After a strike FSD won’t be available until you pull over, put the car in park.
Three strikes in a week, and you lose FSD for a week. Basically a $25 penalty and you have to drive.
Darn, I struggle with this concept. I prefer driving myself, don’t even like cruise control as it somewhat disconnects me from the process. Same is true of autopilot in airplanes. In both cases, that’s just my personal choice.

Philosophically, I don’t like the idea of nanny devices interfering, but on the other hand when I think about how many times I have either passed or been passed by someone who is driving like an idiot an thought, “Yup, the moron is texting as I can plainly see they were.” If FSD could get those jackasses to put down their phones and pay attention, that could be a beautiful thing, above and beyond any other benefits of FSD.

ETA: I lived and worked in London for a year and a half, getting to work via either Britrail or the Tube and a little bit of walking. If there was space, I often sat at either architected or wrote code on paper. It was great to be able to use that commute time to get work done. Driving is not the place for that.

What exactly do you think FSD is?

So having a car that can do this I'll say that I find it to be an interesting party trick at this phase of my life. For me I dont trust it and I dont think anyone else should either, not 100 percent atleast. I also have too much fun driving the car.

That said, I like the option. Its nice to eat food or take off my coat or any of the other small things, while continuing the trip. I was driving once and had a hornet crawl up my chest and wasn't far from wrecking the car due to the suprise and then subsequent evasive maneuvers trying to get it off my neck and out the window. Would have been sweet to hit a button and the fix the issue while not veering about.

I know people that are freaked out about driving to a new place and I think FSD would be the answer for them.

Most importantly I think of my grandmother who became a mailbox assassin in her later years who lost her car and therefore her freedom when her ability to safely drive went away. She had a teenage grandson with a learners permit to get her to her hair appointment and to the store but she couldnt do it and it only now dawns on me what a blow that must have been. I dont know that she would have accepted it, she didnt even embrace email, but the capability being there might have been something. I now look at my parents who called me at work to drive them to the hospital because my dad who is the only one who drives was having an issue. It freaks me out that they wouldnt call an ambulance and had nobody else who picked up the phone and when I was done berating them about it a car that could take them to the hospital definately came up. You are going to tell me those things exist (cab, random stranger etc) and I'll say sure but if they dont use them it doesnt matter.

On my current trip I'll say I wished I could have drove my car to the airport and told it to go home once we arrived. Instead my buddy drove us and that was great but just having my car do it would have been easier. We will get back to the states next month and when we arrive I will rent a car. It would be nice as well if it could just come pick us up and I could road trip in my car vs a rental camry. 1st world problems for sure but these are just some of the things I think of when the autonomous car comes up.

Now that thats out of the way, I'm against the level 5 plan or whatever it is that states all cars shall be autonomous without the ability to control them. Nope. Strong Nope. I'm fine with the option but against going at gunpoint into the "future" with someone else ulitmately being able to decide when where and why I go somewhere.

I think most of us who are older/have older family members have to look at this.

I will be getting FSD on my next Tesla - waiting for the LWB model Y.

And, I think I’m getting one for my mother.

She’s just fine, mentally, but driving seems to be a bit much/the drivers in Myrtle are truly terrible. (Transplants. As soon as you hit Pawleys, it becomes clear the population has shifted.)

Prefontaine sorry for missing the comment. Been traveling/still traveling.

My point is, a horse can reproduce itself and just keep going.

If you’re willing to travel by horse, as long as you have water and forage, you don’t need anything else.

The motorcycle needs an industrial base to support it.

Similarly, a sailor needs some knowledge and the right plants. Polynesians sailed the Pacific with knowledge and some very basis tools.

A clipper ship wasn’t THAT much more complicated, and could still be made in one area, with the right timber and access to basically metals.

The steamship took far more of an industrial base.

Lots of inventions which can seem simple, took so long (like the pencil) because it requires a substantial increase in industrial base to support.

The demographic collapse is seriously threatening that global industrial base.

India and Africa will NOT replace China and Japan and Europe and cultural Americans, from a productivity perspective.

If they could, they already would have. (Africa may have some real upside, same as Central Asia, but India will be as failed as it always has been.)

Disclaimer:I am in the process of making some investments in Central Asia. I think it’s my focus for the next few years, at least.

Ever read Bradbury's short story "The Pedestrian" about someone walking out at night and being accosted by an AI-equivalent police car?

Is auto insurance cheaper for FSD cars?

“Yes, auto insurance can be cheaper when using Full Self-Driving (FSD), as select providers offer targeted discounts for miles driven autonomously. However, overall savings depend heavily on the specific insurance carrier, your driving habits, and whether you use specialized programs.

Insurance Options and Discounts
* Tesla Insurance: Offers a safety-score-based policy in select states that provides a discount (capped up to 10% on certain coverages) for drivers who actively use FSD (Supervised) for a large portion of their monthly miles.
*
* Lemonade Autonomous Car Insurance: Provides an approximate 50% discount specifically on the per-mile, usage-based rate for miles driven while Tesla's FSD is actively engaged. This option is currently rolling out in select states like Arizona, Oregon, and Indiana.
*

Key Considerations
* Partial Discounts: Discounts typically apply only to specific coverages or the per-mile component of a policy rather than your entire fixed base premium.
*
* Overall Cost Comparison: While FSD-specific per-mile rates are cheaper with partnering insurers, baseline quotes can vary widely, and some drivers find traditional or alternative insurers cheaper depending on their location and overall risk profile.”

"And in her ears the little Seashells, the thimble radios tamped tight, and an electronic ocean of sound, of music and talk and music and talk coming in, coming in on the shore of her unsleeping mind. The room was indeed empty. Every night the waves came in and bore her off on their great tides of sound, floating her, wide-eyed, toward morning. There had been no night in the last two years that Mildred had not swum that sea, had not gladly gone down in it for the third time.”
― Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451

Ahead of his time. He missed a bit on the "parlor walls" as we carry those in our pockets.

I refer you to page 1 of this very thread...Lemonade Insurance is was started it back in January!

quote:
Lemonade Insurance...Never heard of them, so I looked them up.

Found these little tidbits on their website:

Do all drivers need the Lemonade app on their phone?

Depending on the state, they do. We use smart technology to price policies fairly, speed up claims, provide on-site emergency services, and measure driving impact—like CO₂ emissions so we can plant trees in your name.

Is it okay to disable location services for the Lemonade app?

In some states, not using the app can affect your price. Keep location on for the best rate, access to emergency services, a smoother claims experience, and more.

Sooo, Nope...NO Thanks! Not a chance in hell I'd agree to using/installing a Tracking App from my insurer on my cell phone. They can keep their 'discounts'!

^^ Well, according to Tesla...

"When enabled, your vehicle will drive you almost anywhere with your active supervision, requiring minimal intervention."

"Currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous."
