Costco’s return policy and a question on ethics — should I return the grill? *POLL* Login/Join

I voted no.

Knew a young lady some years ago that bought a paint sprayer from one of the big box stores, painted her house, then returned it a few weeks later.

This kind of stuff ain't in my wheelhouse. What she did isn't right and waiting two plus years isn't right either.

It probably comes down to intentions. You know full well whether or not you are trying to pull a fraudulent return.

I would expect a $2,500.00 grill to function properly for more than two years. I would not return it for minor cosmetic problems, but if it does not function properly, and reasonable maintenance attempts do not fix the problem, I would not hesitate to return it to Costco.

You have had it too long. Too late for a return.

But look into new burner units.

After 90 days it was yours.

I would have bought a Weber before a Kitchen Aid.

The Weber has a 10 year warranty and just works right.

If the burner doesn't ignite then it is defective. What is the warranty period? Bet it is longer than 2.5 years.

If you just didn't like it then I'd say no but since it is technically defective, I say return it. I see no difference in returning it to the manufacturer or to Costco. Let Costco handle the manufacturer. That's what they are there for and that is the risk a retailer takes by selling a manufacturer's product (at a marked up price, mind you.)

Ps... a $2500 grill? Good lord...

2 years? No way.

I could see after 2 months, but this isn't right to try to return it after 2 years.

Not Costco's problem now after 2.5 years, but on the other hand you should be talking to the manufacturer for problems you are having with their product.

I'm with others. $2,500 grill. I think you had your chance to return it earlier.

I'd just look up some replacement knobs or whatever is bothering you and possibly replace some burners.

If it is within the bounds of Costco's policy you should be able to take advantage of it and not have it ding your conscience. You paid your membership, you paid for the product. $2300 is a lot of money. If Costco say it's okay, then it's technically okay. That considered, why would you not have acted on this sooner. You lived with an inferior product for 2.5 years which makes little sense to me.

There is a lot to consider here.

If you have only returned three non re-salable items in 14 years. that's one thing.

If you return 1 non re-saleable item , every three months , you are in a whole nuther board game.

I say call the manufacturer, First !
talk to a customer service rep, NOT the receptionist !
see what they have to say about your circumstances,

perhaps they have addressed these issue's with 12 other customers,
and they know first hand, how to make you happy. your ordeal may already be done with.

If they ( the maker) refuse to competently meet your expectations, and your are willing to risk your relationship with Costco.

Haul it in to the store , do not call!.
with documentation about your exchange with the maker.

ask them , ( do not demand ! )
if they would be willing to meet you half way.
$1,250.00 , to return it.
on a store credit.

you really really should have known in 4-6 months about the cooking issues,

I have yet to vote

I voted "No" based on the lenth of time only.

Not being familiar with your grilling habits or knowing what kind of care, or abuse, was given the grill or, the manufacturer's warranty, somewhat limits my ability to make any other decision.

I had the same grill that was already at a luxury Air BnB house I managed. It was built well with a strong/thick S/S body and such. But as a grill was a total POS. It had 5 burners and needed all 5 on to cook, took 10-15 minutes to get sort of hot, but NEVER got REALLY hot. The welds on the 3/8" tubes that made up the cooking grates broke and we gave it away. Honestly, I would've returned it A LOT sooner for lack of performance.

If it's not working correctly, I would call the manufacturer or Costco in regards to the burner and knobs getting replaced......but personally feel you've had it to long for me to justify returning the grill for the performance issues. You might get lucky and they might not have the parts and might exchange it at Costco anyways.

If you bought it with your Citibank Costco card, call them as they double the warranty again to 4 years on electronics I believe.

He is not talking about returning it for not liking it. He's talking about warranty repair. On electronics Costco doubles the manufacturers 1 year warranty to 2 years, then the Citibank Costco visa doubles it again to 4 I believe.

I spend so much money at Costco, it is ridiculous. If you only used it 25 times, I would ask the Costco agent what they would suggest. If they cheerfully say they will take it back, then do it. Costco has very strong relationships with their suppliers. The manufacturer will settle up. They do NOT want to lose their relationship with Costco. A nice BBQ should last a long time. I have a Weber gas grill that is 10 years old. All I do is change a few parts every few years. 2500 is a crapload to spend on a BBQ. It should last 10 years and more.

Why not simply contact store management and possibly manufacturer, explain the situation, and ask what can be done?
