Costco’s return policy and a question on ethics — should I return the grill? *POLL* Login/Join

About 200 votes and 30% say “yes” / 70% say “no”. Interesting data.

Skins, you said on page 3: “Cope, do you pay your membership fees every year? Do you pay it on time? Do you excessively return items or try and game the system? If your answers are yes, yes, no, no. Then return it and don't think twice about it. That is the who reason you pay them to shop at their stores.”

Absolutely my answer would be yes, yes, no, no. I’ve been a Costco member for over 15 year and regularly shop there and pay my dues. I rarely return items. The last time I did it was a bulk pack of black olives (canned) that were rock hard like a year ago. I hate returning stuff.

This grill would be a major pain in the ass to return. It weighs like 700 pounds. I’d need help (some neighbor friends, likely) to get it around to the front of me house (this would be a major undertaking that would include going up a gravel path on a pretty step incline) and would need to rent a little U-Haul trailer with a ramp to transport it.

Knowing this was a big barrier for me wanting to return it the first year or two of ownership (one of those you snooze you lose kinda things).

But now I’m thinking it may be worth it, after all. We’ll see. I’ll probably forget about it next week and life will go on.

At a minimum, I could get in contact with KitchenAid regarding warranty repair. I’m not sure how long the warranty is.

Okay, bad attitude, but if they didn't start off helpful, I might share with the KitchenAid folks that you are trying to decide whether to go through them to try to get it working or just take it back to Costco for a full refund. No need to explicitly spell out that if you do that Costco will shove it down their throat, so it would likely be in their best interest to help you get the grill working. They should be able to read between the lines. Oh, and make sure to be very nice and give them your name and get their name and ask for the spelling. It is amazing how helpful customer service folks can be when you are nice to them, and failing that when they know you have their name.

It is idiots like the people you mention that ruin it for the rest of us and will force Costco to change their policy. They have already changed the policy in the past due to idiots returning electronics after a new version comes out. You used to be able to return electronics the same way but now they have strict limits on electronic returns.

2.5 years is WAY too long to return an item because you're not satisfied. Even considering it is ridiculous and you're just looking for justification to do something you know isn't right.

I think the fact that you posed the question shows that, deep down, you feel it's the wrong thing to do. You've already answered it. Otherwise, your conscience wouldn't be prompting you to look for reassurance.

What gets my goat is that there are six pages of discussion and there still seems to be some doubt in your mind about what "the right thing to do is". Holy crap! If you successfully "take it back" and they issue you a refund then I hope their next step is to yank your membership on the spot and escort you to your vehicle.

You are offered a benefit by being a member of this organization. You pay to be a member. Use the benefits to the fullest extent.
