to 50. And probably move it quick. ETA: Found this on their web site. Same truck as dads only dad's is black on black, has 50k less miles and has factory wheels. As is 2015 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500HD $43,000

That was my question Also the diesel injection service, is that on the blown engine or the new one? Looks like that service estimate is very well padded

they have been down this road before -- you have not present you with a sky high quote and 'work with you' to negotiate it down to a 'reasonable' $15K cost to you if you honestly believe it's their fault I feel you may need to exhaust your efforts then get an attorney involved but even that may not help -------------------------------------------- Proverbs 27:17 - As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

Just because something is legal to do doesn't mean it is the smart thing to do. |
At this point I think a letter from a lawyer would get the dealers attention faster then arguing with them yourself. Integrity is doing the right thing, even when nobody is looking.

I am in the automotive business and work with but not for Nissan. I have a lot of dealers that have GM stores and can get you the district service reps and probably someone higher up on the service end. If you would like my assistance, email me at rpeed@me.com and leave me a phone number to call and I will be able to help. My granddaughter's Mini motor died and Mini has a real problem with the engine. I got involved and the bill went from 12K to 3500 in 24 hours. Bob “Our actions may be impeded... Not in any legal field, but, doesn't the estimate provided pretty much say the dealership screwed up in black and white? From page two of the thread - "After repairs, cylinder five failed". Isn't that pretty much an admission of fault? Cylinder 5 failed "after repairs" in their words, not yours? Seems like an easy win for lawyer type dudes, but I don't know.

That 'stealership' would have lost my business at... Replace EGR Valve $1055.89 That said... R&R Cylinder Head to Inspect Damage $6K Are they planning to perform that service before or after they R&R the 'Engine Assembly' for $20K? Not necessarily. Correlation does not mean causation. Consider the following example: I'm lifting a heavy load with 5 ropes. One of the ropes broke, so I put the load down. Load Lifter Repair Inc. came in and fixed the rope. So I did the lift again. Now another rope broke. Did load Lifter Repair Inc. do something to cause the next rope to break? Maybe. Or maybe not - maybe it would have broken anyway. I'm not saying this is or isn't the case here. From the OP and subsequent comments, I'm inclined to be on the OP's side. Just be careful of your logic. One of the frustrating things about mechanicing (so I'm told, I've never done it for a living) is that once you fix one problem, you own all the rest of the problems. Thus the metric system did not really catch on in the States, unless you count the increasing popularity of the nine-millimeter bullet. - Dave Barry "Never go through life saying 'I should have'..." - quote from the 9/11 Boatlift Story (thanks, sdy for posting it)

Damn I wish you were in GA. We'd go get an used engine and slap it in for around $3500. I'd do the swap for a Chic Fil A. He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should |
The fact they replaced the EGR valve first and must have run the engine and started the test drive without an obvious problem leads me to think it seemed fine at that point. Without any other direct knowledge, my gut feeling is they dropped something into the intake without knowing where it went. When they couldn't find the missing item, they reassembled the repair and started driving down the road before the part made it's way down the intake and into the combustion chamber. Seeing the engine as it's taken apart would provide most (maybe all) the answers you need. You still need to go there with a knowledgeable person to see anything you can before proceeding with other demands, lawyers, etc.. ___________________________ Avoid buying ChiCom/CCP products whenever possible.

And the truck they advertised as "AS IS"? I have never seen a dealership do that and then tell you it has to be fixed before you can buy it. And then go on to say they might not know all the things wrong with it? WTF? End of Earth: 2 Miles Upper Peninsula: 4 Miles

Cockatoo - if all else fails perhaps the owner would be willing to have the truck delivered to Georgia to take you up on your offer.
