If you're willing to travel a bit to get one, I think you have far better options than the Tundra you noted in your initial post.

2014 Tundra Platinum 4x4

2017 Tundra 1794 4x4

2017 Tundra TSS Offroad Edition

As opposed to??? Walk into a dealership or meet with a private party and it will eventually become nothing more than a bidding contest.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

In any case, expand your search to the Limited trim. You'll get more creature comforts and can add skid plates and suspension. I was looking at the new TRD Pro's and it's as much a cosmetic package as an offroad vehicle. Blacked out with better suspension and skids but I'd lose heated seats something else but I forgot what.

The gas mileage sucks and the factory stereo is garbage but I haven't heard a factory system I'd keep. I've heard some that weren't bad but I wouldn't call them good including Bose (cough) and Levinson.

Tundra parts are no more expensive than Ford or Chevy but you don't need much because they're so reliable. Prices are close and resale/trade in value blows anything else out of the water.

You might even look at a newer SR5 and building it up. Katzkin leather is far better than factory and easy enough to install, I did my 2007 in a day. Dynamat everything while the seats are out and go from there.

Oh to know what the "Minimum Bid" price is on that one. Nice that it comes with a clean title too.

55k? Yikes! When adjusted for inflation, every car I've ever owned and driven comes in at $36k.

If I ever had to make a payment, would that mean that I own the truck, or does the truck own me?

You can get a Tundra with built in pop up camper which is $100,000.00. Rolling waste of money right there.

You’re a GM guy so you do have skin in this fight. GM’s quality isn’t even in the same solar system as Toyota. They can’t even make an ignition switch correctly without murdering people. Give me a break. The rusty Toyota frames were because the frame supplier did not coat the frames to Toyota’s specifications. Toyota even paid owners well over fair market value for the trucks with the rusty frames that couldn’t be repaired. Keep that great GM feeling: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wk109ycowBY

I could post vid after vid about GM’s stuff. They made me and millions of Americans proud Toyota owners.

So aside of Power Surge nailing it here...

Getting the difference... Yeah, Toyota trucks (at least in AZ) sell for up to 90% of new price a few years after they were sold, with a fair bit of miles. The Tacoma resale value is insane.

Drum brakes. They actually have chosen to not upgrade to four wheel disc. This has been explained time and again. The emphasis is for off roading. Get in some sand or mud, you don’t have crap between the discs and pads. If you have crawl control (which actually works amazing at getting a truck buried to its frame in sand, out of the sand) it needs brakes that aren’t full of sand or other substrate.
Being that these trucks are not primarily towing vehicles, the additional cooling offered by discs is not necessary.

in the words of Para:

Forgive me for stating the following so bluntly, but if you pay 40, 50,000 or more for a truck, you're getting screwed in the ass. Stop and think about how much money that is. But, people will pay these obscene Goddamned prices.
All that money going for a vulnerable toy that people will take from you in a heartbeat, or that some asshole in another car will help you total? Yeah, instead, I invested that money in desireable collectibles which will be here long after your overpriced sled is part of the counter top at some Burger King. These items of mine accrue in value each year, unlike your overpriced tin can.

First off, it has been stated that Black isn’t looking at dropping 40 or 50 on a truck. 29 was the top of the budget.

Para, I totally agree. Spending that much on a vehicle is insane. I have done more times than I care to speak of. I could have paid for my house if my wife and I didn’t buy cars like we did when I made wicked good money.

A vulnerable toy... I’ll argue that point with you. I go off roading at least once a week. I plan trips just for going off road. I have driven many miles to take my truck off the beaten path, where many others cannot go. That said, I’m proof that it’s more driver and skill than vehicle. I have a 2019 Tacoma SR. (That’s the base model). I lifted it 2 inches, added armor, a hell of a good horn and PA system, and some headlights as the stock halogens are so dim they should be illegal.

It’s no more a toy than collecting firearms, or any other “desirable collectibles”. What this truck does, is it gets me out into beautiful areas where no other stupid humans are, and let’s me relax. It’s my kind of enjoyment.

The limited has different differential, different suspension, different many things that aren’t related to off road. The limited is a street truck. No point in looking at those, as thee are way too many features missing.

For a Toyota, the break point is far, far before that.

Just get a 2021 F-150. I'd go with a solid color and not polka dots myself though.

If the Pro is want you want. That’s a good price

The 5.7 is pretty much a bullet proof motor. It Can be a bit thirsty when you get into it but strong

I traded (at the dealer) my 13 Platinum 4x4 with 149,000 miles for a 17 Tacoma Pro. Had 1 accident for hit and run at night while it was parked. They gave me 25,000 trade in. So 29k for a Pro with less miles an clean sheet, I say go for it

The 17 Tacoma Pro brought 25,000 trade with 123,000 miles

Now Driving a 2020 T4R Pro

Ended up getting a one owner local purchase/local trade (2 hours from me) 2014 Toyota Tundra Limited. No reported collisions and my inspection would agree.
Same mileage as my 2016 Expedition I traded in. I wanted to be closer to 50k miles but got a great deal on a super clean truck.
They gave me $5,800 less than I paid for the Expedition 3.5 years ago. Under 2k depreciation a year maybe a record for a Ford outside of the special mustangs and diesels.
That much on trade I only am out a little cash out of pocket. I have sold some of my parts from the Expedition and when I sell them all I’ll be just a couple thousand over even. So in the end it worked out pretty well.
Does need new tires but that helped to bring the cost down. I had not really planned on getting a Limited and they have 20” wheels.
I have 33” tires for an 18” wheel I pulled off the Expedition and folks say they will fit the Tundra without a leveling kit.
So I am going to price 20” tires compared to 18” take off wheels and may just use the tires I have. I found a set of 18” wheels off a 200 Series Land Cruiser for a nice price that will likely be half the cost of the 20” tires.
I ordered a Gator tonneau cover and their version of WeatherTech floor liners.

The 2 hour ride home was great it was about an hour on 2 lane farm roads and the rest 70 mph highway. The truck did great was nice a smooth. It was a beautiful day so the tunes pumping through the JBL sound system and all 5 windows down was great.
Having that back glass roll down is just the bees knees. It has a moonroof but I am not a huge Fan of those and only use them at night.

The throaty exhaust note of the V8 is so pleasant compared to the exhaust sound of the V6.
