Refrigerator Died...any brands I should avoid? Login/Join

So my Kenmore refrigerator gave up the ghost and I'm looking for a replacement. Are there any brands that I should avoid? Any brands that you would recommend?

After a cursory search on a big box website, LG and Samsung look pretty sharp. But they don't seem like traditional refrigerator brands to me.

Just looking for some opinions and guidance if you have it to offer.

Where's Appliance Brad when you need him??? Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Thanks!
JP

My LG is over 10 years old. Double door with freezer on bottom with water/ice in the door. The only repair I've made was replacing the water on/off solenoid on the unit. That was needed as the flow of water slowed. Easy job with a $19 part from Amazon.

All of my kitchen appliances are LG and have been trouble free - - so far.

From previous threads, it sounds like Samsung should be avoided.

Frigidaire is an avoid brand for me.
Ours gave out without warning, the dishwasher is just sufficient.

We've been happy with the Kitchen Aid side-by-side that we brought with us from our prior house & replaced the Frigidaire in a pinch, until we can get something that matches the kitchen (stainless) better.

No offense, but I have to disagree.

We bought an LG and I would never buy one again.

I've lost count, but we had at least 5 service calls on the ice maker in the first two years. The ice maker has worked since then, but it is poorly designed and ice cubes get caught behind the ice maker. Every time you open the freezer, a couple of ice cubes fall out on the floor.

Sounds like you'll end up with an insulated box with block ice service every day.

It sounds like ice makers all break, but it's hard to find a fridge without one. Other than that, it may be worth it to call some local repair shops to see which models they fix a lot and which they consider reliable.

Avoid Frigidaire with twist tray ice makers in the upper fridge part. Ours has gone out too many times to even both fixing now. Very common problem too.

Bought a new Samsung. Lowes delivered it and set it up. Suggested I fill the freezer and refer with food from old refer as it would help it to cool down faster. Went to bed. Got up in the morning. Opened the door and the inside of the refer was a little lower than room temp. Compressor never turned on but the indicator panel said all is well, freezer at 0 and refer at 37. Had it replaced with the same model as that was my only option at the time. Sold house. Don't know if it's still running. That was two years ago.

We went with Whirlpool again, this time side by side with the door water and ice dispenser about two and a half years ago. Our previous Whirlpool top mount freezer had the icemaker quit at about twelve years old. So far so good.

Replaced a 10 yo Samsung with an LG in May. Tomorrow the LG gets swapped on RA after 5 months for a Whirlpool.

I would avoid Samsung. We had a lot of problems with our Samsung french door refrigerator. It finally died at around the 3 year mark, and I didn't bother calling the repair guy again. We ended up going back to an older style Maytag top-freezer model without the ice maker. The Samsung was way bigger than we needed anyway since we have a separate chest freezer.

Customer service from Samsung is horrible for appliances.

I have Samsung washer and dryer set and will NOT be buying the brand again. Waiting for them to quit

Several appliance folks advised me to avoid Samsung. Repair guy too. I purchased extended warrenty on Whirlpool unit on advice from someone in the business. Sure enough, the icemaker crashes periodically. According to several repair guys, icemakers on most units will fail. My Whirlpool has been good other than the ice maker. My previous model, a FrididaRe now in the garage, had several icemaker failures. Repair guy says icemaker repairs the “meat” of his business.

Manuf’s have ice makers for promotional purposes to help sales. They are intended to last only past the first year warrenty. I guess they expect you to buy their ectended warranty. If you don’t screw you!

We've had really bad luck with our LG ice makers (door and freezer). They just seem to randomly stop working. We got the LG recommendation from five friends that have had nothing but good luck with theirs so I can't say they are crap.

Dont get one with an in-door ice maker. That has been the bane of all of my refrigerators, GE and Whirlpool.

My current one is a freezer on the bottom, like the room it has
