I cannot say this enough Repeat after me “You will not take our children into the path of a hurricane” And if she tries call the police You think that’s extreme? People die from these storms. No exaggeration. (Unlikely, probably. What odds do you need until you’re comfortable putting your kids in the risk?) If you want to be more passive than that just call and cancel everything yourself without asking Everyone Everyone In the area With experience with hurricane Is telling you not to go I don’t know what else you want us to say at this point There is no true tip to making this better. The tip is “evacuate”. And people that stay do so because they are stupid or because they have the experience and equipment to mitigate the risk. But even then it’s just that....mitigation. They are still in danger. As people have said The airlines will absolutely fly tomorrow. There will even be Uber tomorrow. You will have maybe a day or two or relative normalcy. But then you get to experience the true wrath of Mother Nature It’s the old joke...facts are changed to be relevant PaSig and his family are going to Disneyland ahead of a hurricane. Don’t worry, says the in-laws, the good Lord will protect us. The national weather service tells you not to go. Don’t worry, says the in-laws, the good lord will protect us The governor and state tell you not to go. Don’t worry, says the in-laws,the good lord will protect us Kevbo and all of sigforum tell you not to go. Don’t worry, says the in-laws, the good lord will protect us And so they went And they died when a category 5 hurricane made landfall And when they got to the pearly gates the in-laws said “lord lord I thought you would protect us” And the good Lord said “For my son’s sake, I sent the national weather service, Kevbo and all of sigforum, and the entire government of the state of Florida to tell you not to go!”This message has been edited. I mean no offense, but cognitive dissonance didn't work out to well for the inhabitants of Pompeii. When the volcano went pyroclastic, and everyone stayed there because of the political goings on, everyone there died. For the love of everything that is holy and true, I'm telling you right now, do not go. H&K-Guy

Seriously it’s about being responsible for those who can’t, your kids. We as adults can do all the stupid shit we want and it’s on us. Your kids expect you/need you to keep them safe and make good decisions erring on the side of caution. Are you all likely to die horrible deaths? Probably not but you are not going to have a joyous trip and the risk of death or injury sure is ramped up. You do what you want but I wouldn’t put my kid, hell I wouldn’t put anybody’s kids in the path of a hurricane voluntarily. Take Care, Shoot Safe, Chris

At the very least let’s us know you and yours are safe. Here is hoping it’s a lot of rain and light park attendance for you. Stay safe and I truly hope whatever you end up doing you have an enjoyable time with your family. Take Care, Shoot Safe, Chris

They are now saying that it could possibly be as devastating as Andrew. Why is there still a discussion going on at this point? Have your wife and in-laws read every headline and article in the upper left hand corner of The Drudge Report. After that call and cancel your airline and hotel tickets and go next year. If the storm continues to slow it will give the media an opportunity to ramp up fears to a point where this storm will be described as likely to end all life in the continental US. ![]() The storm track and wind velocity are still changing and will continue to change, while the 'weather experts' continue to sling virtually meaningless predictions for the next few days until the storm finally reaches Florida and shows us where it will go. Given its current trending, there's still a chance the storm may track even further south and either clip south Florida or the keys. This, nobody knows where it's going to finally land, or if it will be a 1, 3 or 4 at landfall exactly when and what will happen. However I will say they are not fun to be in and avoiding them altogether is best, if not, just be prepped and ready, and being on property makes it better for everyone. At least there you have a good chance at having power, food, water and things to do.. I think piling on him and his family is a bit much, even though I agree that a delay is wise, it is still up to them, if they come or not.

A no win situation. He will likely never hear the end of it no matter what happens. Today, everyone is interested in the "experience" more than material things. This could be a new vacation idea. Travel and vacation in hurricanes. Take video and post on U-Tube. You can be setting your family up to be the next Reality TV stars. See - a silver lining. Best of luck. The JIF and H20 filters are a sane choice. When the kids go back to school and write what they did on summer vacation ---

I see the hyperbole is running rampant even here. It won't be as devestating as Andrew. Poor construction methods were a major factor in Andrew. New houses wiped off their foundations because nothing was tied together. Since then, roofs are strapped to walls which are strapped to the foundations. Staples are no longer an acceptable method of attaching sheathing. Someone said most of Florida will be without power. Maybe 10% will be without power during the storm. People die in these storms! This is true. 10 people in Florida died from the direct effects of Irma. 22 million people survived. Guess how many people in Orlando have died from the direct effects of hurricanes in the past? Zero. Orlando has only been hit 2 times in the past. Both Charley and Frances in 2004. Worst case, it's going to be windy and rain for a few days. Everything will be closed for a few days. You might lose power. Travel back to PA will be delayed. The Disney parks may close early, open late, or be shut down for a day or two. Disney has only not opened 6 time in it's history for a total of 7 days. Five times for hurricanes and once for 9/11.

Dude, stop confusing matters with facts. You're ruining a perfectly good panic. ![]() ![]() ![]() I still do not recommend traveling to a hurricane zone. Ever. The risk is seldom worth the reward, in my limited experience. Chicken Little has to be right some of the time, this could be the one. Why risk your family? But that is something the OP is going to have to decide for himself. H&K-Guy

I live just north of Orlando, maybe couple hundred yards north of the city line. We were without power for more than a week after the last hurricane came whistling by (was that last year, or the year before?). As far as travel back to Pennsylvania, after every major storm, local news has a day or three of segments interviewing people who are stuck at Orlando International Airport. Airline operations are so complex that it can take several days after a major interruption to get back on schedule, and then they are trying to mover people who are scheduled on the day(s) that service is resumed, as well as trying to find empty seats to catch up with those whose earlier flights were cancelled. It's not as if they have a bunch of spare airplanes and crews in a warehouse, ready to bring them out as soon as the weather clears. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

I think he is outvoted by his wife 1-1. I’ve lost such votes. Be that as it may, I’m suggesting it’s much more likely he has a putrid vacation than his family perishes because of it. I suppose he has another 16 hours or so to monitor the situation. The current NHC cone suggests slow movement til landfall, then acceleration almost straight north. It may get blown out of the state by a front somewhat quickly, and not cross to the Gulf. That might be the best Florida can hope for. I’d still pass on it.

Yeah, sorry. I figured PASig could make up his own mind as well.
That would be Irma two years ago. Technically speaking, Irma's sustained winds were only about 60mph when it went over Orlando and not a hurricane. That was the one time Disney did not open for two days instead of just one.

It might help to think about this from a different perspective. Let me ask you (or your wife/in-laws) this: What kind of vacation did you envision? Whatever that is, let's call that 100% satisfaction. For 100% satisfaction, you are going to pay 100 cost units (whatever your total expenditures you've made and will make for this vacation). Now, let me ask a different question: given the current weather projections, is 100% satisfaction still possible? Let's say it's not sunny while you're there and your really wanted to go to the beach one day. That's a subtraction off of the original 100% satisfaction. Now, let's say that really nice dinner you wanted at the end of the vacation won't happen because the restaurant is closed for hurricane repairs. More subtraction. Now, the parks you wanted to visit are closed and you only get to go for half the days you original envisioned. More subtraction. Then the hotel loses power for a day and you can't lock the door from the outside because it's electronically controlled so you can't go out as a family because someone has to stay in the room to make sure your stuff doesn't get stolen. More subtraction. If the electricity goes out, the AC goes out too. More subtraction. Are you willing to spend 90% of the original cost to get 50% satisfaction? The hurricane doesn't care if you spent a year planning, and it's not going to be stared down by your wife. At some point you have to ask yourself if you can still get what you want out of the deal. How much do you want to pay for a bad time? Do you want to pay as much for a bad experience as you would for your ideal experience?

Shit don't mean shit |
I'm typing this response from a chair in Myrtle Beach, SC. Why am in in Myrtle Beach? I was supposed to be in the FL keys. It's my 10th wedding anniversary. Back on Tusday I said there was no way in hell I was going to the Keys with a hurricane headed SOMEPLACE in FL. Didn't matter if it hit Jacksonville, Vero or Miami. I was not going to be anywhere near the shit show. Even if it missed the Keys, we were sure to get rain most of the trip. Screw. That. We fly back on Sunday. Go somewhere else. We changed everything early enough we still had options. You might be SOL by now. We were supposed to fly Delta denver to atlanta, atlanta to Miami. We called Delta on Wed and said where can we fly to from Atlanta. They said we can get you to Charleston, SC. Done deal. You gotta take emotions out of the picture and think rationally about it.

I haven't read back all that far, but is the OP's wife still insisting on going? You almost certainly won't die. You are likely to have a shitty time. Admittedly, it could more or less miss Disney totally. But there could be no Disney, and hiding out in the hotel. Depending on how close the storm comes, it could be in a hotel with no power. No AC. It is Florida, in the summer. Think about that, you Yankees who aren't used to very hot and humid. Restaurants could be closed. Snack food only, if that can be found. You won't starve because the Red Cross will show up on the second or third day, but that means dining on bottled water and whatever crap they have. You could easily get stuck there for three or four days longer than you expected. Or even a week. I've been in the direct line of four hurricanes in my life. One wasn't too bad for me personally, but that was mostly just luck, as the power was out for just a day while other neighbors had no power for weeks. The others more or less sucked for a week or better. Harvey forced me to sell my flooded house and move, so that was more than suck. Don't go. If you do, make the most of Saturday night and Sunday. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

You will just WISH you were dead. Red cross takes a while. First step is clearing the roads. We had helicopter drops of MREs for awhile. Yummmm No toilets or running water. Heat indexes over 100. Cell phones do not work. Satellite phones work, but who has those. The good part, Category 3 winds kill all the bugs. Of course after all the rain they are back with a vengence after a week. The smells of rotten food are overwhelming.
