Jim,

You seem to have a quote for every occasion. Do you have a list of those? It’s one of many things I’ve appreciated reading from you over the years.

Jim,

I was listening to the song Wildflowers by Tom Petty this morning. I've never thought of it as a song about death before, but today I did and I was thinking of you.

Godspeed sir, on this final journey.

JAllen,

Although we have never met, I have enjoyed your posts through the years.

I want to say I admire the attitude and grace you have, despite the hand you have been dealt.

If there is anything at all, I can do for you and your loved ones, please do not hesitate to ask.

I collect quotes, a “hobby” I started a long time ago. There must be many thousands. It’s a result of being an avid reader. I have several books of quotes, and there are quite a few quote websites. I don’t really have a list per se.

Many are very familiar, but one advantage of an erratic memory is that some pop up as new and are just as rewarding as if they were.

I’ve held off commenting further about this thread as I really do not know what to say. When Para and I corresponded on this issue recently, we amused ourselves recalling Tom Sawyer attending his own funeral and being quite overcome with grief. It turns out that hasn’t been quite the case here but reading this thread is definitely a strange sensation, a mix of astonishment, gratitude, appreciation, remembrance of the good old days, comradery, some adventure, and more besides. Rewarding but strange!

One of my favorite quotes is Will Durant’s line, “Nothing is frequently a good thing to do and always a clever thing to say.” Maybe that’s a good thing here, being semi speechless.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that fact.
