The Obama administration’s massive shakedown of Big Banks over the mortgage crisis included unprecedented back-door funding for dozens of Democratic activist groups who were not even victims of the crisis.

At least three liberal nonprofit organizations the Justice Department approved to receive funds from multibillion-dollar mortgage settlements were instrumental in killing the ObamaCare repeal bill and are now lobbying against GOP tax reform, as well as efforts to rein in illegal immigration.

An estimated $640 million has been diverted into what critics say is an improper, if not unconstitutional, “slush fund” fed from government settlements with JPMorgan Chase and Co., Citigroup Inc. and Bank of America Corp., according to congressional sources.

The payola is potentially earmarked for third-party interest groups approved by the Justice Department and HUD without requiring any proof of how the funds will be spent. Many of the recipients so far are radical leftist organizations who solicited the settlement cash from the administration even though they were not parties to the lawsuits, records show.

“During the Obama administration, groups committed to ‘revolutionary social change’ sent proposals and met with high-level HUD and Justice Department officials to try to get their pieces of the settlement pie,” Cause of Action Institute vice president Julie Smith told The Post.

Some of the chosen beneficiaries are now actively militating against the Trump administration and its policies, including:

THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF LA RAZA
NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE
NATIONAL COMMUNITY REINVESTMENT COALITION

It’s not clear how much money, in all, has been diverted from settlement funds to these and other left-wing organizations. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has ordered a full audit of the funds while discontinuing the practice of funneling Justice Department settlements to third-party groups.

Still, The Post has learned that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau continues to force financial institutions it prosecutes to donate to third-party community organizers . More, penalties in such cases are deposited into the Bureau’s now-$170 million-plus Civil Penalty Fund, which has, in turn, channeled almost $30 million to “consumer advocacy” groups.

CFPB director Richard Cordray is an Obama holdover , whose special five-year term doesn’t expire until 2018.

The White House released President Donald Trump’s eighth slate of judicial nominees Thursday, announcing the nominations of a popular Texas Supreme Court justice and a seasoned religious liberty litigator for the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The president’s picks for the 5th Circuit include Texas Supreme Court Justice Don Willett, U.S. District Judge James Ho, U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt, and Kyle Duncan, former general counsel of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty.

Willett in particular is popular with law students and practitioners active in social media. The justice maintains a Twitter account that traffics in law puns, pictures of his family, and relentlessly pro-America imagery, prompting the Texas State Legislature to style Willett the state’s Tweeter Laureate in 2015. Legal ethicists cite his use of the medium as the standard par excellence for social media use by judges.

A devotee of Chick-fil-A, the justice keeps a “satellite office” at a location near his Austin home, to achieve “what Oliver Wendell Holmes called ‘the secret joy of isolated thought.'”

Twitter aside, Willett first attracted widespread attention in 2015 for a concurrence that he wrote in the case Patel v. Texas Department of Licensing, in which he urged courts to apply great scrutiny to government regulation of economic activity. The opinion was a significant contribution to the ongoing debate in conservative legal circles about the proper role of a court in a free society.

Duncan, one of the nation’s top religious liberty litigators, will likely attract significant criticism from Democrats. Before entering private practice, he led one of the nation’s top public interest law firms, representing a variety of high profile clients before the U.S. Supreme Court. He was lead counsel in Hobby Lobby v. Burwell, in which a 5-4 Court concluded that the Affordable Care Act’s contraception mandate does not apply against closely-held private corporate entities.

In private practice he represented the Gloucester County School Board in litigation concerning its refusal to allow a transgender student to use the bathroom corresponding to his gender identity. The Supreme Court initially agreed to hear the case, but dismissed it after the Trump administration withdrew Obama-era guidance advising that public schools should provide such accommodations to trans students.

Other nominees announced Thursday include Gregory Maggs for the U.S. Court Of Appeals for the Armed Forces, Ryan Holte for the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, Barry Ashe for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, Daniel Domenico for the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, and Howard Nielson for the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah.

Conservative court-watchers praised the president’s picks.

“Top to bottom, this is an extraordinary list of judicial nominees,” said Carrie Severino, chief counsel of the Judicial Crisis Network, a conservative advocacy group. “President Trump continues to hit grand slams in an area that unites and excites Republicans.”

Leonard Leo, the president’s judicial selection guru, singled out Willett and Duncan for praise in a statement supporting the nominees.

“President Trump’s latest group of judicial nominees is strong. Texas Justice Don Willett and Louisiana attorney and professor Kyle Duncan, in particular, embody President Trump’s commitment to picking judges who have a record of excellence and a commitment to a judicial role that is impartial rather than committed to a particular personal or legal agenda.”

“They are held in very high regard by scholars and practicing lawyers across the country, and I am confident they will serve with distinction,” he added.

DOJ files suit against company for allegedly not hiring Americans

The Department of Justice announced Thursday it has filed a lawsuit against a Colorado corporation for allegedly discriminating against U.S. workers.

The complaint alleges that in 2016, Crop Production discriminated against at least three United States citizens by refusing to employ them as seasonal technicians in El Campo, Texas, because Crop Production preferred to hire temporary foreign workers under the H-2A visa program.

“In the spirit of President Trump’s Executive Order on Buy American and Hire American, the Department of Justice will not tolerate employers who discriminate against U.S. workers because of a desire to hire temporary foreign visa holders,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement. “… Where there is a job available, U.S. workers should have a chance at it before we bring in workers from abroad.”

This is the first complaint filed stemming from the “Protecting U.S. Workers Initiative,” which was launched on March 1.

A Civil Rights Division official told Fox News that since the initiative’s launch, the division has opened 29 investigations of “potential discrimination against U.S. workers based on a hiring preference for foreign visa workers.”

DOJ officials also told Fox News the department has reached at least one settlement with a company discriminating against U.S. workers in favor of foreign visa workers, and distributed over $100,000.

ICE arrests nearly 450 illegal immigrants in sanctuary city raids

As part of a massive illegal immigration sweep, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced Thursday that officials this week arrested nearly 500 illegal immigrants living in sanctuary cities across the country.

The raid, referred to as “Operation ‘Safe City’” in a news release, spanned four days in cities through the U.S., and ended Wednesday.

Illegal immigrants with criminal charges or known gang-affiliations were targeted, the release said, noting that recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program were not.

In Philadelphia, 107 illegal immigrants were arrested, while 101 were arrested in Los Angeles and 45 people were arrested in New York.

The release noted that 18 of the 498 people arrested were gang members or have gang affiliations.

A Mexican illegal immigrant in Los Angeles who was arrested is a member of the Colonia Chiques gang, a group dubbed one of the “largest and deadliest gangs” in southern California’s Ventura County by the FBI.

That immigrant, who was found with a handgun, allegedly rammed a number of law enforcement vehicles in an attempt to escape from authorities.

Sanctuary cities -- or cities that don’t cooperate with federal immigration policy -- have become a heated topic as the Trump administration has pushed for a stronger crackdown on illegal immigration.

Even though ICE has said arrests of illegal immigrants are up 43 percent since this time last year, deportation numbers are down, according to The Washington Post.

The Cambridge school system says the opinions in the editorial do not represent the district and released a statement, saying “the employee was not authorized to accept or reject donated books on behalf of the school or school district.”

For those not aware, doing business in other countries is very difficult for a US company. Canada for example, demands that all work be done by Canadians, unless you can prove to a very high level of certainty, that no Canadian has the skills to do that job.
