Do these Indians have a written language? Would they have a clue what a Bible is? What would he say to them? Let’s pray together?

I shouldn’t judge him for what he did but I try to be pragmatic. Sounds like he wasn’t.

Maybe the Indian government should just bomb the crap out of these 50 tribesman and build resorts! There’s always that. J/K.

He was an idiot, now he's a dead idiot.

I'm curious about the tribe, though. I wonder what their language is, what their life expectancy is, how they've managed to survive for so long, if they were affected by the world wars, etc.

Not curious enough to find out in person, though. Big Grin

Domitian was a pretty bad Emperor, all things considered, and was fairly naughty in the sight of the Lord. But even John didn't say, "the Lord hath directed me to kill Domitian," and have at him with a gladius. That would have been gruesomely fatal, rather pointless, and not at all what God actually intended for John to do. And I'm reasonably sure, in fact certain, that neither Father nor Son directed the stalwart in question to go preach the - incomprehensible to them - gospel to a benighted people who would absolutely kill him on sight - to what should have been his sure knowledge. To God all things are possible, but He does not require purposeless sacrifice from His followers. Even Daniel had a reason for being in the lions' den. The proper assessment for these sadly lethal shenanigans is "pride," and it frequently is, in fact, terminal. But I'm also sure the Almighty has received him in good humor and explained it to him. The sadness is for his family remaining, who will miss him in what could have no doubt been a useful and fulfilled life.

He lived it by going there.

So he died, so what.
If he died in service to the Lord, he secured his spot in the afterlife doing the Lord's work.

I don't think most of us including me have the ability to put in all on the line for Christ.

He did.

Well said LBJ I was thinking the same. The ship Uttermost Witness has been going to remote islands near Samoa for sometime now. I know Patty and James well. They know the risks of connecting with remote island tribes.

The sad thing isn’t the ignorant atheists/agnostics that swarm to these threads. It is the proclaimed Christians who are oblivious to the idea that faith might be more than their “faith”. He doesn’t need any explanation of his “ignorance” from God. He was welcomed as a faithful servant.

It's possible this is the case except for the fact that Christianity doesn't work that way. It's often depicted as such in movies and t.v. but entertainment writers often write about things they don't know about. Someone on missions knows how Christianity works.

I am in agreement however that a group that has made it so obvious they don't want to be contacted shouldn't be.

Yup. Trying to be bull headed and barging in to “convert” people that want nothing to do with your god, and are probably happy with their belief structure is foolhardy in the extreme. I have no problem calling him a dumbass.

A thing can be funny and sad at the same time. I wonder what the talk around tribal campfire was like that evening?

As for the missionary, clearly he was worried about the possible outcomes but felt it was what God wanted him to do. Just like the guy who I used in my signature line.

Perhaps apropos of the question, some may recall the temptation of Christ, where Satan invited Him to cast Himself off a cliff, and surely God would uphold Him, if he had "faith." There is a reason that Christ declined his sporting proposal, to illustrate a very important point. If the point is lost to the reader, I'm afraid I'm a much poorer teacher and so I'll defer to the Master.

How is 50 people enough to perpetuate a civilization?

Ever think that some people just don’t want to be “saved”, and are pretty much content living life the way they want? Especially when there’s a big “DO NOT DISTURB” sign on the door.

Oh, but THIS GUY, he’s going to be THE ONE, right? He’s the one that’s going to force his ideology on a group of people that have sent a pretty strong message while pointing to that “DO NOT DISTURB” sign.

Ignorance, no.
Arrogance, probably.

Nope. This faithful servant choose to go to a far off land, looking for spiritual romance thinking he could live and achieve like the Catholic friars during the Age of Discovery, but instead got smacked with reality. It's the 21st Century, there are very few if any, 'primitive people' left on this planet, that are open to conversion, particularly from a person that speaks and looks quite a bit different than what they're used to. This guy ignored all signs and historical information, believing his faith would carry him to glory; his intuition lead him wrong. How about doing some good work in this country's urban centers? There's a lot of trailer parks and rural communities that could use a good man of faith to bring the light? Maybe go off to Muslim-lands and help those Christians that are persecuted by the prevailing regional religion and cultures?
As a fellow Christian, this guy's efforts were wasted and I would suspect, a bit mental.

It seems very arrogant to me that someone thinks they are entitled to spread their beliefs to another group, especially in this case, obviously without their consent.

Murder is suddenly ok if the indigenous do it to missionaries? If a gang banger kills someone who stepped on the wrong street, we put them in jail. That's what the Indian government ought to do to these guys.
