Hmmm Super Cruise on GM products

As much as we'd like to think we are all "good drivers", we'll never match the reaction time of the sensors and computers available now and in the future. Yes, the self drivers occasionally do something goofy, but not with nearly the frequency of humans. My Yukon has Super Cruise which is a step down from Tesla in terms of autonomy, but it is still pretty impressive. When I was looking at it last year, GM was claiming that zero collisions had been recorded in something like 750,000,000 miles when SC was engaged.

I have a friend who put 30k on his Tesla using FSD in a few months. He said there were about 5 times he had to intervene - and this is driving in Houston too. I will consider buying one with FSD in 7-10 years. As I get older, less patient, with declining eyesight and slower response I think it will be worthwhile. But who knows what will happen in that time, maybe others will match the technology and I can buy something else.

I'm not ready to trust the technology yet. Maybe in 5-10 years, but not yet. "If Gun Control worked, Chicago would look like Mayberry, not Thunderdome" - Cam Edwards

Are we really willing to give up the freedom inherent in driving yourself in favor of letting some system do it? I'm fine with being driven. The traffic in my area precludes any fun being had while driving anyway.

I've got an 87 Chevy and a 96 Jeep, I won't be full self driving until I can't do it anymore. "The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people." "Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy." "I did," said Ford, "it is." "So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?" "It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want." "You mean they actually vote for the lizards." "Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course." "But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?" "Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

To reduce insurance costs, lots of people will do it. Especially younger unmarried drivers if they can afford the tech.

Speaking for me only, that's all I need to hear. I will stay with self-driving for as long as I can. .

I would guess that for an individual driving in Houston there were at least that many close calls in 30,000 miles of driving. If I lived in the boonies then it would not matter. 28 years of driving in the Houston area and I have had enough.

There are times I wish I didn’t have to drive. And long trips would be nice, it’s one of the big inhibitors for long driving trips. But I don’t trust the SW. And I think it might get worse - no confidence in younger programmers. I wonder what the margins (premiums and payouts per car) between a Tesla and a $40k sedan. Lemonade Insurance...Never heard of them, so I looked them up. Found these little tidbits on their website: Do all drivers need the Lemonade app on their phone? Depending on the state, they do. We use smart technology to price policies fairly, speed up claims, provide on-site emergency services, and measure driving impact—like CO₂ emissions so we can plant trees in your name. Is it okay to disable location services for the Lemonade app? In some states, not using the app can affect your price. Keep location on for the best rate, access to emergency services, a smoother claims experience, and more. Sooo, Nope...NO Thanks! Not a chance in hell I'd agree to using/installing a Tracking App from my insurer on my cell phone. They can keep their 'discounts'! ____________________________________________________________ If Some is Good, and More is Better.....then Too Much, is Just Enough !! That's what I was thinking. Lemonade? Not exactly driving the insurance business. First off you have to convince everyone to put monitoring ability into their vehicles. And yes that is more than is currently there. Letting your insurance company literally have access to every time you drive. Fuck that. Lots of people don't even like backup cameras. lol.

Apologies, title edited. Now Lemonade the company here isn't the question, they do require quite a bit of information from you effectively at all times so they can aggregate the data and charge you less. But their data is in line with what to expect from everyone else, Self-driving cars are significantly less likely to cause an accident than a human piloted car, that means the risk for the insurance company is reduced which means fewer payouts. As more and more cars improve their self driving we'll start to see "self driving only" policies which will for the majority of people be just fine for their use. This leaves expensive policies for driver piloted cars as they'll have to account for you driving into a self driving car, beyond the other flaws of human drivers. _____________________________________________ Proverbs 3:31 "Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways."

How does all this automated driving do in really crappy weather, like sleet, icy roads, tremendous downpours, etc.? _________________________________________________________________________ “A man’s treatment of a dog is no indication of the man’s nature, but his treatment of a cat is.
