While my instinct is to have zero sympathy for someone like this, I will give him some credit.

Most conspiracy theory nuts fallback on the idea of “prove me wrong“.

This guy actually made the exceptionally rare attempt to “prove he was right“.

The Amboy launch was a bizarre attempt to prove the Earth is flat.

So how, exactly, was a flight to 5,000 feet supposed to accomplish this? Maybe we'll never know.

The self-taught rocket engineer gained notoriety for his belief that the Earth is flat.

One would think if he was smart enough to understand rocket physics, he would be smart enough to understand orbital mechanics.

Was he with the chute when it fell off, or was that a lost chute and thus he rode it down?

A balloon could have gotten him to 5000 feet. The risk of impacting the Earth at terminal velocity would be substantially lessened as well.

Um, no. Just no. Some things require an education and all the pain that goes along with getting an education.

That was a "drogue" chute attached to the rocket designed to slow it during descent. As it tore away on launch, there was no way for the vehicle to decelerate, so the rocket augured in at 350mph with him in it.

Death comes to us all. Sometimes it comes when riding a homemade rocket to support your belief that the Earth is flat. Roll Eyes

Hell, a basic economy window seat on any budget airline will get you that high and then some by a multiple of 7.

Yeah, tons of failure in this entire plan. I'm sure he's taken flights on commercial airliners before.

The term "Bored Second graders built this on a rainy Saturday out of trash left in the barn" comes to mind.

I know others mentioned much easier and better ways to get up high.

So this leads me to believe he was either really stupid, legit crazy, or just doing this silly shit for a reality show paycheck.

Probably a mix of all three.

Immediately after launch, everyone knew this idea would fall flat.

The thing is, for the price of a simple airline ticket one could prove that theory wrong. Heck, when I took the Travel Air up to 17,500 to check out a newly purchased portable oxygen system, the curvature of the earth was plain to see from there. I do not believe the sort of altitudes he was trying to obtain are enough to see the curvature.

Oh well, at least he stuck the landing...
