Bravado is exactly what is needed right now by the Ukrainians. Anything short of running away and becoming "refugees" is brave.

The thing that surprises me the most about this is that after months of hand-wringing and analysis from the chattering classes in the media and politics, they were actually somewhat right. Putin really was serious about invading Ukraine. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

As far as the military action goes, with their air and land superiority it's not surprising that the Russians are making significant progress towards establishing a foothold in Ukraine quickly, disrupting the incumbent gov't and occupying large parts of the country. But I'm less optimistic about their long-term chances of success, any more than we were in Iraq. What's his endgame? I do not see even a Russian puppet state as a likely long-term possibility.

In Ukraine it’s likely false bravado… And that’s fine whatever you need. Not my business.

Here in US, (media) supporting that kind of bravado is foolhardy at best if you’re sober, lucid and paying attention to what is truly most important to Americans here at home. It’s not Ukraine or even the Baltics.

Putin did not idly suggest nuclear war because he’s in agreeable mood. When will we start listening to him? He put 70,000 troops on the border of Ukraine 12 months ago and everybody looked the other way.

Last I checked this morning we’re still buying lots of Russian oil every day at hugely inflated prices.

I assume it means we would be moving 830K BPD through the pipeline rather than having to buy 595K BPD from Russia. In other words, we are going from a net exporter to a net consumer thanks to Brandon.

I *think* it shows 595K imported per day, vs the amount of 830K produced per day, by having the XL.

Implying that we would be 235K in the black on surplus of produced and wipe out the debt of purchasing 595K, while benefiting from the sales in GDP, and adding to reserves.

I 'believe' that shitty (and confusing) graphic is indicating that Keystone XL was good for 830K Barrels/Day, and that as of 11/2021 we're importing 595K Barrels/Day from Russia...Well at least that's my hope and what is the most logical conclusion anyway.

I can imagine that we'd be importing an 'additional' 230K Barrels/Day from Russia if Keystone XL was operational, because that would make NO sense at all.

ETA - 'sigmonkey' said it better, but NO question, it's a confusing graphic. We shouldn't have to think this hard about such a thing... Wink

Time for the people of the Ukraine to engage in asymmetrical warfare, same as the people of Afghanistan did against the Russians.

I agree. As long as you have the will to fight, there are ways to do so. Especially on home turf.

The Keystone XL pipeline was supposed to carry 830,000 barrels of oil per day from Alberta, Canada to Texas gulf coast oil refineries.

The graphic is basically using the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a way of attacking the Democrats who blocked the Keystone XL pipeline by pointing out that the Keystone XL pipeline by itself was planned to bring more oil into the US than we import from Russia.

Importing oil from Canada is still importing oil.

Biden didn't turn the Keystone XL pipeline off. It was stalled, unfinished (they actually built less than a tenth of it), never having been operational, and Biden just put the final nail in the coffin of making sure it doesn't get finished.

^^^Regardless, don't forget that in January 2021 the US was Energy Independent, a net exporter and the world's largest producer of Oil and Natural Gas!

In my state the price of Gas has increased 55% since then...And the price of Natural Gas is up 88%! Mad

Let's Go Brandon!

21:09 local time in Kyiv, the Live Video Feed of Maidan Square went black.

A few minutes ago the other live feed from Kyiv went black.

I see comments saying Power Station in Kyiv was bombed, no current live video feeds.

Although this is said to be a live feed.

Ukraine and A-stan are universes apart in terms of culture and economic standing. Personally, I think the best thing Ukraine can do is negotiate a reasonable settlement of this situation before they get a large number of people killed. Russia has the military might to take Ukraine, one way or the other. I heard at noon that the president of Ukraine had contacted Putin to discuss a settlement to all of this, and Russia was open to it. Good. The sooner this comes to an end the better for everyone.

The "settlement" I saw talked about was Putin calling for Ukraine to surrender, disarm their military, and promise never to join NATO.

So pretty much, "baby, you know I love you, I promise not to hit you again, I just get so angry."
