Lead slingin' Parrot Head |
My Dad was assigned to one of the several Nike missile batteries that rang several major U.S. cities as a defensive measure against possible Soviet bomber attack during the Cold War. He used to joke that he fought the Battle of Long Island. He shared this story with me not long before he passed: It was a Friday and his unit had been granted weekend passes and they were all excited to get off base. Their new lieutenant was young and a by the book type and gave them orders to report for rifle range practice before their leave began, with the shooting range literally on the beach and a sand dune for a berm behind their targets. Most of the unit had been issued M1 Carbines, however my Dad had been issued one of the two M2 Carbines. The M1 is semi-auto, and the M2 is selectable to full auto, but the Lieutenant ordered that all rounds were to be fired semi-auto only. While my Dad was firing on his assigned target a seagull landed on it. Dad was serious about his duty and wasn't a trouble maker...but the devil got into him at that moment and he couldn't resist the temptation...so he selected full-auto and dumped a mag on the bird. He wasn't even sure if he hit the bird, but that didn't seem to matter to the lieutenant who was not amused...and he revoked the unit's weekend passes. A very costly mag dump. Please include me in this generous karma. My father and both uncles served with volunteer enlistments in the U.S. Army. However, I have a lifelong friend whose son has recently signed the papers and will be reporting for Basic in a couple months as a commissioned Army Lieutenant, and I'm thinking this might be a good first carbine for him. Thank you veterans and thank you Q.

E4 Crew Chief on a Medivac uh-1H Huey 1979-1982 Please count me in “Our actions may be impeded... But there can be no impeding our intentions or our dispositions. Because we can accommodate and adapt. The mind adapts and converts to its own purposes the obstacle to our acting. The impeding to action advances action. I swear I had something for this |
I’d love to join in if I can. Both Grandfathers were Navy. Maternal GF served in the Pacific in WWII. Paternal GF served on the USS Bordelon DDG-881 in the 50’s. My Aunt was an Army nurse who retired as either a Major or Colonel. I doubt it counts but my job is keeping police officers safe on dispatch.

Wow! Best Veterans Giveaway yet! Thank you! "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
